  1. We might be able to grow things like algae in bits of the ocean that are relatively infertile and use them to make ethanol.
  2. Are you sure? I thought it was modern poetry.
  3. "Money is sin" LOL Even Jesus isn't quoted as being that harsh about it. Anyway Kaplunk, you say "- I'll just say, "Wait and see." Fine by me, but I somehow doubt that's all you will say.
  4. It must be true; David Icke believes in it. http://www.davidicke.com/ (also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Icke )
  5. This thread is composed of two halves, the useful bits and Kaplunk's postings. BTW, Dr DNA, you missed out sex.
  6. In exactly the same way that we all have two halves.
  7. No, it's 4 quarters.
  8. WTF is the point of talking about a "prediction" of the result of the world cup; unless you can actually predict the whole outcome? Anyway I can predict the outcome in the same way he has. There are only a couple of dozen possible outcomes. I can set up a bunch of websites; each one says " Spain" or " Argentina". For each possible winning country there is a website that names them. When the competition is over I just publish the name of the "winning" website. Of course, I just ignore all the other websites I set up.
  9. Hi The first thing you need to do is tell us what EEI means.
  10. Another cheap and cheerful way to mix liquids is to blow air through them. A stream of bubbles flowing up through a drain pipe in the barrel might do the job. Of course, anything will do the job if you give it long enough.
  11. What the F is D?
  12. Isn't that most of the major monotheistic religions?
  13. I think I'm predestined to believe that I have free will.
  14. If you look at that structure you can see that to of the nitrogens "bonded" to the iron are already fully bonded to other things. The dotted lines to two of the nitrogens and solid lines to two others are there to indicate that there are, in effect, 2 bonds from the iron shared between the 4 nitrogens. Those are the 2 bonds that make it Fe(II). The other bonds (to the other haem nitrogens, the water and the histidine) are coordinate bonds. This might help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coordination_compound
  15. This might be a stupid question, how much does a cement mixer hold?
  16. It was perfectly clear to me what he meant. Calling them "rare earths" when most of them are not rare and none of them is an earth seems unhelpful so calling them the lanthanides or actinides is more correct.
  17. You asked the question and sought evidence. Fair enough. I provided the evidence- the constancy of the length of the day. This disproves your idea. Your "theory" is dead, if you keep hold of it you will just end up smelling bad. It would be better to clear out that "drawer" and throw away the rubbish. It will never find support because it does not agree with reality.
  18. "Seizing assets ensures money is available." If the assets are not there then the money is not available. If the assets are there then the money is already available. What difference does it make if BP sells the assets to pay for the clean-up or if the government seizes assets, sells them and pays for the clean-up? Since there's no advantage to the seizure and it might be unconstitutional why even suggest it? Could it be a desire for punitive revenge?
  19. It's good to know that we will soon find out who is best at kicking a ball round a field.
  20. Are you sure that the reaction of lithium oxide with dilute nitric acid would be slow? I would have expected "violent" to be a better description. I'd not bother with adding a flammable solvent like ethanol. Lithium reacts with water to produce the hydroxide. If you add the lithium slowly this is a vigorous, but not very dangerous reaction. I'd wear gloves and goggles just in case. You might be able to remove any oily scum from the water at this point. Adding dilute HCl or HNO3 to the solution of lithium hydroxide will give the salt.
  21. What, you work for IBM?
  22. I know this is off topic, but I just wondered something. How is this "I'm a student at Oxford University currently studying Philosophy and Law." relevant?
  23. You don't have to, but if the police turn up and arrest you (perhaps because you don't have a public entertainment license) that's your fault; you should have checked. (Incidentally, if it was me dancing it would be bad enough to count as "Behaviour likely to lead to a breach of the peace") Anyway the alternative is silly too. Imagine a world where ignorance is viewed as an excuse. In this weird world I kill someone because I don't like them. The law probably considers that this would count as murder. If I were to say "Oh, sorry, I didn't realise that was illegal- nobody ever told me" I could get off without charge.
  24. I am a chemist and I spend quite a lot of time separating chemicals. BTW, A good moonshiner is an artist too.
