so how long does it take for a sedimentary rock layer to form? When i point out that humans and dinosaurs could not have lived during the same period because of the dinos being in such a lower layer he just says that it doesnt take long for rock layers to form. Also when i talk about Pangea and ask how that could have all happened in 10,000 years he says it happened during "abrahams flood". What a load of crap. My father isnt what you would call "scientifically literate".

I recently got away from my dads religeon ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_conventions , dont even get me started on that cult) . He believes in a very literal translation of the bible. This means he believes that the earth is only around 10,000 years old. Whenever i try to tell him how he is wrong and how we can tell how old things are he just denies that it is possible to figure that out. I know that it has to do with looking at how much of a substance is left and then dating it with its half life (or something like that). He just doubts that we can know what the half life for a substance is. So my question is, how do we know how fast these rocks break down when it takes so long? Its very frustrating when he expects me to be able to prove every little thing, which i usually can, then he still denies it and wants me to believe something that he cant prove. O well i guess you cant fight ignorence... wow that turned into a long post for that simple question...

Its not that i dont agree with evolution i just dont know the answer to this question. There are still tons of apes around, so where are the in between stages? Did they die out? And if they did why wouldnt the apes die out also? Because it seems like if there can still be things like apes around why wouldnt we also have a bunch of big foots running around? This may seem a little repetative but why are there still apes. Im assuming its because there were two groups and one evolved and one didnt. Why wouldnt this happen with all other stages leading up to humans?

Forget physics or trying to end world hunger. The real debate is about this subject. I definitly say Spiderman. oh and yes, i have abolutlely NO life.

I dont understand how they could justify banning gay marriage. The only reason they would do this is because of their religeon which means there is no longer seperation of church and state. What if someone banned heterosexual marriages? This is no different. Why should one person be able to tell another person how to live their life? I dont care if you're morally opposed to it you have no right to impose your opinions on another person like that. just my thoughts about this.

Now im not saying that these men arent guilty and i think they should be in jail, but i dont know how they can be arrested. They say that it is because they were chatting with a minor about explicit acts and that when they are going to the homes that they were going to have sex with a minor. That may be so but the people they chatted with were legal adults pretending to be minors. Just because they say they are minors, it doesnt mean that they were. Sure you can show intent but they never actually broke a law. What do you guys think about this?

So how is chaos theory just a "theory"? It makes perfect sense. If something starts out some way it is going to end up a certain way. If you throw a baseball, depending on the initial conditions, if it is the exact same when you throw it again it is obviously not going to just randomly change.

And from what I understand about them (which is not very much) is that these two theories can not coexist. Again I know next to nothing about both of these but chaos theory says that you could theoretically predict any event if you know the initial conditions. Quantum physics on the other hand (and correct me if im wrong) says that you can only predict the probability of an event happening. I may be wrong on both of these but which is more accepted in the scientific community? Right now it seems like chaos theory makes a lot more sense but that may just be because i dont really understand quantum physics very much.

It would be nice if Bush would learn to speak the English language before making laws about it...

Yeah but should the money be spent on things like a 25x8 ft cabin with a lavatory, galley kitchen and stairs so he doesnt have to duck when exiting? Tax money should not be spent on luxery items for 1 man.

I read in a magazine that 6.1 billion dollars was just spent on the presidents helicoptor Marine 1. Does anyone else think this i a little excessive. I mean I completely understand that he needs to be safe but 6.1 billion? I dont think that people should have to pay taxes just for the money to go to a person and not the country.

the reason for the death penalty is because someone is a threat to society and need to be removed from it right? cant the same thing be achieved with life imprisonment? when you think about it the death penalty is about revenge and i dont think our legal system should be based on revenge.

Why couldnt someone have purple eyes or red eyes? Why is it limited to colors like blue, green and brown? It just seems weird to not be able to have certain colors when there are so many eye colors out there.

Today in Earth Science me leaned about how our universe is heliocentric (duh) but still he had to teach it. He gave us a list of reasons why we know that the galaxy is not geocentric. One of the reasons he gave us was that the heliocentric model was a lot simpler than the geocentric model and simpler is usually right. Why? just because something is simple doesnt make it correct. I just thought that this was really dumb reasoning. Can anyone explain why if something is simpler it is more likely to be right?

i found a copy of the time article so i showed that to him. he just keeps saying "the environment has natural cycles". o well i guess you cant reason with ignorence.

thats ok i showed it to him and he just kinda sat there and didnt say anything. i think he is in denial even though he still wont admit anything.

the problem though is he wont listen to anything i say. ill tell him all the facts but he just says thats because the "liberal media" is distorting everything and its all just treehugers with an agenda. he hides behind his religion so he doesnt have to face what is happening. its the same thing with all isues i try to discuss with him about science. so i think the ultimate question now is not the unifying theory of physics but how to get my dad to listen.
