  1. The North may have had a "motivated self-interest," but their acomplishment was hardly "intelligent," as they may have won the battle, but the civil rights movement did not rear its head until the mid 20th century. Six-hundred thousand lives were lost because of, yes, the "greed and transcendentalist" mentality of the North. The industrious North was losing business to other countries when it came to the South buying goods, because they recieved it cheaper from foreign nations. The North passed laws to keep them from doing this, hurting their economy and pushing them to secede from the Union. As nations like Britain and France saw an opportunity to side with the South during this confrontation, Lincoln turned the war into a moral crusade by turning the issue into slavery and thus kept the foreign nations from siding with a pro-slavery federation. And I agree with you, most of this is beside the point. However, I brought up the history to make people think about where these people would be without slavery. "They" were not slaves at all. And saying that they wouldn't be here without slavery (which is obvious), is not like saying they should be grateful for what happened. Look, they could be living one of two lives. 1) A life in their country of origin, which is a place I doubt most of them would want to live, or 2) a life here in America, even tho' it took the abuse of their ancestors to accomplish that. Be honest with yourself and think "which would they choose, to be living in their country of origin and have their ancestors be slaves to their own race (as they were before they were sold), or to have their ancestors act as slaves here in America so they could grow up in a progressive and devoloping country?" I think we both know the answer. And yes, history is sad and brutal, and this in not a pretty picture, but it is an accurate one. You say I oversimplify the intentions of African-Americans, but while there are exceptions to the rule, when you look at the culture they have developed in the past 150 years or so, you see it is a culture of materialism. Who can have the most expensive car, the most "bitches," the bigger television, the most expensive clothes, and they'll do almost anything to attain it: sell drugs, con welfare, steal, etc. For those who achieve a higher education, they want to attain high positions, and when they don't recieve it they complain about how it must be because of their skin color. They set up programs exclusive to blacks: scholarships, defamation leagues, and the like. But if a white person tried to establish such a thing, it would be "racist." Now don't get confused. I'm not a racist, I'm simply stating facts. The only problem I have with the culture of African-Americans is that it is mixing with our original culture and slowing the progression of society. You may not despise it at the moment, but maybe one day when your kid begins wearing baggy pants, listening to music about ho's and drugs, and talking gibberish, just maybe you'll come to abhor the blending of cultures in our country.
  2. Yes, slavery is wrong, and no one should be treated in that manner. That said, lets look at the issue in the big picture. We weren't the only nation using slaves, but they were used for economic efficiency. The land and potential profit emanating from the South was so plentiful that slaves seemed to be a good idea. The Civil War caused hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths as a resolution could have been met between the warring states. Instead the greed and transcendentalist mentality of the North remained constant, while the South simply wished to retain their way of life as it was vital to their economy. The slaves themselves retained a mentality reflective of their culture of origin during their captive years, and were set free into society after the war with little help from the Freedmans Bureau. This clashing of cultures between the freed slaves and their progeny, and Anglo America has resulted in many things that are destructive to our sociey. The North may have realized what they were fighting for, but I believe if they had known that they were setting up future problems for America, and what these problems would degenerate into, they would not have pursued abolishion. With proper foresight, the North should have sent the slaves back home to evade the coming clashing of cultures, which slows the progression of society to this day. You want to argue that blacks in this country would be better of today if their ancestors had not been enslaved, but I point out that had their ancestors not been enslaved, they would not be here. Point this out to them, and let them take a look at modern day Africa, the country they would reside if these "atrocities" had not occured, and I bet most would choose the abuse of their ancestors over having to live in an underdevoloped country. Americans haven't suppressed the entire nation of Africa, which lacks the proper economy, government, etc., so don't tell me they would be better off without what happened to their ancestors. Most are looking for a handout and nothing more. Affirmirmative action, reparations, and the clashing of cultures are indeed destructive to this country.
  3. TI-30?! Dude! Jesus called, he wants his calculator back! Haha, sorry I coundn't pass that up. Our math department has one of those in a display case like it's an ancient discovery. Anyways, I just got a TI-89 and I agree with CPL, it's well worth the extra cash. But before you go out and spend the money, check with your professor to see if you're allowed to use it. I can't use mine til next year =/
  4. Well I applaud the effort. Issues such as this always make me think of how "racist" it would be to have a white history month, or something of the sort. Total hypocrisy. I don't see any change resulting from this however. The clashing of cultures in American society slow its progression as some feed off of society, while others contribute.
  5. Ok, I refrained from looking at other posts for the first question, here's what I got: There are 3 forces acting on the object: The normal force [math]F_N[/math], the weight vector [math]W[/math], and the frictional static [math]f_s[/math]. Since acceleration only occurs in the x direction, we only consider [math]\sum F_x=ma[/math]. To find [math]f_s[/math], which is the only force acting in the x direction, I convert the mass to kilograms, and multipliy the normal force ( [math]F_N=40.9*9.8=400.82[/math] ) by the frictional coefficient of .9 to get 360.738 Newtons. Setting that equal to m*a and solving for a I get a=8.82m/s^2.
  6. That's pretty amazing. I think those robot legs are going to give me nightmares tho', just a bit creepy.
  7. Cool Well thanks for the responses, and thanks to Evo for the book recomendation, I'll try and track it down.
  8. Hmmm, it says Not Found when I try to register...
  9. So I'll be taking Linear Algebra come January, and I always like to be prepared or at least a little familiar with material I'm about to encounter. About linear algebra, I have no clue...I know it deals with matrices, at that's it, plus I'm a little rusty on those as I haven't worked any since high school. Can anyone give me a heads up on some of the general ideas of the course, what to look out for, or maybe even a recomended book?...ty
  10. 5/5 I believe ParanoiA left out the new trend these days known as shaving the bits. Guys don't even have hairy legs anymore. I can just picture them sitting in the tub, lathering up, and taking a gillette to their business. Now that's feminine.
  11. That was the best rant I've ever read on a science forum. But I must disect your rant to some degree, as it is SFN. I have to agree with YT2095 about speeding, it's just plain stupid putting other people in danger simply because you want to have a good time, and there's nothing manly about being an idiot. As for lotion, if you're rubbing it on yourself every 5 minutes or take it to work with you, yeah, that's a little gay. But just because you use it once in awhile doesn't make you effeminate. I also agree with the part on cologne, if you have to put it on, chances are you're inept to bathing properly.

    The EU

Well, if all of the IMF/World Bank bailouts ever catch up to us, it most certainly would destroy the dollar. If the free-traders got their way, I'm certain we would all be stuck with a global currency.

    The EU

Haha, nafta peso, that's classic. Of course I would dislike living in a society where the citizens have little or no say, but that's basically the society we're living under today. There may be many benifits to these free-trade agreements, but I believe the risk outweights the benifit as modern corporations haven't shown they can hold a great amount of responsibility and power without abusing it.

    The EU

First I must admit I don't know a great deal about the EU, but from what I gather, people tend to be opposed to it due to the bad reputation of globalization. In my opinion, those people have a good point which is quite simple: The more power that is consolidated, the easier it is to construct somewhat of a dictatorial rule, or at the very least, imposing policy unfavorable to a particular country. The EU, having established its own military, is like having a separate nation lording over another, only this non-existant nation will have a considerable sphere of influence within each country. The idea of an ignorant majority overpowering an intellectual and sincere minority, I believe, is the fear of those who are opposed to the EU.
  15. For the first problem, I just multiplied the numerator and denominator by , (ax+1)^1/3 +1. Then I separated the terms and took the limit as x goes to zero. Not 100% sure if that's right.
  16. [math]\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{(-1)^nn^3}{3^n}[/math] [math]\left|\frac{a_{n+1}}{a_n}\right|=\frac{(n+1)^3}{3^{n+1}}\frac{3^n}{n^3}=\frac{1}{3}{\frac{{n+1}^3}{{n}^3}}=\frac{1}{3}(1+\frac{n}n\right)^3[/math] How do I fix the abs. value and get ((n+1)/n)^3 instead of (n+1^3)/n?`
  17. I have to say that while I don't agree with Sitchin or Icke 100%, they do offer interesting views on the creation of mankind. I know Sitchin is one of only a handful of people that can translate Sumerian text. To put it in context, that's having the ability to translate the ideas and documentations of the oldest civilization know to man, in which case, I take his observations quite seriously. We may never know about our origins, but if we continually dismiss out-of-the-ordinary interpretations of our development, we'll almost certainly never find the answer.
  18. I tried to plot the function along with x=-1, like this: plot([f,x=-1],-10..10); and the function f plots fine but an error appears for x=-1. Edit: I found I can use a line segment instead by plotting 2 points, but thanks for the reply.
  19. I'm having trouble graphing vertical lines using Maple Classic. So far I've defined a function and its derivative, and have graphed both. Next I found where f` is equal to zero and I have two points resulting from that. I have to graph vertical lines at these points. I looked through my book and all over google and I can't find one reference to plotting a vertical line, can anyone help please?...
  20. I'm taking a Calculus I/II lab, and we're using classic Maple. Well, here's the story: A week ago I was about to turn in my second homework assignment when I tried to pull up the Maple sheet I had saved on the schools network and received the message "There were problems during the loading process. Your worksheet may be incomplete." With that, over half of my homework was gone. My professor made me rework some of the problems and suggested I save my next assignment to a flash drive as a back-up. This week, I saved my homework to my flash drive. Everything was working fine all day until 30 minutes ago I try to load my worksheet, and again, over half of my work is gone. I tried both the flash drive and the schools network and received the same message stated above on both. For some reason this is only happening to me and no one else in the class. If I tell my professor the same story tomorrow, he'll most certainly be frustrated (like me). Is there any way to retrieve my work?...
  21. Cool, thanks for the replies. If I'm getting this right it means that vector A sub x (sorry I'm horrible with latex) is simply the magnitude of the vector while i hat is just a unit of 1, but can be negative or positive to represent direction.
  22. I just finished learning about vector components in my class, and I was hoping to understand the vector notation i hat, j hat, and k hat, but our book doesn't use that notation and gives an unsatisfying description of what the bold units stand for. Can someone please give me an overview of what they mean, and why they are without units? Thanks...
  23. Haha, that's ridiculous. I guess mods have to flex their muscles once in awhile tho'.
  24. It was in "stress relief" in general discussion, didn't know you could help, I just wanted to bitch
