Hi all. Photovoltaic solar panels are around 18% efficient. That means a 1m2 panel should yield about 180 Watts to heat something electrically at full sun. What is the typical efficiency extracting heat directly from sun radiation, assuming also 1KW/m2 irradiance as in a 1m2 uncovered coil like : http://getgotechnology.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Sun-Coil-heating.jpg Would it be around 60% ? Wind and thermal losses should be taking a good chunk, right ?

Hello all. Many years ago, saw painters (overseas) using milk to prepare their something, did not pay enough attention; unsure if was for a sub-base to walls or the finish paint itself. Remember seeing a never-sanded glass-like smooth surface on walls before applying paint. Perhaps that was the intention ? How does it work, how come there is no bacterial degradation with something prepared with milk ? I do have search engines but not interested in proportions and preparation, but more on your chemical explanation part of it.

Genady : Are you talking about fertile eggs ?
-
Hi. Hens do lay eggs without intervention of males of the species. That has to be a considerable expense and waste of resources. What is going on ? Why do eagles, ducks, pelicans... do not ? Or do they ?

When in need to feed a starving -say dog- to keep alive; is a less valuable and proper choice to feed such dog with a mole or with a chicken ? We humans can prefer to 'discard' the life of a mole to feed the dog instead of a more 'appreciated' chicken. If that dog did bite your child, is the value the same ? Or, why humans prefer to not fish whales that consume millions of lives daily instead of maintaining alive millions of shrimp ? What can induce thinking the life of a giraffe is better to keep than the life of a beetle ? Is size a factor ? Is useability a factor ? Is sentiment a factor ? Your cat is more valuable to you than a feral cat in Namibia is to that native human there. Humans can give a value of preference that am trying to take out of consideration. Do all lives have the same rights to survive ? Am not good enough about expressing myself. Hope there is a recognizable idea above.

Greetings. Is there intrinsic value (not given by humans) to different species ? Which is more valuable ? A mouse or a rabbit ? A sardine or a shrimp ? A camel or a donkey ? A watermelon plant or a maize plant ? A bee or a wasp ? A vulture or a seagull ? Or are all lives the same value, be it a hummingbird or a crab ?

Fact from several years ago... A captured kidnapper finally revealed the location of the victim held by his other criminal fellows when a hired team of 'inquisition descendants' opened his belly with a knife and pulled his intestines out, while interrogated well alive. The kidnapped victim was located; later the 'disemboweled' crook was left to die tied to his bed surrounded by his guts; I call that mostly mental torture pretty much. A smile was worked on his dead face and the picture given to the press to show the prisoner was just... fine. Torture was then very right for finding the victim. -My boss, a multi millionaire philanthropist-

Good day. Clearing the snow off my panels on he roof as it will be sunny the next week but still under 0oC and I wanted them generating, got curious... Sun does warm up solar panels, no doubt. Ambient too. But is panels heating only product of the solar radiation + environment or the panels themselves add warmth by the current produced ? In other words; a solar panel that has reached its temperature plateau under the sun while disconnected (no current flowing); it will increase its temperature when connected to a load and current flows, right ?

Frequently I encounter situations I cannot discern. Example: Touching the volume knob on a "smart" phone device, the screen shows an interactive icon among other things... Is that telling me that the bell is off or is it a button to turn the bell off ? How to know what these "intuitive" icons mean ? There is nothing that helps identify it as a button nor a signal. Do I need a second brain transplant ? Does it happen to you too ? How do you resolve the doubt ? What is crooked in my thinking ? Is implementing these things a product of intelligent or idiots designing operational interfaces ? Are these meant for intelligent operators or for idiots ?

Surprised I did not know these existed and I have been well into the recording industry since young. Anyone knows about them ? At a local recycling store, saw this. Compared to a normal 12 inch 'long play' on the picture :

Hi. Magma is supposed to be in underground chambers and branches that may or may not be some day expelled by eruptions. Petroleum is supposed to be in underground chambers and branches too. I have never known of a reported volcanic eruption that the magma flowed/passed trough into a petroleum deposit and both ended on earth surface as a fiery explosive combustion from hydrocarbons fuel + heat + fire + oxygen. Is there a reason why such coincidental path event does not happen ? 😱

What does the average person care about?
Externet replied to BushMaster's topic in General Philosophy
If am average, I care about not being lazy; as I find people's lazyness connects to like ~90% of problems of today. Exception --- I found no lazyness in people that plays with smart phones all day instead of working. They reeeeaaaally work on it. Plus in second place, the pursuit of comfort. Exception --- They feel no discomfort when looking for a way to milk the goverment or institutions on how to get away collecting free money and aids with minimal work effort. Well, that really applies to the paragraph above. and one more, the pursuit of undeserved pleasure. No matter if someone is not successful, their ideal image is seeing themselves lying on a beach with a server bringing a beer, while scratching 'tonsills' all day as a way of life. -

Diver too. The only way I know of is to not use a wet/dry suit. Weights requiered would be then minimal or null. Which can bring complains of cold instead of weight. And a diver in a proper physical fitness to do the sport/work that is bothered by wearing a weight belt is unheard of 🤫. Attaching weight to the tank instead of waist is not a contemplated alternative. If your aim is comfort and not exactly the weight itself, my 3 hollow belts are filled with lead shot instead of the 'bricks', making then more manageable. Modern ones use removable lead shot pockets, have those too, sewn by me. If any of those are not of your approval, let the weights drop to the bottom of the sea when you climb back to the boat. Buy more for the next dive$.

Is it easy to shade the Earth for cooling?
Externet replied to Kevin_Hall's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Placing the foil on the earth surface will not be restricted to equatorial shading, Will not last much under the wind, will create complains, but will equally shade/reflect. -
Is it easy to shade the Earth for cooling?
Externet replied to Kevin_Hall's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
A 1km2 reflective/shading foil in orbit at 1000km altitude will create the same shade as placing the same 1km2 foil on top of the earth soil at the warmest place or where cooling may be most needed (Sahara?, Arizona?) without the cost/energy of launching it. -
Cookies Monster: Thoughts on Science and Art of Making Cookies
Externet replied to tylers100's topic in The Lounge
Sadly, that depends on each one's taste and opinion... Omitting/changing what in the recipe makes it not a cookie any more ? That brings defining a cookie first...😋 -
Magnets aren't challenging law of energy?
Externet replied to Bhargav Patel's topic in Classical Physics
Isn't energy Wattshours or Joules instead ? -
What got stuck in its development, what is the bottleneck ? Have heard nothing in almost a decade 😟
