  1. Side question... DNS is like a telephone directory, where names are shown as their equivalent numbers; example scienceforum.net is 153.229.14.32 or something like that. And if the DNS is kaput, if I know and type instead of scienceforums.net that IP address "153.229.14.32" I should arrive to this site, right ? Sorry, am s l o w . I do not know how to find the 'numerical' IP address of devices or sites.😪 Thanks... I will now try the suggestions on last 2 posts.
  2. Thanks Ghideon. I can access the gateway 'reports' at 192.168.100.1 if that means anything. Typing https://8.8.8.8 at address responds as "is unreachable"
  3. Thanks MigL. I do not know what an antivirus is. Have not had such since 2005 when abandoned Windows.
  4. Thanks. Following Sensei suggestion will take longer for me to digest. Will put good effort to understand it, even no Windows here. At the moment, this computer is working normal interacting with scienceforums; the tuner is showing live RAI (Italia) broadcast news but the Chromebook complains about DNS probe.failed.
  5. Greetings. The flag bearer of computer idiots again. Get the DNS probe error in a Chromebook. Before was also in the Linux machine. Power cycling all several times allowed me to enter the internet to post this. There is nothing Windows in my home. There is nothing wireless in my home. Have three ethernet wired devices to the gateway (modem?): A Linux computer; a Chromebook computer, a tuner that receives internet television from the whole planet. Most of the time all works well, but something gets the 'period' and I cannot solve what cannot understand. Reading related articles on the web; they assume everyone uses Windows+Chrome+Wifi and do not apply for me to attempt the fix. Any idiot-proof guidance to cure the misbehavior will be appreciated.
  6. Hi. Picture a bunch of solar panels on a roof to generate 3KW electricity. The purpose, to heat a dwelling, nothing else. No connection to mains, no inverter to supply appliances nor lighting. Just heat. Powering a heater during the daylight hours, warming the dwelling plus heating up something that will release warmth at night time. A water reservoir works well absorbing/releasing heat, but needs piping implemented toward radiators like in some very old houses. Barrels of rocks heated by electric elements can warm air passing trough them to release warm air at nights into existing HVAC ducts. What if the rocks are replaced by iron scrap, like engine blocks in barrels ? What convenient dry material would better retain heat per volume ?

  8. Found out today that China is building a 500 metres diameter telescope antenna in PingTang, to start operating in 2021 😀 Can someone explain the convenience of making this one spherical instead of parabolic ?
  9. Hi. Is it possible to reduce all about arc welding; like using a sewing needle-size electrode, much less current... to work on tiny parts, with either arc, TIG or MIG ? 🙄 By the way... is there a minimum size for a flame; that smaller does not sustain ?
  10. I would call its proper chemical compound name, not nitrogen. If it is injecting ammonia, then, ammonia fertilizer. Not nitrogen.😳
  11. I prefer not-popular forum sites with few well educated members than 'popular' sites pushing to social characteristics discussing garbage. So, thank you for not making this forum popular crowded to your taste.
  12. Nitrogen... Can you PLEASE be very precise ? Am sick of wrong easy lazy wording in science. Is it properly 'potassium nitrate', 'calcium nitrate' , 'ammonium nitrate' , nitrophosphate fertilizing compounds instead of 'nitrogen' ?? Nitrogen is in the air, are you referring to a component of air as fertilizer ?? What is the scientific proper terminology for what vulgars name as nitrogen fertilizer ?
  13. Hi. News report it is coming with lunar rock samples and will land in Australia in few days... Also, Japanese probe heading back to earth with hopefully samples from meteorite on board.
  14. What are the requirements to receive the vaccine ? Do recipients need to not be infected or tested negative for the virus ? Do recipients need to not have antibodies for it ? Do recipients must be healthy or not hospitalized with other illnesses ? Is that depending on the vaccine manufacturer like each manufacturer having their rules ? Will a certificate be issued to the recipient as to allow travel ?
  15. Several recent hurricanes in the region contributed to the failure. Earthquakes helped too; 'Maria' hurricane in 2017; In August 2020 a suspension cable broke starting the end : 7 November 2020. The broken cable shown hanging down :
  16. Sad news :
  17. On the news, a monolith someone had fun placing in the desert, worth spending a couple of nostalgic minutes...
  18. Solar heat collector: I do not know what a 'halfpipe' is, but a whole pipe for sure works for well under $800 unless you go lenghty big diametres. Irrigation pipe is not expensive. Place under a clear plastic sheet/box/film so wind does not takes away the heat collected; or/and recirculate to a storage tank in basement. Maintenance is near null.
  19. Thank you. Found some reading on the photons subject. Believe there is no such thing as half a photon, right ? ----> https://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/Quantum/see_a_photon.html#:~:text=Since only about 10% of,actually required at the receptors.
  20. The time for visual persistence is typically taken as 1/30th of a second; what is the minimal time a light should be on to recognize its brief presence ? Example, a high speed mechanical shutter wheel in front of a light source. (Or a pulse on LED) The light passes a slot to the eye for one millisecond. Probable visible. What if one microsecond ? Would that time be long enough to be detected by the eye ? Is there a name for that 'time sensitivity' ?

    Millipedes...

Hi. A just born millipede has less legs count and new ones are created with age, or at birth has the full count and legs grow larger with age ? 🙄
  22. Greetings. Do you know of a simpler simulator program on the web to find times a model submarine takes to sink to bottom of a reservoir; and time it takes to reach surface from bottom when its buoyancy is changed/controlled ? Thanks
  23. Greetings. When I walked on the Galapagos glasslike volcanic soil, nothing grows on it, perhaps saw a lost lizard. How many centuries takes for that soil to turn to the "great soil of volcanic origin" often described covered by lush jungle vegetation ? How does lava converts to fertile soil ?
  24. Hi all. Which is wrong ? 'Door' or all the others ? door is not pronounced as poor book wood root tooth cook boost doom roof good hood cool food loop mood boot soot school And 'here' and 'there' ; differ by the added 'T' with a substantial pronunciation difference, being actually more like 'der'. (another silent E.) 🤔
