Didn't your mommy ever teach you the value of not being ignorant?
  2. Once we start having the ability to colonize other planets, we'll be alot more motivated towards progress.
  3. I'd say by 2020.
  4. As reported in Nature Science Update, the European Astrophysical Virtual Observatory is scheduled to open today. For those not familiar with the project, it combines that power of 6 astronomy centers and makes data from all of them, including visual, gamma-ray, X-ray and radio-wave images of stars, galaxies, supernovae, black holes and gamma-ray busts available over the internet for astronmers to examine and cross-reference. This will also give us a more detailed view of the skies that ever before possible. See also http://www.euro-vo.org/
  5. I don't believe you're actually trying this

Kind of what the government is doing with copyrights and the DMCA.
  7. On a more legitimate note, if we went around urinating and defecating everywhere, it would make us easier to track by predators.
  8. i know some people who would.

I guess they should have outlawed rocks. And appendages like arms that can be used to punch people.

To fix all the ancient mainframes of companies that can't/won't upgrade.
  13. Especially at a private college. :dunno:
  14. here's my suggestion: don't waste your time
  15. We've got the technological ability, but will we really have the financial ability?
  16. Also possible is to leave all current categories for forums as sub-forums with the topic headers being general forums.
  17. The recent measurement said c=vg within 20%, and not only is that wildy inaccurate (since we can measure c to many decimal places), but it was published in New Scientist; why not in Science or Nature or an APS journal?
  18. People hear doctors make upwards of $250,000 a year or more, and ask what they're complaining about. What they don't seem to understand, is $200,000 of that goes to malpractice insurance. Neurosurgeons typically need to earn $1,000,000 per yer to break even. I support the walkouts.

Other countries breeding supersoldiers is another reason the US can't/won't outlaw it, despite what the Pope told Bush he wanted him to do. The military is already working on the project, and even if it is outlawed wouldn't stop.
  20. Actually there have been a couple recent walkouts that resulted in some serious cases being transferred to hospitals in other states.

Genetic variance is not as important as it once was, since there are no predators. Furthermore, manipulating a few characteristics wouldn't impact genetic variance amongst other features. Furhtermore, perfection is also subjective. Not all people would want the same modifications. This would also promote variance.

Why is it acceptable to make ourselves better at all then? If I don't like having blonde hair, why is it acceptable to dye it, but not acceptable to have my genes treated to change it? We're not always born the way we want. But who wants to be born with a low iq and no athletic ability?

Believe me, we'd learn to limit it. Resources would run out and a large number of people would die; and the future generations would realize the importance. Since most people wouldn't want to live forever, suicide would be an option. Also, time would allow those in undesirable positions to improve their skills and move up. If our greatest minds had continued to work for many more years, we would already be colonizing other worlds, which would obviously help with overpopulation and supply shortage.

But why not ameliorate ourselves? If you find it acceptable to eliminate disease through gene manipulation, then what about altering other genes that make us prone to conditions like alcohol or obesity? What if one of the disease causing genes is part of a polygenic trait that results in a cosmetic change? Then is it wrong?

Immortality would not be catastrophic. First of all, I'm sure we would have the sense to limit the birth rate, and second of all, if all the geniuses of the ages were continued to live, we'd be much better able to handle it.
