  1. I give up trying to explain this to you people :/ All I can say is read all the lecture notes I posted, then you should be understanding it at a high enough level.
  2. I learned to do it just by visualizing what monomials could be multiplied to get the quadratic or cubic i wanted... though this process became extremely time consuming with quartic, quintic, and up orders :/ I actually wrote an algorithm in visual basic to expand and factor polynomials as part of my symbolic manipulation calculator. i'll find the source and post it.

put them all on an island with no boats.
  5. but then we evolved jk
  6. A curvature in space-time causes the "attraction" of gravity. Gravity doesn't cause the objects to move directly. If this were the case, gravity could not act on light.
  7. There's just the space-time continuum. There's not quite as much "empty" space as you think here on Earth. Neutrinos, radiation (which, by the way, is present throughout the universe, and all though massless, is all pervading.. the cosmic background.) And of course on Earth we have cell phone signals, radio, television, and satellite all filling the "empty" space. In your example, the room isn't empty. What we consider empty isn't the same as truly empty.
  8. It's really hard to explain, but space-time is the medium in which massive objects exist... you've probably heard of the "fabric" of space-time. It doesn't require mass as we know it to be warped.
  9. Gravity acts on space-time, influences on mass are incidental.

I wish. It angers me so much.

and the 11% of people who couldn't find this country on the map should be deported.

That law should be national. Not only that, people should be required to pass a test before voting. Idiots who go in a just vote for a sake of voting and have no actual knowledge of the issues should be barred from voting.
  13. Just because there's an indirect link doesn't mean they're the same force, mr. zarkov.
  14. A single pebble doesn't weight too much. But the Earth weighs ALOT. Black holes are extremely dense particles, multiplying gravity by a factor in the trillions (higher?). It doesn't actually effect light directly, but since the space-time continuum is deformed, light would have no reason to not follow it into the hole. Also, magnetic force is completely different than gravitational force.

From http://www.cnn.com/2002/EDUCATION/11/20/geography.quiz/index.html Among 18- to 24-year-old Americans given maps: 87 percent cannot find Iraq 83 percent cannot find Afghanistan 76 percent cannot find Saudi Arabia 70 percent cannot find New Jersey 49 percent cannot find New York 11 percent cannot find the United States This is disgusting. And people wonder why I hate ignorance so much.
  16. Your brain travelling faster than light seems logical? Seriously, researchers have concluded it's caused by specific expectations and similarity to past events (both are subconscious). That's not déjà vu, thats just your acid trip
  17. Actually, the "runs" are due to water absorbtion efficienfy in the epithelial cells lining the large intestine, not e-coli are other symbiotic bacteria.
  18. Other species haven't evolved the technological capability to do otherwise. So no species has ever gone extinct without humans forcing it? A population will spread out into whatever nearby environments it's suited to live in; with humans this is virtually all. Again, if animals knew how, they'd do the same thing as us. There's evidence suggesting the ozone would develop holes on its own anyway. And if CO2 causes ozone holes it would have been gone millennia ago since all plants produce it all the time. I think you mean CO (carbon monoxide). Alternative fuel systems being developped, though financially costful, do little or no damage to the environment. Hydrogen fuel cells, for example, have a waste product of water.
  19. The agressive women would be in power. A strong leader is agressive, and agression will inevitably lead to war. It takes agression to run for office.

    Our Origins

There is no such protein as "chlorophyll." Chlorophyll is a FAMILY of proteins, they vary. Not all plants are green, so then by your logic how would they photosynthesize? Different chlorophylls absorb different wavelengths of light. By far the most common are the ones that absorb 680nm and 700nm wavelengths, which are green, but others exist. Bacteria, such as cyanobacteria, perform photosynthesis with an entirely different family, the rhodopsins. Also in the case of chloroplasts, it is important to discuss the endosymbiotic theory. The evidence for this theory suggests that chloroplasts were once free-living organisms that were incorporated into eukaryotic cells. This would account for teh similarity. -- On respiration, the similarity lies in the efficiency; this is the most efficient system that has evolved for the needs of sentient organisms. This is the result of common ancestors. Same for the circulatory system. You can see a clear line of development in the circulatory system as organisms become more advanced. And of course there are variants in this.
  21. Since some women are more agressive, they would be the ones who fought to get power; things wouldn't be that different as far as war.
  22. I wasn't talking to you. But if it has no advantge or disadvantage, it wouldn't be eliminated.
  23. I have created a banner and buttons if you wish to link to us. They are standard sized (468x60, 120x60, 88x31) JPGs in the attached zip. The raw render from 3dsmax is available at http://fafalone.hypermart.net/scienceforums/ ( (very) high-resolution TIF) if you wish to resize it to other dimensions for other use. Note: I noticed that for some reason QuickTime apparently thinks it can open .tif files. It cannot. Use Save Target As (or equiv in your browser) and open it with a program that can actually read that format, or your browser may freeze. sf_images.zip
  24. i guess emma is in trouble, spending so much time with rikky and all.
  25. Ok, once against the lack of understanding of evolution is apparent here. Let's look at the example of giraffes. Each time the neck became longer, it was more of an advantage. A giraffe with a neck half as long as the ones now would still be an advantage over previous contemporary generations. Intermediates ARE more of an advantage.
