  1. Tachyons are a very real part of some of the modern cosmological theories, not just some Star Trek concept that has no basis in reality. A good place to check out how real the theories are is http://arxiv.org, and search for tachyon.
  2. Dense enough to be a black hole is a really bad idea... matter can be dense enough to create a gravity field without being a black hole.
  3. Well it would be relatively simple (and scientifically plausible) to use superdense matter (i.e. from a collapsed star, or more likely since its on Mars a new method for collapsing matter) buried reasonably far under the surface to increase the gravity...
  4. After 2 years of searching, a South Carolina psychiatrist found an Institutional Review Board to approve a limited clinical trial that will use MDMA (Ecstacy, X, ADAM) in psychotherapy on a group of women suffering from PTSD resulting from rape or other violence. The study will be placebo controlled and limited to a group of 20 in the first round. Despite its use as an adjunct to psychotherapy in the 1970s, MDMA was made a Schedule I drug and this is the first study approved since it was scheduled. Hopefully this is a very small step towards a better understanding of the potential benefits of DEA-vilified substances. http://www.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/02/25/ecstasy.study/index.html
  5. That's just another way for the government to discriminate.
  6. Hmmm... I actually don't mind the use of these, so long as its not illegal to rip them out
  7. Pot is linked to loss of short-term memory in continuous use over long periods of time. There's really nothing to suggest the type of short-term memory loss from single instance use, unlike alcohol and some other substances.
  8. It's the number of users divided by the number of deaths attributable to that substance. Not raw numbers.
  9. Some more facts: The mortality rate of tobacco smokers is indeed higher than that of heroin users. We covered this in last Thursdays class. There are approximately 5 times as many occaisonal recreational users of heroin than there are heroin addicts. (Relevant to previous claims about the addictive properties being much higher)
  10. Our president has officially announced his desire to have a consitutional amendment that prevents homosexual couples from being married, but allows for a "civil union" where full rights are "guaranteed". Apparently Bush missed the part of intro to political science where "separate but equal" was found to be inherently discriminatory. And the part about separation of church and state. And the 14th amendment. He also keeps insisting the people should decide this matter, since he also seems to have missed the basic concept of why we have a republic and not a democracy.. because the majority can too easily trample the rights of the minority.
  11. My post was on topic
  12. We've launched a nuclear powered satellite before. It was called Cassini, carried 72lbs of plutonium fuel, and will arrive at its destination (Saturn) this year, after a journey that started in 1997. In fact, NASA has launched 23 nuclear powered satellites, but none as large as the last one. There's even been a couple of accidents, but the containers of the plutonium didn't rupture.
  13. As to quantum mechanical uncertainty, calculations have been done suggesting this is not signficant enough to cause a neuron to fire.
  14. If you had a decent telescope and viewed from somewhere away from cities you could probably see a bunch of them. I went star gazing last week here in Miami with the Southern Cross Astronomy Society, and they had same very (very) nice telescopes to look through, I'd imagine in a non-city area one could definately see galaxies, but maybe not be able to differentiate them from stars without some better equipment.

    Ecstasy

Wouldn't it be a very bad idea to be using an MAOI? MAO breaks down the drug...

    Ecstasy

I'd imagine any other SSRI could be substituted for Prozac... such as sertraline.
  17. Magic Mushrooms contain psilocybin as the active chemical, which is structurally and chemically dissimilar to LSD, not nearly as strong.
  18. Thanks for the correction on the mechanism of action. One tends to see a world created by their mind while on DMT/DPT... completely replacing the real one in higher doses when smoked or IV... in fact with those methods you're not even able to move around for a short while... it's a bit beyond the simple visual distortions with lower doses or with less powerfull agents (lsd, psilocybin). Another physciological effect associated with LSD is the complete cessation of electrical acitivity in 5-HTergic cells of the raphe nuclei, I am not aware of any physiological evidence of neurotoxicity to 5-HT2 receptors; and flashbacks are a non-specific response that are triggered by intense emotional experiences rather than just the drug. Some LSD-related changes to light sensitivity were hypothesized to be the result of permanent damage, however this conclusion was not supported by any kind of molecular studies and hence it's very hard to rule out a psychological cause. With DMT, permanent receptor changes are even less likely because unlike LSD, DMT (and another simple tryptamine derivatives) do not create tolerance.
  19. Yeah. Theres about 450 other sites on the same server.
  20. I'd have to say sleep deprivation then.
  21. Blocks reuptake of serotonin, drastically increasing its activity. The mechanism by which neurotransmitter activity translates into cognitive effects is very poorly understood.
  22. Well, DPT is currently legal because the DEA hasn't heard of it, and its essentially equivalent in effect to DMT (see the hallucinations thread)... and in lower doses (10-15mg insufflated) would produce those effects. You could also try the dissociative DXM (found in some cough syrups), but that's linked to severe brain damage.
  23. Hallucinations are most likely the result of the disruption of serotonergic neurons, which are primarily located in the brain. The connection exists that these both be disrupted by a lack of sleep, which has numerous effects on neurochemical concentrations (serotonin in this case), and drugs that act on serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) systems, like DMT (dimethyltryptamine), a hallucinogen far more powerful than LSD.

    Guns

So that if you miss, you have time to shoot at your target again before its gone. And automatic weapons are very useful for taking todays modern superanimals, like the flying squirrel.
  25. The satellites are automatically corrected for the effects of the moons pull. Some satellites are even corrected for relativity.
