  1. WE DON'T HAVE A FORCE FIELD. WE DON'T GO THROUGH OBJECTS BECAUSE OF THE ELECTROSTATIC REPULSION, WHICH, AS THE NAME IMPLIES, IS DUE TO THE ELECTROMAGNETIC FORCE, AND THEREFORE AN ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD. Thank you.
  2. Two things. 1. It's not strictly speaking a force field, it's a field of electric potential. 2. It's not what he was talking about. You're not right on any level.
  3. That's just being obtuse. re: the original question, there is nothing really expected to the level of something like Star Trek, but there is always the future.
  4. He's not a dog, he's advanced.
  5. 'Ladder' implies discrete stages, not a constant state of transition, so I'd disagree with such a thing validly existing by today's science.
  6. I find it to be reasonably reliable, although as its community written it's not a definitive source.
  7. There's a description of a 3 sex society in Iain M Banks's Player of Games. Of course, you could always turn to the Futurama Smizmar concept.
  8. Just quiet facts then. 'No', to the original topic. That's not the kind of thing that we really want to propagate and encourage in this environment.
  9. We'll fall at g. The lift may not.
  10. Why not post them in the Engineering forum? Or are you suggesting that the readers of SF.N are so braindead that they can't do anything there isn't specifically a forum for?
  11. I think you'll find they're all fictional. 'Fiction' merely means that it didn't actuall happen, not that it's set in a real-world context.
  12. It's a 'controversial' *cough* subject with some members of the site.
  13. I think we should have a subforum for every thread.
  14. Yes they do. The character models especially (look at the critter). The dynamic lighting is a step forward, and there are a huge number of other improvements. The UT2K4 engine is 2 or 3 years old by this point; the Doom 3 engine is bleeding edge. Bandwidth, yes. But Bandwidth =! Download/Upload. Online games usually use a hideously small amount of actual traffic. From what I hear, it's just a 'community enhanced' (whatever that means) of the stolen Alpha code from last year. There's no 'out', strictly speaking, and it definitely isn't legal, complete, or guaranteed to not do things to your computer.
  15. That was just a euphemism for 'not at all', I'm afraid.
  16. Ah. The No True Scotsman fallacy. Very good, move along.
  17. It really doesn't matter in the slightest.
  18. That's the most wonderfully irrelevent 'Argument from authority' that I've ever heard.
  19. Livejournals for fun and profit
