  1. The way I was taught, you just have to pull a number out of nowhere. It's possible to memorize some of it, as some metals are predictable, but there's no pattern -- you just have to know.
  2. I don't think any third party candidate really stands a chance as it is.
  3. We could do more than one T-shirt design, if several are popular.
  4. Because you were busy avoiding allocating your neurons. Wait, I just had to think about that...
  5. Ah. Sorry, it was a bit hard to read. I don't feel like the Internet is qualified to answer these questions, but that instead you should pursue things further with the doctors. It sounds like there's something radically wrong, and you don't want to trust your mental health to the Internet.
  6. Have you seen a doctor about this?
  7. Dude, calling people idiots isn't really the best way to continue leading by example. Responding to "idiocy" with flaming isn't the best strategy.
  8. Regarding just this bit: It's possible that this is about the funding and not about you. That is, a lot of PhD programs are dependent on grants and research money to pay for their students, and if they don't have enough money, they have to turn down perfectly good applicants. That's not a reflection on you, of course, just on how much money they're getting. The fact that they offered you a position that may be getting funding soon hints that while they might not be able to afford to hire you now, they probably will be able to soon, and they're actually interested in doing so. So don't get too worried yet.
  9. There are a number of products that connect with USB and come with software to automatically back up the computer when the drive is connected. "One-touch backup" or something, since you just plug it in and hit a button.
  10. Are you suggesting to send the signal on multiple frequencies at once?
  11. Let's stick to just using the one thread on this subject, rather than having two or three copies. [thread]50887[/thread]
  12. I'm no psychiatrist, but this smells like shyness, plain and simple. If this were some evolutionary defense mechanism, you wouldn't be attracted to pictures of women, either. But you are. You don't think you're attracted to "real" women because you're shy. I'm generally a shy person, and it's a tough habit to break, but when you do (and it can be done!), you'll be glad you did. If you just try to rationalize your situation and say "oh, I'm evolved to be this way," you're just dooming yourself to never change.
  13. First of all, check your degree program. You may be taking introductory chemistry in college anyway.
  14. I use ScienceForums.net (which, incidentally, means that if my email stops working, it's probably my fault)
  15. What advertisements? If you're talking about the Genius sidebar, you can turn that off with View -> Show Genius Sidebar. You can also delete duplicates by simply hitting the Delete key...
  16. This is much easier: [math]\vec{a} (\vec{b} \cdot \vec{c})[/math] Use LaTeX to get the point across.
  17. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/04/using-site-speed-in-web-search-ranking.html? Time to make sure SFN is blazing fast...
  18. I'm told you want to be careful with the water pressure settings.
  19. That's rather vague, isn't it? I use it just fine.
  20. I am told by my dad, who has visited Japan a few times, that if you press the wrong buttons on the toilet, it feels like the jet could cut holes through stainless steel.
  21. Pro Tip: If you notice, my Mathematica code is six lines long, only one line of which is the integral. The other five are required to set up the problem. Especially the VectorAnalysis line. Expecting everyone here to know how to set up Mathematica code for a path integral in one line is rather stupid, since I think I'm the only one here with a copy of Mathematica and I had to take six lines. At this point, I just find it funny that you'd rather believe that I'm lying about Mathematica computing the integral, that the sources and textbooks I quoted are wrong, that swansont (check his profile, hit About Me) is clueless, and that the rest of us are lying about our competence in this subject, rather than simply admitting that you're wrong. Clearly this is going to be highly productive. Especially when you get all condescending and insulting.
  22. I highly suggest the book The Science of Good and Evil to answer questions like that. It discusses how the basics of morality likely evolved as we became social animals. In other words, acting morally is an evolved behavior, not a result of religion.
  23. [attach]2456[/attach] Do you believe I am lying?
  24. Have you tried the Mathematica player? I provided you a screenshot of the computed code. Are you suggesting I faked it? Hint: Wolfram Alpha can't do everything Mathematica can.
