  1. Penguin.
  2. On a whim, I've made a new Experimental style (available in the switcher at the bottom left of every page) that I will be testing some new ideas and features in while trying to make vBulletin less bad. The first change to appear in Experimental is a new, sleek thread listing style. Hit New Posts and you'll see the difference{ the forum each thread is from is listed underneath its title rather than on on the far right, freeing up some horizontal space for long thread titles and making it easier to tell where threads came from. And I've eliminated the annoying thread icon column to make the most of our horizontal space. If you have any comments or suggestions on the adjustments, post them here. If nobody finds them too hideous, I'll eventually move them over to the main SFN style. Next up: more tweaks to post layout to try to make the most of space and make threads easier to read.
  3. You don't really need to vote for me. A true Dr. Evil does not need votes to rule the world.
  4. Your integration seems correct. As for the deriving... [math]\frac{d}{dx} \frac{-1}{2(2 + x^2)} = \frac{d}{dx} -1 (4 + 2x^2)^{-1}[/math] [math]= (4 + 2x^2)^{-2} (4x)[/math] [math]= \frac{4x}{(4 + 2x^2)^2}[/math] [math]= \frac{4x}{16 + 16x^2 + 4x^4}[/math] [math]= \frac{4x}{4(4 + 4x^2 + x^4)}[/math] [math]= \frac{4x}{4(2 + x^2)^2}[/math] [math]= \frac{x}{(2 + x^2)^2}[/math] Poof. You had it right all along.
  5. I think the news item on their front page refers to a much older event. What happened, from what I recall, is that someone hacked TalkOrigins and managed to get the site to display hidden spam links at the bottom of pages, making Google think it was a spam site and thus getting it removed from Google. They fixed that issue a while ago. PZ Myers says they've had some technical issues.
  6. This website looks like it has what you want. Or, you can make one yourself. Basically, it involves hooking up a mount so you can put an ordinary digital camera on the telescope. With fancier digital cameras you can even take long exposures (say, twenty or thirty seconds) to get better low-light photographs.
  7. Over the past few months, we've recognized that there's a need for SFN to have a clear and simple policy for moderators to follow while doing their jobs on the forums. After a bit of discussion, the policy has gone into effect. The key points of our new policy: Moderators shouldn't moderate in threads in which they are participating unless they're doing something like delete blatant spam. If a moderator is participating in a discussion and thinks there's a rule violation, he or she will simply report the post and ask for feedback from the rest of the staff. Only after discussion will action be taken. Reported posts take new importance. We've revamped the way reported posts work, making it easier for mods to see what needs to be checked on. If you report a post, it is almost guaranteed to be checked into by a moderator or two, so remember: if you think someone's breaking the rules, hit the Report button. We will look into it. Posts won't be deleted unless they're blatant spam or trolling. It's rather irritating to notice that your posts have vanished when you didn't think you did anything wrong. The goal is to increase fairness by involving more moderators in decisions. When posts are reported, they automatically appear as new threads in our Reported Posts forum, where any mod can weigh in and provide an opinion. We're transitioning to making more decisions through this method, so most infractions and warnings will be made only after several moderators or administrators agree on the appropriate action to take. And the prominence of reports when mods hit Get New Posts means reports should always be dealt with quickly. We hope this will make SFN a friendlier and better place for discussion. As always, if you have feedback on our moderation or any aspect of SFN, find a moderator or administrator and send them a PM.
  8. SFN's where I first started learning all sorts of new and interesting things. Just hang around, read discussions, and ask questions (we like questions) when you're confused about something. Wikipedia is often good at explaining the basics of things, although of course it then goes into incredible confusing details later on in the article. (You'd want to skip those bits.) The quality varies from article to article.
  9. I may have some time to lengthen the calculus GUT now that it's break time. I'll see if I can get some more of that done.
  10. [math]a=G\frac{m}{r^2}[/math] is the equation for free-fall acceleration due to gravity. It tells you what the acceleration would be given nothing in the way. If there is something in the way, it exerts a force on you to stop you.
  11. http://www.toarchive.org/ Apparently they've had domain name trouble and had to switch sites. The article you were looking for is here, and yeah, it looks like you're right.
  12. I'd be very happy if somebody would cite a legal source defining marriage in some way, because it's a waste of time to sit around arguing about who should be the one to do it.
  13. Welcome to SFN. I hope you enjoy the stimulating discussions we have to offer! It appears you've set your image as your profile picture rather than your avatar. The profile picture only appears when you look at your profile, rather than next to all your posts. Weird, I know, but that's vBulletin for you.
  14. Did they ever post answers to the previous set?
  15. Done. You'll need to remember to log in under the new name now.

  16. If you don't mind your title being "Formerly yourdadonapogos", sure.

  17. For some reason moderators (but not administrators) can see who left them reputation. I'm not entirely sure why. I may just turn that off.
  18. http://www.celemony.com/cms/index.php?id=dna I'd suggest finding something that can do a FFT spectrogram and running the music through it. I've used baudline before on Linux. However, if there are several instruments playing at once, the picture may be too "cloudy" for you to really tell what's happening.
  19. It's not some way to multiply. It increases phenotype diversity by trading genetic material and making new combinations of genes.
  20. I think he means that work is being done to decrease the radius of the circular path, not to keep it in the same path.
  21. I think you meant koalas instead of pandas.
  22. Do we really have to have this argument in a thread expressing good will to everyone? Merry Christmas, everyone.
  23. Only with some messy hacking of vB's JavaScript, I think.
  24. Kindness and goodwill? If you're giving positive reputation, what's the point in hiding it? So I adjusted the templates to break up userinfo into two lines (people with really long locations (mooeypoo) kept making it linebreak) and moved the reputation button to an "add" link next to reputation. Hopefully it's a little easier to discover. If I broke a template while doing so, tell me.
