  1. It does, in any case, make them more likely to be addicted if they do try another drug, according to the study. I suppose we'll have to wait for other studies on the same subject before running with the data though.
  2. International Phonetic Alphabet anybody?
  3. Esperanto anybody?
  4. Let's not. Switching to it would take so much effort it wouldn't be worth it - I could hardly read the phonetic parts of that article myself, because I had to switch between the styles and spellings. If there was a transition, it would suck until everyone got used to it.
  5. A recent study in rats shows that teenagers who use marijuana may be more vulnerable to heroin addiction later in life, substantiating claims that marijuana really is a "gateway" drug. The test gave six rats doses of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, every three days, equivalent to smoking about one joint every three days. After the trial period was over, catheters were inserted in those rats and the control group, and the rats were allowed to press a lever to deliver heroin into their system. Those who had previously used THC were found to use more heroin daily, as the researchers believe the THC use affected their brain chemistry and actually lowered their sensitivity to opioids - requiring them to use more heroin to get a high. http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn9488
  6. Don't know why that would happen, but I suppose it's a fairly rare situation anyways. There are mods for vB that automatically merge duplicate posts... would be a good thing to implement.
  7. Odd - I'm having the same problem (FF on Windows). I'll try removing some of the dupes and see what happens. edit: that seems to have fixed it... let's see if it happens again when there are more posts there.
  8. heh... only posts from the science forums show up on the front page. It's not just you
  9. Unless, of course, our missile-defense system (which is still in testing) fails, in which case he gets to stick his tongue out at us and laugh.
  10. The article states specifically that the drug would not be delivered by eating the tomato - it would be too difficult to regulate the amount of vaccine you receive that way.
  11. You can't go into geosynchronous orbit without lateral velocity, even if you were directly at the equator.
  12. Genetics researchers are developing a genetically modified tomato plant that produces fragments of HIV and Hepatitis B proteins during its growth, which can then be easily extracted and used as an oral vaccine for those diseases. The researchers hope the vaccine could be "grown" in the countries that need it most, where it could be then distributed in tablet form cheaply and efficiently. It is easier to make and use than an injected vaccine, and trials on mice have already found that feeding them the proteins will cause antibodies to build up in their immune systems. If it works out - as none of the 90 or so other potential HIV viruses have - it could possibly save millions of lives. http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=mg19125584.600
  13. SFN is now four years old! /me gets out the firecrackers
  14. It was only two. I sorted it. I take it you're using the Quick Reply system? Sometimes if the Javascript gets borked it can show you five posts when you only made one. (Quick Reply actually just adds your post on the end of the current page instead of reloading, so it doesn't actually know how many posts you actually made)
  15. Some can, some can't. I'd recommend doing some research first - for Ubuntu or Kubuntu, check out http://www.ubuntuforums.org first.
  16. I have a distinct feeling that this thread is going in circles, and likely will continue to do so.
  17. It's still extra weight. In the first launches, they had white paint over the foam layer, and that added several hundred pounds of weight to the tank. And that was just paint.
  18. padren: The space shuttle is not capable of reaching geosynchronous orbit. Only up to about 400 miles.
  19. You do a great imitation of it. Earlier in this thread you said: So you've changed your opinion rather greatly, it seems. Just like when people sue McDonalds because they spilled hot coffee on themselves. Yes, I understand what you are saying. That or you are guilty of changing your arguments throughout this thread to better refute what the rest of us say. Your arguments have changed rather greatly and I'm not sure I like that method of argument.
  20. Isn't self-censorship similar to being "politically correct?"
  21. If it is, you haven't really addressed swansont's post at all. Suppose I sit down on a bench in the middle of a park out in the open, and someone else sits down next to me and starts to smoke. Do I have to move to protect my health, or should they go to some "designated smoking section" of the park?
  22. That's hardly proof that QWERTY is slower, only that Barbara Blackburn is better at Dvorak.
  23. We've had people go back and edit every single post they made to say "blanked", and letting them delete their posts entirely would be even worse.
