  1. Use your analytical skills and memory more, and they'll keep working longer.
  2. A species wouldn't necessarily die without spikes or protection. It would just have a harder time of things, and then suddenly, it has self defense, and everything's a lot easier.
  3. No, it's just that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is punishing us for eliminating pirates by raising the temperatures.
  4. The fact that they use this quote: makes them less credible. Just because some truths pass through those stages (Einstein was not ridiculed or violently opposed) does not mean that if your opinion is ridiculed, you are right. Fallacy number one, right there, without the content even starting. Bad sign.
  5. He wants icons to be different in different workspaces, so one workspace has one set of icons for games, and another has internet browsing/IRC, etc.
  6. Not all people can be hypnotized, but it usually depends on how willing they are. If you're sitting there saying "you'll never hypnotize me", you probably won't get hypnotized unless they use drugs on you.
  7. Yes, it's quite possible. Just not to the extent that some people think it is. While under hypnosis, you can't get someone to do something they really don't want to do. You don't say "grab a knife and stab yourself" and they do it. Rather, you use suggestions to make them believe they are in a certain place or situation, so they will do certain things with less restraint.
  8. I would go into the future, get some fantastic technology, then come back to the present and patent it. Yes, I'm greedy, I know.
  9. Mosquitoes are attracted to CO2 because all mammals give it off, so it can be very handy to find food. We breathe out carbon dioxide, so the mosquitoes just have to spot it and come towards the source.
  10. I'm sure if you've ever inhaled something like sawdust or just any major cloud of dust, you'd experience something similar. Pepper is light and can make neat little clouds, so that probably makes it especially good for sneeze-triggering. Salt, for example, is heavier and doesn't float in the air easily, so it wouldn't make you sneeze.
  11. During research of lunar soil collected by Neil Armstrong in 1969, scientists have found startling new evidence that indicates that the Sun's composition is far different than we think. Originally, there were two theories about the Sun's composition, one suggesting it has a similar oxygen composition to the planets, while the other indicating that it has enriched levels of oxygen-16. But in fact, it appears that the Sun has lower levels of oxygen-16, exactly the opposite of what scientists expected. It just shows how much more we have to learn about our most important source of energy. http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200604/s1610398.htm
  12. I think it's just getting little bits of pepper up your nose that does the trick. The nerves in the nose recognize that there are foreign objects in there and trigger a sneeze to get them out.
  13. Americium. I'm unique.
  14. Or you could take an old airplane and add remote controls.
  15. As for #1, try this: http://www.hezardastan.org/breezy_xp_dualboot/en/ For #2, you can make XP the first item on the boot menu, but I don't know about any other options.
  16. Well, big bang theory has become "obselete" in a way. There are newer ideas, such as inflationary cosmology, that make more sense. In inflationary cosmology, you only need around 20 pounds of matter to form the entire universe, and that sounds a lot more reasonable. The way it works has been explained by me before here. Hope that helps.
  17. So? Forgotten about what fires can do? The towers were bathed in burning jet fuel. What would you expect it to do? "Unexplained" does not mean "conspiracy!!!!!!1!!" It means "needs investigation." And besides, the collapses started at the top of the tower, near where the planes hit. The buildings didn't implode as in a conventional building destruction, the top fell down on TOP of the rest and destroyed it. Jumping to conclusions.
  18. Quite probably, though I don't know how much would escape through the windows (and you're also exposing yourself to outside noise when you open the window).
  19. Indeed, but what matters is how much of it reaches your ears. If it seems just as loud (because you turned it up) then you're compensating for those that escape and providing the same amount of sound to your ears.
  20. My typical advice for this sort of situation is simply "wait and see what he's like, and then go from there." If the person turns out to be a complete idiot, then you should stay away, but you may find out that they really are a nice person. The best way is simply to wait and see.
  21. Ah, well, I guess I should have done a bit of research then. I have fluorescent lights as most of my built-in ceiling lights, as otherwise lighting would take a kilowatt in just one of the rooms (12 lights, 100 watts).
  22. This sounds suspiciously like homework to me, in which case it belongs in the Homework Help forum. There are many, many terminal illnesses, so you'll have to be more specific to get an answer.
  23. What pink_trike says is rather apparent, so I'm going to close this. Nevermore, just be a bit more careful when you post things like this. And what skye says is true: if you think something is spam, please click the button in the post so we moderators can see it sooner.
  24. Once the price of LEDs go down, I think they'll really begin to take off for conventional lighting, and even things like headlights. They're efficient and they don't burn out quickly. Great combination. (And yes, I was the one who approved this thread... slight title change and it was perfect! Thanks for posting!)
  25. It uses the I'm Feeling Lucky result of a Google search and sends you there. SFN, being first for a search for "science forums," works perfectly.
