  1. A new procedure dubbed "closed-heart" surgery is revolutionizing the way patients get new heart valves. Rather than cracking the rib cage open to insert the new valves, doctors are now simply making a two-inch incision and threading a new valve in by wire. The procedure can even be done while the heart is still beating, and allows patients to get out of the hospital faster. However, at this point, the procedure will only be used for those deemed too sick to receive traditional heart surgery, as it has only been performed on 150 patients and is not "proven" quite yet. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060401/ap_on_he_me/easier_heart_valves
  2. If you have ideas for what you'd like it to look like, you might as well post them here. Personally, I think the sidebar needs rejigerring (the navigational links don't look good--smaller font size?) and the news needs to be first rather than active topics. And the news items need a different style to them, I think.
  3. Lexan is not something you get as bottled water. It's a container that you can put water in and take around, as it's a bit more expensive then regular plastic. i.e. you could take it on a hiking trip with you. insane_alien, there are problems with plastics leaching into water in bottles.
  4. Hopefully. The main page really needs a major change at the moment.
  5. I don't know about your acronyms, but Lexan plastic is the best for storing a liquid. It's also nearly unbreakable.
  6. That's [math]A_\phi= \tfrac{2}{3}[/math] And you can hit Preview Post to see how it will turn out.
  7. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Scroll down, see Virtual Desktop Manager.
  8. Ah, I see. I've had that before. It takes a few days before it really kicks in.
  9. Asthma can make it difficult to breathe all of the time, some of the time, or only when you excercise or have an allergic reaction. It's very irritating. It's quite possible that what you have is asthma. Many asthmatics never have an "attack" at all (like me).
  10. [math]q=\left(\frac{q0}{1-v^2/c^2}\right)^{.5}[/math] Click on the image to see how I did it. There's also a tutorial so you can use LaTeX--it makes understanding posts so much easier.
  11. Nearly four million Americans - and perhaps one million more, illegally - take medications for ADHD, and the number is rising. But now doctors are worrying that ADHD is widely misdiagnosed, and several serious side effects of the medications are concerning them further. According to reports, several major ADHD drugs are causing hallucinations in up to 5% of children taking them, a substantial number. This worries the doctors, as the drugs are also being prescribed without major consultation - many family doctors prescribe them based on just a few minutes of discussion with the parents. It appears that ADHD diagnoses need a major reconsideration. http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=mg19025452.700

  13. You didn't read the article well. It takes longer to get places in the tubes, but you use tiny amounts of fuel.
  14. No, not really. Let's suppose I was to radically change your DNA right now. For the moment, absolutely nothing would happen. Even when the cells did reproduce, you couldn't radically change--arms won't sprout out of you magically, you won't suddenly have a desire to bite people, etc. You can't make someone grow an arm or tentacles or fangs at will. You'll just have very major problems with your body's functions.
  15. I believe you meant 180 degrees there.
  16. The link to the guide points to http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/somewhere rather than an actual guide.
  17. Just a note to woelen, we do have chemistry LaTeX: [ce]ClO3- + 6H+ + 5Cl- -> 3Cl2 + 3H2O[/ce]
  18. By being integrated into Windows and being clever.
  19. Perhaps you would realize that he isn't the one making the laws, Congress does that. He only decides if they should be implemented, and he hasn't vetoed anything yet.
  20. If the universe is infinitely large, we have to assume there will be a planet similar to Earth with animals similarly evolved.
  21. I happen to be rather fond of my ability to remember random facts for years after I learn them. Comes in handy sometimes.
  22. Go to the local apothecary and get a dram of poison for forty ducats or so. (Romeo and Juliet moment) Seriously, though, I suggest you wait it out. And I also suggest you don't go to a public forum with your problems. Other friends are your best bet for advice.
  23. This has been answered nearly two years ago: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4451
  24. Right. The headers you send are controlled by your computer only.
