  1. MiMeTeX would work perfectly. It doesn't require extra software, it's just a CGI that you drop in your cgi-bin folder.
  2. Why not just use LaTeX or MiMeTeX?
  3. Bah. I programmed my calculator for ages, including some games. It was especially useful when I programmed it to do certain difficult problems, and show its work. It was permitted. If you're using a TI, I can direct you in the right area to get started.
  4. I originally said people were afraid of misuse, and you made it look like said scenario wasn't misuse, but something else. That's not quite what the purpose of a camera is. It is there mainly for deterrence (like a real police officer) but also to help arrest people once a crime is commited. Frankly, if you see a crime on camera, that's just as good as seeing it in person, legally--you need to take action. It's like saying "You didn't ask" when someone asks you why you didn't mention you were a leper before you married them. We don't have all that much restriction on writing either, and it can be libelous and misused.
  5. That doesn't qualify as "misuse"? This would be part of the regulations necessary. And, of course, if police uncover something unrelated to the crime they are supposed to be investigating, they don't ignore it, do they? You can't just say "I wasn't looking for it, so I won't convict you." They reduce the amount of time in the yellow light, which means that as people try to get through the intersection during the yellow light, it turns red for them more often and they get caught for running the red light. It's no different then a regular policemen's eyes.
  6. I'd prefer the police officer myself. Cameras are no good at giving directions. On a more serious note, I think it is more of the paranoia that the government will misuse the cameras. For example, people don't like red-light cameras (even though it's just enforcing the law) because sometimes the government shortens the yellow light to increase revenue. For people to feel safe with cameras, you'd have to introduce a set of rules and regulations to prevent their misuse, and that means more beaurocracy.
  7. And a sperm whale may have a brain as large as our body, but you never see a "sWhale" on SFN, do you? (Of course, internet usage is not necessarily "highly evolved" so much as "well adapted to the tools of the trade")
  8. Is travel necessary to sign this NDA? Living in Texas would make things harder. I would apply otherwise. (Not sure if my PHP skills are quite that good, but I produced a wiki software with them...) And I'll point out that SFN is actually hosted by PowerVPS, not VintageHost.
  9. Many people on this forum would tell you that an IQ test is worthless. http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2615 http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5090 iqtest.com would be decent. I tried.
  10. No. Adding pressure makes it warmer. You have to add pressure and dissapate heat at the same time.
  11. Sure it will take off. Remember that the ground and the wheels have no effect on the plane's lift. You may begin to move forward at 140mph, and the ground will move backwards--but unless you have pathetic bearings in your wheels, the plane will keep moving forwards. edit: see padren's post below, he's right too, and he covers it better
  12. My handheld GPS unit has no compass, and simply determines your direction by your movement. It takes a while for it to realize that you're moving, but it's accurate after that. It won't recognize if you just turn around without moving from one spot. Best way to find out is to grab it and turn around.
  13. I think both of those are the same book, so that doesn't really matter. Compare page numbers and such in the detailed listing to see if they're different. I'd also recommend The Fabric of the Cosmos.
  14. Just as a note, the reason viruses are not considered alive is because of their lack of homeostasis, not their lack of a nucleus. You don't need to argue about that any more.
  15. The img tag IS enabled. And the bubble BBCode is not allowed anywhere but the General Discussion forum.
  16. I find that the little screws on light switches are nice, as they are connected to the grounded part of the circuit. Mainly from personal experience in a low-humidity home, zapping myself.
  17. I think the other thing the internet lacks is homeostasis. It changes constantly rather than staying constant and reacting to external forces in a way that keeps it the same. Rather, it changes due to many different things.
  18. There is a sticky in this forum for questions like this. In case you didn't notice. Anyways, I don't think economics has all that much discussion going on here, so it really wouldn't be necessary. If you want, start a few discussions, and if people are interested in economics, then it may be done.
  19. PCI is an interface for extra things (like a wireless card) to interact with your computer. USB is a plug, the little ones on the back of your laptop that you plug a joystick into.
  20. No.
  21. Hah. It's 73 degrees right now. No clouds that I can see.
  22. Ubuntu's goal is to fit on 1 CD, so they aren't likely to add extra software to it. Just how hard is it to configure the colors and theme of Ubuntu? I don't like the brown all that much. (Not that the XP theme looks all that great either, but at least it's bright)
  23. I'm planning on using it for the Internet, which is what I spend most of my time on. And I do have a network drive that I can back up to, so I'm not worried about losing data (though it would be a pain).
  24. I'm considering installing Linux on my desktop computer at the moment--Ubuntu if possible. Now, the question is, what will I get out of it that XP doesn't have? I have a few pros from the LiveCD already: Lower memory usage--I was using 1/2 as much as WinXP. sudo apt-get update vs. going to various websites to find if my software has a security hole and needs to be updated. Security (though getting WPA set up may be annoying...) Free (duh!) I'd just like to know what else is worth getting, to see if I should back up and install or just stick with toying with the LiveCD. Remember that this computer will also be used by "laymen," as you could call them, so terminals aren't the best thing.
  25. Things seem to be getting better for the moment.
