  1. Awesome, thank you very much!
  2. Great, thanks! It's really interesting
  3. I know RNA is considerbaly less stable - I was just wondering why. the OH groups are a source of instability I hadn't considered, thanks!
  4. Yes I was planning to use catalase - as a Biochemist I specifically chose this project for the enzyme content as I'm confident enough to be able to use enzyme theory in the project and there's quite a lot of potential for extension with enzyme inhibition. Thanks for the heads-up about rate equations! I appreciate it.
  5. I was wondering whether the presence of the methyl group on thymine vs uracil has any bearing on the relative stability of DNA vs RNA. Any thoughts?
  6. Not one hundred percent sure this is in the right forum, as whilst this is a project and I am technically an amateur scientist, this is the Individual Investigation for 15% of my final Chemistry A-level grade. I am doing a project on the rate of decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide, using different methods of measuring the rate and changing various aspects of the experiment such as temperature, ph and various concentrations. The theory I am looking at including is: -enzyme theory -catalysis theory -rate theory does anyone have any advice of other aspects to look at, or particular methods related to this which could be useful? Any information on theoretical background to the reaction or any of the aspects noted above would also be greatly appreciated. I don't want definitive answers, and I am not going to plagiarise anyone's work. I'm just looking for some advice/guidance. Thanks in advance, SHA
  7. Brilliant, thank you so much for your prompt reply!
  8. In Chemistry today we did a practical to determine the amount of Iron(II) in dried thyme. Partway through the experiment method, it instructed us to put some of a solution of Sulphuric acid (1moldm^-3) and thyme into a plastic beaker. It struck me as odd that the method specified the material, as it's not something I've come across in the two years of the course. I wondered whether there was any basis for material specification in this case, or whether glass versus plastic is arbitrary. Are there any circumstances in which plastic only should be used versus glass, or vice versa?
  9. As a subsidiary to this question (if you don't mind me piggybacking) can somebody explain which cells are myelinated, and why those that aren't myelinated aren't myelinated?
  10. Why do buses not turn up when they're supposed to?

Not enough data to be certain, but probably due to being late.

Would need more data to rule out being too early though.

  11. The lowest temperature ever recorded at the surface of the Earth was −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F; 184 K) at the Russian Vostok Station in Antarctica, on July 21, 1983. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coldest_temperature_recorded_on_Earth
  12. thanks so much!
  13. Hey, I'm SHA, a 6th form student in the UK, and I've been a science addict for over ten years. My teacher sent me here. Little did he know what havoc that would cause and how it would contrbute to my plans for world domination >3
  14. Thank God for summer!

  15. I think the comparison with the Cuban missile crisis is very apt. I don't consider it cowardice to avoid the threat - where do you then draw the line? There are examples in military history where threats have been ignored and carnage has ensued, and the effects of a nuclear weapon, successful or otherwise, will be farreaching, and affect more than just those directly involved.
  16. Thank you so much, that was a great explanation, and I really appreciate you taking the time to provide it!
  17. I was just wondering whether anyone could explain what causes Heterochromia? I've recently started listening to Rise Against, and their singer has one brown eye and one blue. I don't know if this is the right forum, but I was hoping someone could furnish me with an explanation of the genetics behind it. Thanks in advance!
