Essentially, you are blaming the media for Donald's election, which simply isn't true because his election wasn't that simple. There were more compelling factors such as apathy among young and minority voters, as well as, votes against Hillary because, simply, those people disliked her more than Donald. Before Donald's election, his lies and promises were merely words and, admittedly, some people are not always swayed to action by words as this past election seems to clearly illustrate. What I am say is now Trump's words have real physical/material impact and are becoming reprehensible acts of law, which the previously apathetic voter may now better perceive and comprehend. Those American voters who ignored Trump's lies, didn't believe they were lies, or who stood on the sideline and let him be elected to the presidency, may now understand the costs of their error. Continual reporting on Trump's false claims isn't just about what's happening now, it's about the future of our country and future elections. Although citing Trump as a liar may not have had the impact many of us felt it should, that doesn't mean doing so didn't have impact and won't on future elections--particularly as the negative effects of Donald's edicts accumulate under his administration.

I am not aware of any occasion where Trump's alternative facts have silenced, supplanted, or distracted public attention or opinion away from coverage of other efforts some consider legitimate news or more news worthy. It's important that the media continues as it has because it does influence public opinion, which could have an affect on future policies and elections. Furthermore, the idea that the president of the United States tweets aren't news or news worthy is absolutely ludicrous; he is the supposed leader of the free world, isn't he? If not for any other reason, markets, economies, and social policies around the world sway on his every utterance and we should all shout that "the emperor has no clothes" whenever he speaks--or tweets.

And yet more evidence of where this administration's appointments are leading this nation. With his appointment of Steve Bannon to his National Security Counsel, Trump appears to be strengthening his shameful support for extreme-rightist policies.

Again, I disagree; continuous reporting of this administration's lies didn't and hasn't turn those lies into truths or made them anymore acceptable to the American people other than his staunchest supporters. Protests have grown here and around the world almost daily. The GOP leadership in both houses and certain senior GOP legislators have publicly denied Trump's false claims as well they should have. Prior to his election, Trump's alternative facts did not have the impact of law as they may do now with him as president, which is why the chorus of media citing Donald's lies should grow and not cease. Lying isn't unusual for any politician, American or otherwise; however, this American politician (Trump) has the force of the presidency behind his lies and all the power that infers. We cannot afford to let his penchant for alternative facts to fade like so much background noise. The media and the American people should continue to publicize and protest his lies until this administration and its political supporters in congress are eventually voted out of office.

It seems this administration's immigration policies don't extend to certain Islamic nations--including some with whom Trump has had business interests--that have actually produced terrorists who have reached our shores. Evidence, perhaps, that Trump won't act against his business interests regardless of the threat he perceives to our national security.

Dreams Could Be Hallucinations
DrmDoc replied to IsaacAsimov's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
What you are describing is called lucid dreaming, which is also a type of dreaming that occurs unconsciously. When you have this experience, you are indeed not aware (unconscious) of your true sensory experiences within your sleep environment while asleep--you are indeed unconscious of the true physical/material nature of your sleep environment although you may be aware of being within a dream. -
Neuroscience of Creativity
DrmDoc replied to Polednice's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
You seem to be equating creativity solely with synaptic plasticity, which isn't true. Creativity is a product of overall brain function and involves a confluence of both micro and macro elements. Rather than neuregulin 1, synaptic plasticity is most dependent on postsynaptic calcium release; however, neuregulin 1 interaction with ErbB4 is implicated in schizophrenia when its inhibitory effects are disrupted. -
Dreams Could Be Hallucinations
DrmDoc replied to IsaacAsimov's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
Forgive my directness, but you're wrong. Perhaps you misunderstand the nature of unconscious experience relative to conscious experience. Dreaming is an experience that occurs amid the cessation of conscious sensory experience and when we dream, we are unconscious. True dreams are mental experiences that arise from unconscious metabolic processes in the brain that occur amid the sleep process. Our memory of dreams is how our waking-state brain interprets the residual effects of those metabolic processes occurring in the brain amid sleep. -
Reporting this administration's lies doesn't make them popular, its makes the lies known to the American public and to the world. Regardless of what some may think, reporting isn't promotion; it's an opportunity to expose significant issues to the light of truth. What we do with that truth may not stop the lies but truth is essential to our individual ability to make the right decisions about our country's leadership. Not reporting this administration's alternative facts and moronic efforts will merely create an environment where those lies and efforts will grow unchallenged as truths we might all accept.

Dreams Could Be Hallucinations
DrmDoc replied to IsaacAsimov's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
SJ is right; hallucinations are conscious perceptual interpretations of external experiences that do not reflect true external sensory experience. Dreams are unconscious experiences that arise from metabolic activations in the brain amid sleep, which are then synthesized by the brain as perceptual experiences. -
What you appear to be advocating is what's called in baseball, "Taking your eye off the ball", which I'm against. In doing so--not reporting every pitch Donald makes--we risk being socially, environmentally and economically struck and damaged by his administration's moronic policies and efforts. Ultimately, we risk losing significant gains and freedoms too many have sacrificed their lives to achieve (e.g., civil rights, voting rights, environmental protection, conservation, legal abortions, etc.).

Dreams Could Be Hallucinations
DrmDoc replied to IsaacAsimov's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
Indeed, dreaming isn't related to schizophrenia; however, schizophrenics do suffer certain sleep disorders. My comments comparing the dreaming brain to the brain in schizophrenia regards certain functional equivalents with the most prominent being hypofrontality--albeit transient amid normal dream sleep. -
If it weren't for the media's reporting of every Trump tongue fumble and misstep, there would be no protests or outrage in America's streets or around the world. He didn't win because of his press coverage, he won because too many of us either didn't believe his election possible, believed his alternative facts, or just didn't care. The absence of press would merely serve this administrations apparent efforts to keep the world and the American people ignorant and uninformed.

A 20% tariff passed on to American consumers means that we, not Mexico, would still be paying for Trump's stupid, stupid wall.
-
I disagree; Trump's feet should be held to the fire for every infraction and a free press has to be there to report them to the American people. If reporters start walking-out, what would remain is exactly what Trump's backwards policies need to succeed--silence on behalf of the people.

Suggestion about the Speculations forum

Isn't there a rule here regarding civility? If not, there should be. -
Russia's parliament has voted to decriminalize domestic violence by an overwhelming margin. The vote decriminalizes instances that do not cause "substantial bodily harm" and do not exceed once per year. My condolences to the women and future victims of this reprehensible vote.

I agree, his apparent efforts to dismantle and muzzle government agencies charged with protecting the health and welfare of our citizenry, environment, and economy is accumulating daily. The next horror would likely be his Supreme Court selection--I cringe at the thought.
-
I though we might list here and discuss the proliferation of alternative facts, broken promises, and the selection of predators as guardians of our country and economy's trust under Trump's administration. Although evidence has been accumulating since January 20th, the latest appears to be Trump's selection of for labor secretary, Andrew Puzder. Puzder's outsourcing of jobs and advocating robots as replacements for workers demanding wage increases provide more evidence of how Trump's doesn't particularly care about the American worker or adhering to his promises to put them first. Although unlikely, a convincing preponderance of evidence might sway his supporters in this forum to reason.

I disagree; in America, parents are legally required to submit their children for medical treatment where serious health issues are involved. For example, a parent that choses prayer over established medical treatments for a sick child could be subject to penalties that include having the child removed from their homes or having their parental rights restricted. Under our legal system, parents can be compelled to submit their children for required medical care which, under every reasonable circumstance, is morally, ethically, and legally right.

I selected your links, review them, and, as Phi for All commented, you appear to be deliberately "obfuscating" or altering a truth to fit your views. Nothing in your link related to any Nigerian acts against Mr. Obama, those Greek protest regarded American policies years before Obama's administration, and your links provided no evidence of a world-wide recession caused by the Obama administration. Clearly, your links do not support your alternative facts.

I presume you understand the nature of Totalitarianism? Unwarranted arrests of journalists and censorship of government reporting are well recognized symptoms of an emerging Totalitarian regime. The action of capitol police on inaugural day and censorship of information are rightist efforts emboldened under this administration that you most certainly would have railed against under the previous administration. If you do understand Totalitarianism and you understand how vital a free press and access to information is to our democracy, then you should be concerned. Additionally, closing our borders (e.g., building a wall, banning immigration, restricting international commerce, etc.) and reopening black sites that permit the torture of prisoners are further indications that our government is quickly approaching the wrong side of freedom.
-
Arrest of journalists and Trump's ban on reports by government agencies to media, yet more evidence of how quickly our country is goose-stepping towards Totalitarianism under this administration.

Huh? Thrown out of Nigeria, fire bombed in Greece, insulted by half the world, and forced the world-wide recession by printing money? Our recession began in force under a Republican administration and ended under Obama's leadership. Our economy and standing in the world are better now than they were 8 years ago--these are just some of those facts that you and others are trying to alter to fit your views. Maybe you can help me understand Ike's address...where is his caution of government in support of science? I don't see where he expressed fear of support for science potentially leading to more government or government bias.
