  1. The winds are not going to be bad as the flooding. New Orleans was built 9' below sea level and has levees from 10 to 15 feet. A storm surge is expected of around 25 feet. I wont be surprised if New Orleans is gone after after the hurricane.
  2. I agree. I have no doubt that it is indeed dust. It can be harmful if it clogs any heat sinks though. I have hat my cpu heat sink completely filled with dust. The fan wasn't clogged but it was useless on top of the sink because it was essentially blowing on a wall of dust rather than the sink. I couldn't do anything resource intensive until I figured it out the cpu would just shut off as it overheated. There wasn't any permanent damage though, I just cleaned it out with a can of compressed air and blew dust all over the house. Keep in mind the your computer's fans pumps lots and lots of air through the computer. Even if the air has a very slight amount of dust in it, it will accumulate in the computer over time. The clock on top of your fireplace mantle doesn't have air pumped through it so its no surprise that the nature of the settled dust would be very different. I would expect that the accumulated dust in a computer would be much more sticky because some of the other dust cant cling to the components.

    voluntary work

I wouldn't work. If everything was free I would spend all my time perusing personal pleasure. Although I am pretty selfish, I must say that I find any body's answer who says otherwise a bit suspect. It is much easier to say you're not selfish than it is to not be selfish when the situation arises.
  4. I would prefer somebody to say "I think" rather than "I know" when the person is not 100% sure.
  5. I can't think of anything remotely dangerous from a PSU. If it did come from the PSU than I doubt its going to work again anyway.
  6. There has been worse. Multiple whales have been blown up in history after somebody had the bright idea that burying TNT under and proceeding to detonate a whale was the sensible way to remove the public eye-sore that is a whale carcass. It is really rather strange that people don't look at the results of other people's bright ideas before executing the said idea again. Either that or they do look at the result and somehow convince themselves that the result would be different when they do it themselves. I suppose thats human nature. On a somewhat irrelevant but still related note, I have been told that one of the definitions of insanity is repeating the same action over many times only to have the same result each time and yet still expect the result to change. Of course it can also be said that this is the definition of persistence as well. Darn it, will somebody poke me the next time I go well off the subject?

    Polygamy

But if everybody is having sex with all their freinds all the time wouldn't life just become one big orgy? I'm not really complaining but it just seems a little odd in comparison with my life where nobody has sex with me any time.

  13. You're trying to break a few laws of physics. It won't work.
  14. 1. I'm pretty sure there are regulations in the US concerning labs and residential areas. 2. Chemical suppliers will NOT ship to residential addresses.
  15. Despite claims this is quite a common phenomenon. It is called "liberal trickery" and happens when a person with a high capacity for evil rubs some of his evil off onto a person with a somewhat lower capacity for evil. The person on the receiving end of the liberal trickery experiences a liberal overload and releases the evil through the shown process.
  16. Why didn't I think of that first? Oh wait....
  17. Any person who is not a US citizen is outside of the FBI's jurisdiction. Edit: after doing a bit of research I'm not so sure about the above comment. It seems I was thinking of the CIA's jurisdiction which does NOT include US citizens; if the CIA finds that a US citizen is suspect the report must either be thrown out or sent to the FBI. I'm not sure if it works the other way around.

I realize that but there was no commentary in the opening post. It was just a quote from some other website. If you had pointed something out from the quote it wouldn't have looked as if you were just slinging mud. Or rather it wouldn't have looked like you had dumped a bucket of mud on sfn's porch then ran off laughing.
  19. It's not. It just has a higher capacity. 9v batteries would be lousy for this job because they are made for very small loads over long periods. Your circuit is going to be drawing high-ish current for short amounts of time. The voltage of your battery should match the voltage rating for the bulb or buzzer.
  20. But my point is that railgun is to easy as Pluto is to warm and cozy. A coilgun is about 1.63x10^1337 times easier. A coilgun is also about equally more forgiving. Even some of the most efficient and powerful railguns do little more than than shoot bursts of plasma. The ratio of work:gratification is way higher for coilguns. There is also a massive drop in efficiency at lower powers for railguns which is why they don't scale down very well. Keep in mind that the amount of power you're playing with is tiny when speaking of electromagnetic acceleration. The mechanics for a coilgun and railgun are completely different. You cant just convert one to the other.
  21. Trust me on this, if you want a decent rail gun you're not going to be building it with flash caps. Yes, you can. It won't be fast though.

  23. The insulation is pointless for two reasons: 1)9 volts is not enough voltage to overcome the resistance in the human body for any measurable current to flow. 2)A 9v battery is DC and you would need to touch both the positive and the negative terminal for current to flow. Also, I would switch the bulb for a buzzer. If you're using a bulb and the ring just grazes the hanger without a good connection the bulb will not visibly light. With a buzzer this will still be slightly audible. I would personally go with a more interesting project and aim for a higher grade.
  24. All I have to say is... WTF?!
