We had a small hive (2 of those unit thingies) and we walked around it all the time and they never stung us, one stung my dad once, but never any of us. They all died last summer I'm not quite sure why, something to do with hornets I think.

When you attack someone's politically beliefs it may not be such a big deal, people are provided the right to disagree with the government in many countries. However, when you attack someone's personal religious beliefs that have been instilled in them since they were children and is their way of life, I can see how that may become a big deal.

Questions about Darwinism.
-Demosthenes- replied to simple's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
I always thought that most genetic variation came from sexual reproduction, things like cross over and random changes in genetic material when it is reproduced. I have to admit my knowledge gets a little fuzy at this point. Can't new traits come about from merely new combinations of genes, or does mutation happen more often? -
how did life begin?
-Demosthenes- replied to computerages's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Cute. Prebiotic matter is not organic, it's mostly methane, ammonia, hydrogen, and water, non of this is "alive" in any sense. So these foreign objects (comets, ect.) contributed chemicals ("prebiotic matter") rather than life. Which brings us back to this point: I agree. "We" as in life, could be used as evidence for any opposing theory as well, as long as it's end result is life ("us"). I admit I haven't dedicated my life comparing the theories and the mechanics of the theories involved, but I believe that I have sufficient information to have an educated opinion. Could you please explain these? -

I suppose, although evolution does not require mutaion per se. Macro-evolution where it involves speciation would need some sort of mutation, but micro hardly ever involves mutation. -

how did life begin?
-Demosthenes- replied to computerages's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
I see very little evidence for life developing on other planets and then "seeding" this one. First, it is no more likely that another planet will develop life rather than ours. Second, there are no planets that have been seen to have had life remotely near us. It just seems much more likely that life started on this planet rather than on another and then somehow got caught on a comet (hmm) and then somehow made it to a hospitable plantet (passed jupiter) and somehow did not burn up in the atmosphere and lived it lived through the whole ordeal without leaving a trace of evidence anywhere. Sounds like view from someone who is trying to reconcile two different beliefs, which is not good science. -

Not by us, but technically it had to happen for there to be any life at all. -

Even if that were true than it would have still had to start somewhere, life would have had to be started somewhere eventually. -
There were originally allowed, but usually the system will filter out un-wanted riders even on a wanted bill. There have been presidents who have vetoed bills because of riders, and usually the bill goes back and passes without it, even though they don't need the president's signature anymore. There was a line-veto (is that what it was called?) once, but it was thrown out because it was too unconstituional because it gave to much power to the executive branch. It was a clever way to deal with riders, but it wasn't quite right.

But, of course there is definitely a difference. I would venture so far to say that life is very difficult to be made from abiotic matter. -
Heavens no, I'd go with a 83+ (or a silver 84) any day.

A shuffle, I like my mp3 really small. But if I could get it in a color I would get pink

Sweet, I got an ipod.

That's what I thought I was looking for, weather I should or not. I think I know.

Nope, just sick and don't want to go the doctor. I was actually looking for medical advice, I didn't want anyone to decide for me

evolution of humans and animals
-Demosthenes- replied to qwerty's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Or they could simply be wiped out and another species can evolve to take it's place. Why aren't they evolving to be smarter like us?? Why would they, we (humans) already have the "higer-cognitive" niche. Of course they are still evolving, but only to better fit there own niche, if some related specied goes extinct then part of their population might evolve to it, but that's about it. They do have a very fast motabolism, but this is largely dedicated to flight. -
You read me well I remember when I used to get streap thoat all the time, each time I would have to get a shot. Yes my limphnoids? (I think, the ones in my neck) are swollen, exept I have phlegm and a slight caugh.
-
My mother wants me to go to the doctor, but I don't think so. I( woke up yesterday with a hurting thoat and a small caough, but it wasn't too bad so I went to school. But then today I had a really sore throat. I have a history of strep thoat, my little sister has been sick, and my auny (who we recently visited for the day) is sick and had to take anti-biotics. But it's been weirdly cold, so the heater is on and the air in the house is drier, so maybe it's just dry. And I have no fever, only a small caugh and a horribly sore thoat.

Am I the the only one who feels very uncomfortable??

Evidence of Evolution
-Demosthenes- replied to -Demosthenes-'s topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Okay, I think there might be a need for a second installment of Demo's Evolution Hour. There seems to be some problems with how species evolve into other species and such. Well usual it doesn't go like that anyway. When a niche becomes open (ex dinosaurs die out) then other organisms evolve into these unused niches (the evolution of mammals after dinosaurs died out). It is common to find whole groups of these mammals that are evolved from the same creature, such as the "bear-dog" and has been connected using fossils to the dog, cat, raccoon, bear, and other mammals. Well, how does this happen? How can an animal without wings somehow evolve into something that can fly?? A large part of this is mutation. Mutation A lot of people think that all mutations are bad, and in the individual sense they usually always are. For populations it is a different thing, first you have to understand the scope of time, millions and billions of years for a positive mutation to occur. Mutation can bring new alleles (or the genetic material that is responsible for traits) into the population, giving evolution the raw material to work with. If the mutation works then Natural Selection will work on it (the ones in the population with the positive mutation will live and reproduce more often than those who don't) until this positive mutation becomes more common. How? Mutation is caused sometimes by "copying errors" in genetic material during cell division and sometimes by exposure to radiation, chemicals, or viruses, these are called Mutagens. -
I'm pretty sure that dave was a mod when I joined last year.

Where is this extraterestrial ecology??

Evidence of Evolution

Whatever, I guess the thread can go where ever it wants. It's life from non-life. Amino acids have been formed using non-organic matter from conditions similar to premordial earth (I beleive in the 1950's by a college student and it has been recreated be NASA and others), but in no way was life made from abiotic matter (non-living matter) in an experiment, although it is the most likely way (scientifically) that life got to earth.
