  1. You swirl anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern. Only Joking - I'll get my coat.

  3. Academia Obscura tweeted this today -- [mp][/mp]Just realised with a sense of joy that some of our more callow readers will not recognize Clippy. There is progress after all
  4. In my experience one screwed up footnote, one forgotten reference etc all will out-weigh the choice of font. Personally I used the formatting of the journal that my supervisors founded and were on the ed. board of - presuming that they might have had some input to the choices at some stage. Just to annoy I think I will put this in comic sans - but I do love the idea of using wingdings
  5. Scots Law may be different though.* "That's it Officers - you can move in now" * Homicide is the one thing I can actually remember a difference between England/Wales/NI and Scotland - the famous Scots verdict of Murder Not Proven
  6. Great post - and very honest. But I will point out that it is not universal. It is very rare that I even think of myself smoking and cannot remember the last day I actually wanted one
  7. You do realise that a real world lightning strike has abut as much energy as a couple of barrels of crude oil? The United States alone uses 20 million barrels a day.
  8. I have a horrible feeling that some folk might use the phrase Classical Science to refer to the science of Ancient Rome and Greece. Lots of what was done in Ancient Rome and Greece was more philosophy than science (ie no real link to reality - no empiricism) but then there were also amazing feats of science such Aristarchus (Heliocentric Model) , Erathosthenes (Earth's Axial tilt and radius) Pliny Snr (Naturalist) etc.
  9. I agree about the application - by the set up is correct and the basis of the inequality that is the foundation of Bell's work. 1. An object can have (or not ) three independent characteristics A, B, & C 2. We can denote these as A or A' , B or B' , C or C' 3. Each object can therefore be shown as - for example AB'C which has A, doesn't have B and has C What Bell rediscovered was that various inequalities exist when you sample basis one, two or three of these characteristics AB' + A'B + AC' + A'C + BC' + B'C <= 2 This is the important one. Which with a genius like Bells can be shown to be useful in distinguishing between two regimes of physics. If there were Hidden Variables then the measurements done by people like Aspect would be derived from a single joint distribution and MUST follow Bell's inequalities. But they do not
  10. Bell's inequality (it was also formed in a different manner by Wigner) is technically pure probability and not particularly hard - Bell's Theorem is a way to test between Local Hidden Variables and Spooky Action at a Distance by using this inequality when a set of marginal probability distributions is derived from a single joint distribution.
  11. How? I cannot think of a legal path other than getting a few doctors to sign off on a sectioning. But the courts would not want that precedent as the legel definition of madness as a defence is very very narrow and would most certainly not cover most people who are planning to murder someone. IPP/Dangerous individual in UK/Canada only applies to already convicted felons - and has already be changed in the UK. Otherwise most of the legislation is lock up pending charge/trial - and the question would be trial for what. Obviously if you are held under the non-jurisdiction of guantanamo then all argument is moot - but that is anomalous and highly criticised. The UK anti-terror legislation is also pretty draconian but not sure there is a way through that. If you were planning a joint enterprise then it would be easy - but just one guy - I don't see how.
  12. OK Transcriptions 7 Sept 2016 Not much has happened so far today - but I did go to Tescos for some fruit and groceries. Queued up as per normal and walked straight past Summer who is a check-out worker who is very friendly. She called me back and complained that everyone was ignoring her. She chided me for forgetting my clubcard. She was writing a greetings card in red/purple ink. 19 Sept 2016 On my way to work I popped into Tesoco to pick up some groceries. At checkout I walked to a free till but was called back by a women I know called Summer. She joked that everyone was ignoring her. She was writing a greetings card in purple-ish ink. ==== Forgot the club card - but then I always do
  13. I would hazard that barring tidal effects that locally there is no noticeable / measureable effect. Accelerometers measure zero in freefall - ie they measure acceleration relative to freefall and that would always be zero.
  14. I was shortening / alluding to "part of the normal course of events in such circumstances"
  15. I think your method might be a bit askew. I have done the sums and I come up with an angle of 25.24 for Aarhus. Will post diagram and method when I have a moment Radius of Earth 6360km Altitude of Satelite 35775km Latitude Salelittle -0.75degrees Aarhus +56.15degrees On diagram A = Aarhus C= Centre of Earth S = Satelite M = Point on line from Centre of Earth to Satelite where it crosses tangent from Aarhus The circle is the earth and the horizontal line running all across page is the equator === Not sure if there is an easier way to do this - or if I have mucked up; but the answer seems right
  16. A clock measures the total elapsed time whereas a metronome merely ticks. A ruler measures length at one moment in time whereas a odometer measures total moved distance. You have to compare like to like; ruler / metronome for instant measurement or odometer / clock for total integrated measurement
  17. Actually I have heard that flung at Mrs Clinton as well - but then powerful women immediately get all sorts of innuendos about their sexuality as part of the course
  18. ! Moderator Note According to our rules you should post details here - members should not be forced to go off-site to get information crucial to the the thread. Please post abstracts/summaries Thanks I have removed the links as they were slightly odd in that the showed one link but seemed to be via facebook. Please post straight links rather than anything else as members may not wish to go to some sites and should be able to ascertain where they are going from the blue underlined text
  19. ! Moderator Note Boxer Which bit of "Please do not respond to this moderation except through the reporting system" was unclear? I have hidden your response. Please do not respond to this moderation except through the reporting system. Will everyone stick to the science please.
  20. ! Moderator Note I have hidden two posts concerning Member's affiliations with academic institutions and other matters. This is not the place to be discussing the person - there is a good thread going on the science and methodology; can we please stick to that? Could we also bear in mind a few logical fallacies; - A poster being part of or not part of an academic body should not influence our response to their argument. - The fact that a poster is wrong on an unrelated matter - or in a different place - does not affect the validity of this argument here. It may influence our readiness to give credence or point us in a particular direction to find factual/methodlogical flaws - but it does not disprove or void a contention. Please let us avoid the easy distractions and continue this interesting discussion. Please do not respond to this moderation except through the reporting system
  21. Haven't we done this already It is gonna be around order of 10 to the 22 atoms for every gram - so Billions in a metaphorical sense of large number but millions of billions of billions of billions of atoms in the counting sense. And each atom is of course...
  22. Agreed - alhough I might add that the Coalition allowed (either through inaction, or worse, complicity) people to take the reins of power (in government, business, restructuring, and the military) who were wholly against building a long term safe future for Iraq but dedicated to asset stripping. The plan was poorly thought out and incompentently executed and those third parties brought in were mercenary, corrupt, and completely unsuitable.

  24. ! Moderator Note WARNING Next post which references the goings-on at any other forum will get hidden. This is ScienceForums.Net - any discussion either takes place here or we won't bother. I will not allow silly rivalry from another forum to spoil a good discussion. Please also take a look at a definition of argumentum ad hominem - this is a logical fallacy which is also banned. Describing a Poster as X and hence claiming that Poster's argument must be wrong is fallacious and will also not be allowed. Stick to the science and do not let outside arguments into this thread. Do not respond to this moderation except via the report function
  25. Very much so - the temptation to revert to addiction is high, combine this with a feeling of despondency because one has a temporary lapse and you can restart your addiction with a sense of relief and inadequacy to the task. But if you know in advance that the task is long and tough and that there will be minor blips then you are ready for the short relapse and it doesn't cause the complete breakdown. Failure is accepting one is a smoker again - failure is not one's momentary loss of resolve; the two are not the same
