Actual vs apparent universal expansion rate
imatfaal replied to StringJunky's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
The hubble limit is that distance at which the distance between an emitter and an observer is increasing at greater than lighter speed - this is due to expansion. But we also have accelerated expansion (it is not just expanding but the rate of the expansion is increasing) - horribly confusingly this means that we will one day see stuff that is outside our hubble limit. The limit of what we can see in an accelerating expansion universe is called the particle limit -
yes you will - it just needs to be very good shade. Bottom of the Monument Zenith Telescope in London - or (a little scarier bottom) of a deep well etc.. Or a perfectly adjusted telescope looking in the opposite side of the sky from the sun will allow you to spot Sirius or Canopus if you are lucky

I think that is a little harsh - it is an interesting gedanken; it helps one concentrate on the limitations of the personal sensorium, the nature of the self, and systems / communications in a sort of Niklas Luhamn sort of sense. Bishop Berkeley's subjective idealism (famous for Johnson's "I refute it..." ) is a very interesting concept which bears considerable study

The mistake is assuming that paradigm shifts occur from without science whereas they are always driven from within science. Blue sky thinking and out of the box imagineering are marketing speak - but they create nothing but copy. Scientists must be able to say but how do we test that... and therein lies the reason that why questions are not investigated - because as soon as the empirical method is used the question becomes "what model can I create that explains not only that which we know, does not contradict the other models we are sure of, but also explains a tiny bit of what we are asking 'why?' about?" 'Why?' questions are infinitely regressive - 'How can I show?' questions admit to a real-world answer. The other trouble - especially manifest in fora like this - is that the 'How can I show?' requires a background of many years previous study, serious hard graft, and an engagement with current knowledge and research colleagues. "Why?" questions most often merely demonstrate a reluctance to "make the hard yards" and learn what we currently know.

But getting people to act according to orders without hesitation, deviation, or repetition is achievable through discipline - but not through humiliation. I work in the office side of an industry which ship-side still relies on complete compliance with orders for the safety of lives, integrity of our ships, and protection of the environment. In an emergency (and we have them as terrifying as anything - engine room fire when you are in a north atlantic storm sitting on top of 30000 tonnes of gasoline) our officers and crew react exactly as they should because they have been well and continuously trained, they understand and recognize their duties, and the chain of command is firm. The debasement and dehumanizing is anathema to a good group performance - you end up with thoughtless grudging half-responses not the mindful and active reaction of a real team

Heat death is a proposed final stage when all useable mass - energy has been converted to heat and the universe is full of nothing but long wavelength radiation which is slowly stretched (like the CMBR was stretched from hot ultraviolet to very cold microwave). Nothing is hot enough, energetic enough to emit new short wavelength radiation. very boring very dull almost completely homogeneous - entropy has won and there are no structures, nothing above the almost lowest energy state; in fact nothing to do apart from sit back and hope one of the cyclical models were true.

I disagree with that - I have no direct knowledge - but surprisingly (or maybe not) for a pacifist from a family of pacifists the generation of my parents was highly involved in the military; of the seven people (my parents and their siblings) only my mother was not in active service overseas (3 army 1 Raf 2 Nurses) during wartime. Thus when I was growing up there was often discussion / debate / rows about the services. But one thing everyone agreed upon (from my uncle who ended up a Brigadier to the Nurse who was also a Nun) was that the sort of NCO who humiliated, debased, and dehumanized lasted a lot less time, was markedly worse at his/her job, and was a throw back to between the wars when National Service was predominant. The good NCOs were described as hard as nails, tough and unbending, but super-protective and patriarchal - the bad NCOs as little hitlers, compensating bullies, uncaring and dangerous to be around.

The revelation of intimate conversations - and more importantly the power to do this unilaterally - is designed to show that one party has control and the other is subject to this control. This is the very act of humbling someone - the subjectification of the individual; "we are not equal - I exercise authority without bounds and you accept everything I do without question" remember that humbling and humiliation come from the same root. The baring (both literally via removal of clothes and metaphorically by removal of the personal sphere) of the humbled is commonplace; look at any ancient texts concerning the treatment of prisoners or the accused - they are stripped, they must answer questions without limit, their every action is watched and noted, they must obey without hesitation, and they can hold nothing physical private to themselves. Sound similar to most armed forces?

Find the off weight golf ball
imatfaal replied to TakenItSeriously's topic in Brain Teasers and Puzzles
three weighings is enough - too long to post so here is a pdf. FYG I have not double checked the details and I am likely to have screwed up somewhere; the method works it is the dood at the keyboard that needs fixing to read chart note that after weighing balls are considered as G - Known as Good, U - Still no knowledge H - in a group one of which is heavy L - in a group one of which is light 3 weighings.pdf Didn't know if I could put a screen grab in spoiler - turns out you can -
"Now perform a legal somersault over the handlebars..." What is amazing is not only did he finish; he finished Sunday's stage - which was an absolute brute - in fifth place and might have had a chance of a win but for a puncture on the run in to the finish.

Although most people stir their coffee with a metal spoon when the add the cream. This heats the spoon up which is then removed, it also agitates the coffee causing potential greater cooling, and incorporates air; these effects are weakened if the spoon stirring is done at an already lowered temperature

Aberration in Michelson Morley Experiment
imatfaal replied to Professional Strawman's topic in Classical Physics
! Moderator Note Either make a post with a sensible question for the membership or move on to another topic please. The minutiae of an experiment carried out many years ago and - more importantly - repeated with significant improvements to the methodology and metrology do not immediately make for an interesting discussion, they are not easily accessible, nor do they seem to be controversial. Please try to spell out an argument which flows from your perceived inaccuracies in MM, goes through the hypothesis which explains the contrary results, and then try to formulate a model and thence experiment to bolster idea. The argument should not rely on youtube videos No need to respond to this moderation within the thread -
You do realise that you can mention books - it is just plugging your own that is against the rules. If the age on your profile is correct I had read most of Swift's work before you were born - so I am pretty sure I wouldn't be confused into thinking you were the 18th century anglo-irish satirist back from the dead to increase the circulation of this book.

Difficult to be too soon when related to that bullying cheat

No. Because of the Lance era legacy professional cyclists are far and away the most tested athletes on earth.

I was quite chuffed that I completed the first 100km of my ride this morning faster than the first 100km of the leaders of the tour de france. Admittedly my ride was 101km... ...and not to mention that the professional did their second 100km 25% quicker and then sprinted at 60km/h plus

And he carried on to finish the stage! Today's recovery is a mere 208km into a constant headwind

! Moderator Note You might have noticed that similar topics get shut down. We don't dispense medical advice — this is not the right platform for that. Most of your posts are merely annoying - it is sad to see you plumb new depths and cross over to the offensive.

! Moderator Note thread locked you had your chance and you blew it. Do not reintroduce this topic.

Once more we see those celebrating brutally attacked with the promotion of terror and creation of hatred as the primary motivation of terrorist murderers. I cannot begin to imagine the shock and horror of those directly involved nor even those just in the same city; but my heart goes out to them. France - the birthplace of so much that is good and progressive is being recast as a place of callous division, and extreme hatred, but this is not true, will never be true, and the French spirit will not be subverted by violence. I hope that the citizens can remain strong - as they did after the last two, so recent, outrages; and that they continue to refuse to give in to the hate, that the bonds between and within communities grow stronger are not fractured as the murderers wish them to be, and that France remains France

I would have thought that you would struggle with the idea of localization of a photon - ie you cannot sharply localize a photon

this is a joke -- I repeat -- this is a joke. I really hope various world leaders just tell him to flip off
