I don't want us to lose sight of what this thread is about - it's not really about gun control. 1138 killed in 2015 It is very worrying (what's worrying is 1138 - but...) that a quick skirt about the databases finds a discrepancy of about 8-10%. Now these databases are not concerned with legal niceties*, nor potentially fuzzy data, nor even disputable facts; yet in the richest country in the world with computing superpowers and media giant there is that sort of variance in a pretty simple metric. There is no blame association here, no legal definitions of homicide - just a simple measure; the fact that collectors can be different by 100 shows that there is still huge amounts of work to be done in quantifying this problem. Just as an aside; for a country which holds its independence and liberty from government interference so highly that America insists on keeping the (in my eyes) frankly mad second amendment there sure is very little fuss about the fact that around 3 citizens a day are killed by law enforcement officers. * ironically and perhaps quite sentiently my auto-correct wanted to change "legal niceties" to "legal ethnicities" - maybe the spell-check admits things that the general public are too afraid / too ashamed to admit to themselves. 53 killed so far in 2016

It is a fascinating challenge Daedalus - still mulling it over. It is too complex for me but I am enjoying worrying away at the smaller bits I can get my teeth into. BTW - please don't give away any answer yet. BTW2 - Did you work out equations for both the forms above? I presume you noticed that the top animated gif does not have a master cylinder - all the connexions are hinged; whereas in the blow, suck, squeeze, bang diagram and your mathematica gif there is a fixed master cylinder. I wonder if the difference is important. Again - please don't give the answer to even this bit away.

! Moderator Note OK - Thread locked. Granpa you can PM me or another member of staff to get the thread re-opened iff you are willing to follow the guidelines suggested by Mordred and Phi above. We just don't like leaving threads with seemingly erroneous claims and faulty assertions open on the main fora - when/if you are willing to defend your position then we can rethink but leaving the thread open grants an implicit credence to your claims that we do not wish to allow.
-
Finally you say something we can all agree with (spelling excepted). You cannot just jump into this topic and expect to understand everything. Frankly I disagree with some of the things said by others above in the thread - and I don't understand other bits that have been said; but one goes away to think and calculate, to reread and digest, and to check and recheck. You seem to feel that everything deserves an instant response - and you are responding to people who work in research physics, forum experts, well-respected members and non-nothing bozos (like yours-truly). And almost every response tell someone that they are wrong - do you really think you are this good?

I would suggest that mucking around with Sulphuric Acid to produce a highly flammable substance is the sort of experiment that should be done AFTER you know the theory, the quantities, the reaction, and the necessary safety precautions - ie NOT as a part of the learning process

Who cares if it is visible through our second rate monkey-eyes - it is detectable. Your assumption is incorrect (again) - the "light-travel distance" would be around 13.2 billion years. But the light travel distance does not take into account expansion (in light travel distance the size of the observable universe is 13.8 Gly) - I think the further galaxies are at about z=8.5 and about 30Glyr No the radiation is exactly the same as microwave radiation generated in a lab. There was just a universe full of it - so we still detect it. Crossing a distance which we could measure today as 45 Gly Stop trying to push people into corners with silly phrasings like "Do you agree?" - you are not in a courtroom and we are not hostile witness limited to y/n answers - nor are you a mentor trying to draw out students' knowledge. A whole dose of humility would do you the power of good and might allow you to start to learn about a topic which clearly fascinates you.

[ot] I think it can - in very specific circumstances and probably not the OP's - lead to wholly differing approaches. We knew that peptic ulcers were related to bad diet, high stress, specific food types, t2 etc so our research focussed there; but without this knowledge we might have thought to rule out an infective agent first. Warren and Marshall's work was mocked because it ignored so much already known. On the whole I agree with your comment - and the approach is really only available to those who know and understand the topic completely and deliberately choose to ignore ideas rather than those wrongly assuming that their own patchwork knowledge will suffice [/ot]

Sodium Hydroxide + Acetaminophen part 2

! Moderator Note Codeine is a Part II Class B Drugs controlled drug under the misuse of drugs act 1971 in the UK I think the upshot of that legislation is that pharmacy prepared mixtures and solutions are legal to possess - but that possession of non-pharmaceutically prepared substances without a valid prescription could be illegal. As such I do not believe that it is a valid and proper discussion for our boards - thread locked. -
Going to be difficult - but a good gedanken. I am not sure you have given enough scope for your putative scientists to discover/deduce anything Your phrasing shows how little you understand this topic - and why so many posters are frustrated at your continued attempts to pick holes in a theory you seem to have no real grasp of. 1. The CMBR is isotropic - which I think is what you mean from your first sentence 2. No idea about second sentence 3. Wah? The CMBR is light - it started off as ultraviolet and is now microwave - but that is all still light. If you are positing new special characteristics - then the question is why? 4. OK 5. Still not entirely sure about this sentence i. We are told the surface of last scattering beyond which we see only opaqueness is at a distance of 45 Gly ii. We know that a minimally cool opaque plasma universe would give off light in the ultraviolet at around 3000k. iii. We are seeing light in the microwave with a temperature of just below 3k. iv. We know that an expanding background "stretches" light by increasing its wavelength and in effect cooling. v. We would note that the redshift given agrees with our predictions of a universe-wide opaque plasma (3000k) leading to a universe-wide background radiation which has been cooled (to <3k) by an expanding universe. vi. We would estimate (not knowing about accelerated expansion) that the expansion which has caused the redshift was simple and linear. vii. We would also estimate that the limit of the light observable universe (ie the surface that is now the CMBR and is/was the surface of last scattering) was of radius about 40 Mly when the universe stopped being opaque and started to transmit light

! Moderator Note conway do not attempt again to shoehorn your locked topic into other discussions. this is hijacking and will result in sanctions. i have hidden your post and the quite correct follow up message. do not respond to this moderation within the thread -
Our ideas about the universe would be incorrect. But as you have just made the statement up from thin air it is not worth worrying about. David - unless this thread gets back to being about honest inquiry and stops being you (seemingly automatically) gainsaying what ever answers you are given I shall report this thread for a moderator to move to specs or close down.

Bjarne - all the atomic clocks satellites in all the various GPS systems need to be adjusted for their relative velocity and the change in gravitational potential; how is this not a wide-spread, on-going, real-world test of relativity? If GR (remember SR is a limited case of GR) was not correct - ie if its predictions of time dilation were askew - then your GPS, my mobile phone, and his aircraft navigation system would go awry in a matter of days. The time corrections predicted by GR are on the order of tens of microseconds per day - but the accuracy of GPS is on the order of the distance light travels in nanoseconds (a light nano-second is about a foot - lovely coincidence n'est-ce pas?). So for triangulation to work (ok it is not simple triangulation) the time signal sent from each clock must be corrected adjusted. The triangulation does work so the adjustment is correct. It is too much of a logical leap to say therefore GR works - but it is very persuasive. And any theory that says that GR is wrong has to explain (without the use of GR) why the time adjustment is what it is.

I would prefer it if children were free of external influences which hasten their sexual awakening (or bring the trappings of such down upon them before they are mentally and physically ready - but then who is truly mentally ready) - but in a culture where this seems impossible I would much prefer it if their introduction to sex was people who were fond of each other tenderly bonking on the beach rather than the filmic representation of a testerone-soaked jock banging a pneumatic-breasted bimbo as if he was a jackhammer and she needed to be broken. More Sex - less Porn. More Sex - less Violence. More Sex - less talking about sex. 1 1 - This is a manifesto not a wish list2 2 - Ok; it is a manifesto and a wish list

How are distances to a satellites measured?
imatfaal replied to Bjarne's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
AS far as I am aware none of the "probe anomalies" can cast any real light on GR or its flaws. The calculations are performed using modified newtonian dynamics (they're not just for the dark matter denying sort) because the chances of arriving at a solution to the field equations for a dynamic multibody system are next to nothing - we believe that these calculations produce predictions that are very close to that which GR would produce; but to say GR is flawed on the basis of a MOND-only calculation is ridiculous. Bjarne - I still don't know what more you want from satellites in order to be a valid experimental test-bed. The early Galileo test satellites had three independent and differently designed atomic clocks - whilst Major Tim Peake (and his friends - but he gets a mention from a fellow Brit) are useful and great for the media - human intervention is not essential; there are oodles of experiments and comparisons with predictions that can be done with an array of satellites all with 10^-14ish sec accuracy clocks. -
I think it is a very sad world in which children learn what guns do*, what wars are, how other children are starving, of the stranger-danger, of the dangers of gambling/drinks/drugs - all before they learn where babies come from. Yes - children need to be protected from predatory adults and part of that protection is a removal of children from the personal sexual sphere. *This is not a dig at the US cos the same would apply in the UK x-posted with delta1212

Phi - cannot agree with your reasoning (although not arguing with the imputed intent of not rushing children towards sexual awakening) if this was the reason then I would argue that if you were correct the following would apply: A. Other methods of change would at least be attempted in order to follow same course - this is not the case. Over the last 50 years whilst our taboos about public sex have remained fairly constant the infantilization of the object of desire has run wild. The pop-stars, actresses, and role models for young people now are sold and promoted as highly sexed and highly sexual whilst at the same time eschewing all real physical maturity but instead aiming for a waif-like faux-innocent doublezero / or skinnyjeaned and smoothchinned (delete as applicable). Even the older stars diet, wax, preen, and generally look sillier and sillier in an attempt to look as young as possible. B. The more societies control public sex and displays of affection the more children are protected from sexual experience - simply not true. The polities with the most repressive ideas about keeping sexual activity quarantined and even refusing to allow discussion let alone display nearly always practice forced teenage marriage of young early teen girls to whomsoever their father chooses.
-
Agree completely. Women's control over their own fertility and sexual activity is one of the most crucial and oft lacking stages in a progression to a truly modern state. And a stage that is actively rejected and even retired from in many quasi-modern polities (Hey Religious South/Mid West I am talking about you!) Hans Rosling's presentations on age of new mothers, number of children per mother, level of female control over reproduction etc and the correlations with health, wellbeing, wealth, life-expectancy are quite shocking. More on the OP - it is also shocking how many of the (possibly sensible) taboos on defecation have come to be paralleled by taboos on sex - and, before the point is raised, I don't think it is the other way around. Sex is Dirty, if something is dirty it may be harmful, if it is harmful then it should be controlled; that's the logic but the axiom is flawed. The complaints about mothers breastfeeding in public are equally absurd

! Moderator Note a. It was rubbish b. You can report moderator actions but do not open a thread to whine. c. On second glance; it is definitely rubbish d. The main science fora are for science - not flights of fancy e. We have enough to do without moving stuff that the OP should have known where to post but was too lazy to do so. I see you didn't bother with the courtesy of getting Swansont's user name right - or was that a little jibe? f. Yep - checked again; it's still rubbish g. Accusations of racism in an anonymous forum are just silly - we don't know or care about your skin tone; we just note that you post rubbish. Please stop. h. ... i. ...er that's it

The Theory of Relativity will begin to fall apart this year.
imatfaal replied to Bjarne's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note Ok - thread locked until Bjarne comes back with the calculations from his theory of what his predicted anomalies are for at least a few GPS satellites or Glonass (have an even greater angle to the equator if that is useful) or Galileo Satellites (the test beds Giove A/B have three different atomic clock aboard btw so no problems with timing). You can PM me when you either have the calculations - or can at least provide the detailed model that will allow us to proceed. You do not get to say that we don't understand SR and GR on a semi-synchronous orbit whilst we use GPS to such an amazing level of detail. I would expect such a claim can be backed up with an equation that takes in the orbital parameters (radius, inclination, direction) and pops out a predicted aberration Do not reopen this topic unless you are prepared to provide the equations to back up your very strong assertions
