Hi, does anyone know of techniques which can reveal hidden pigments on rocks? A friend has found stones with prehistoric pictures. He threw what he thought was a plain stone in a fire, and a picture appeared. So he started paying more attention to stones coming out of a pit where construction work is being done. One of them has a picture of Mastodon. He believes these are from pre clovis people, and is in a county in New Jersey. Right now we have a hundred questions. The first question is what is the best way to reveal the pictures. A black light doesn't do anything. Is there something that will increase the visibility of the pictures? Any suggestion for how these artifacts should be handled, or of the possible people who left them?

Oh good then we don't have to worry about reality, because it doesn't really effect us.

Good God, I don't know how this thread got in my notifications. I don't have a clue what is being said here. If this is information the average person should know, the language needs to be different. My only defense is, my father who was an engineer and played an important role in sending Apollo to the moon, had no patiences for language he could not easily understand.

You all might want to google rare again. In one day the google search has totally changed, because it is quickly rising to an International crisis. China has a monoply on the world's supply and it has embargoed rare earth to Japan which has built its economy on high tech equipment. No way would China dominate the rare earth supply if this stuff were not rare, or at least the supply that can be mined and processed. The mines in California, that supplied the silcon valley, had to be closed because of leaking radiation. http://www.nytimes.c...-on-rare-earths Unlike silver which had value in ancient times, the value of this stuff is related to high tech technology. China wants to replace Japan and the US as the world's supplier of high tech equipment, that is computers, satilites and military weapons, not pretty silver necklaces and earings. This has huge economic, political and military ramifications. We all know we have fought wars for the control of oil. Rare earth is as vital to our high tech way life as oil. Underdstanding mineral resources is understanding the distiny of nations. Believeing there is plenty of usable rare earth and walking away as though this discussion is unimportant, is to be politically naive, and then who is going to rule the world? The folks who don't know what mineral resources have to do with economies, politics and wars, but think Obama has a cute ass?
-
Japan is getting really uptight because China has stopped sending rare earth to Japan, since Japan arrested the captian of a Chinese fishing boat who rammed Japanese boats. Japan must have rare earth to make things like computers. It might be able to get some rare earth fron Vietman, but this is beside the point. The point is, rare earth is rare and our high tech. industries must have it and I would like to know how to go about finding it. Investing in rare earth would be a good idea for those who have money to invest.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/10/national/main7041217.shtml This link says it was a plane and explains the optical illusion. It says it was moving too slow to be a missile. I think a check of airports should clarify this matter. A plane like that wouldn't come from someone's back yard and leave without a flight plan.

Great, I was wrong again. But how wrong? Gas is matter but no solid, right? Does gas have gravity? I am trying to imagine what would have the force of gravity if not a solid?
-
Thanks Janus. I had time to look for more information and found a good picture of what you said at: http://en.wikipedia....ravity_of_Earth There is more to learn of the earth's gravity than I realized. Diego12, you might check the site for the equation that might answer your question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What a totally fascinating possibility. Hasn't something already been said about the expansion following the big bang, slowing and consolidation occurring when the soup began to cool? I get from what you said, that there has to be something solid before there can be gravity, and nothing can be solid at the extreme heat of the big bang. Is that right?

What is it you hope to achieve with chemistry? That is a big field and a good place to start is in the kitchen with cooking. However, I am assuming you had something a little exotic in mind. The DVD offered here appears to be a good starting place. http://www.amazon.com/Men-Women-Science-Complete-Chemistry/dp/B003JOOD20 It will give an idea of how big the field is and help get some direction. Have you tried googling adult chemistry sets?

Electric current to the brain boosts math ability
Athena replied to seouldavid's topic in Science News
Here are more links. http://organizedwisdom.com/electrical-brain-stimulation-may-raise-math-skill/3196610/nxi/med I would try this electrical immediately if I knew how to access it. There is a limit to how much the electrical stimulus can help. It has something to do with the direction of the electrical impulse, so I would bet the treatment would not help everyone. Those who are good at math, would already have the electrical pathways for being good at math. I think the treatment would only help those who are not good a math, because they do not have the necessary electrical pathway. What I imagine happening is possibly curing some mental disorders with electrial treatments making necessary electrical pathways.- 4 replies

Hum, I was under the impression Star Wars was a military expense. Isn't there a strategic reason for having a base on the moon? Actually, it appears China and possably Russia and Japan are interested in the hellium 3. There isn't a whole lot of it on earth. This means nuclear plants are not practical because the earth resources are too limited. However, the moon has a lot of the stuff. This means energy, and energy means a good economy, and a good economy means a first class military. http://www.dailygala...-moon-heli.html Moontanman, I think you will appreciate this one http://www.wired.com/science/space/news/2006/12/72276 It was NASA'a plan for a moon base

I interpreted the question differently. The democratic government of the US was a shared dream. We seem to have loecome discouraged with the dream, as we understand voting as a fight among people with conflicting interest, instead of shared reasoning that lifts the human potential. However, I agree with Pioneer about shared consciousness and symbols. Some research on dreaming and telepathy has been done. http://www.esalenctr.org/display/confpage.cfm?confid=5&pageid=62&pgtype=1 sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Scientific discovery is staggering: fish walk on the bottom of the sea!
Athena replied to tatu22's topic in Earth Science
http://creature.star.md/spotted-handfish-most-endanger This is another picture of a hand fish that is a better shot of the hand. It unquextionably has 5 fingers. I think this one looks very much like a frog, only its back legs aren't developed and it has fins. As long as this creature is in water, the back end is used for swimming, instead of walking or jumping. -
The way humans treat territory rights, I would think it is very important the US secure a claim to at least part of the moon. I googled moon verses Mars and didn't find a good explanation for choosing Mars over the moon. I thought the arguments for choosing the moon were best. If something went wrong, it be much easier to get help to the moon than Mars, or get people back. But the Mercury on the moon is a problem.

This is a relatively new discovery that is opening up a whole area of reseach. http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/08/15/plankton-cause-hurricanes-urgent-action-required/ Plankton has more to do with weather than we preivously thought. Not all plankton is the same. We need to do more reseach before we can use this information effectively. I am wondering if we are doing something that has increased the growth of plankton and therefore contributes to global warming and the destructiveness of hurricanes?

I am becoming increasingly concerned about global warming and the wars this has caused in Africa, because such inhumane conditions will spread as the problems with a water shortage in some areas, and flooding in others, spread. I think our early realization of what technology can do for us, lead to totally unrealistic expectations and the reality of the Military Industrial Complex which is excessive materialistic. On the good side, this rapidly advanced science and technology. Now we are smart but lack the wisdom we need to use our technology well. Mass education must also include good moral judgment and this is better with science than religion. However, in the rush to rapidly advance technology for military and industrial purpose, we dropped education for good moral judgment and left moral training to the chruch. This is devastatng. We are in such a mess with science and technology without values on the one hand, and religion without science on the other! I believe, what we can achieve if we put a sense of awe and reverence and humanism together, with our advanced science and technology, is really awesome. It has to come together, because we are democracies and only those values and dreams we share, will get public funding. If we continue down the path of state nexus rather than family nexus, we are doomed. This is not the kind of power that can get us through the challenges we face at this time. Military might is not going to reduce a mass die off, nor lead to a desirable quality of life, and it will not protect our liberty and justice. We have to get humanism and science back together, and curb religion with scince as well.

How to Regrow the Rainforest in 10 Minutes or Less
Athena replied to Smithsonjohn's topic in Science News
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. It made no sense to me at all, because we are right off the west coast and I thought the increased temperature would increase evaporation from the ocean, and therefore, increase our rainful, but we are experiencing the opposed of this. Thanks to your prodding I made the effort of getting more information. Before I add to what Mr. Sketic said, I want to say how thrilling it is read his explanations of things. I am in awe of how much he seems to know. However, his explanation only makes me feel worse after reading what is said here.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drought . Humanity is facing some major challenges, and our public education system needs to have a nature and survival agenda immediately. The link explains why some forest are getting close to a tipping point, and why Oregon forest are in danger instead of thriving. California heats up the air, and this effects the air pressure in such way we are enjoying pleasant winters, with occasional bizarre weather. Seriously gardening has become a challenge. No one got broccile from their spring gardens and usually broccile does very well here, but our seaonal weather cycle is all messed up. For sure we need to take action to protect forest, and the link does say what we can do. I am thinking Oregon needs to adopt the California logging practice of thinning forest instead of strip logging. I could be wrong, but I think, the lack of water means we need to reduce the number trees soon, if we are going to have a chance of saving our forest. However, logging individual trees rather than strip logging has to be much more difficult and costly. Lemur, I read your next post, and your thinking is an excellent demonstration of the importance of science. I was going to say we are facing a mass die off. I don't think we can avoid this, but we might manage it better with science and technology. However, I didn't want to take the thread off topic. I now state my concerns, to clarify my sense of passion. I love deserts as much as I love forest, but as the link explains, the new deserts will not be the living deserts that have evolved. We are facing a crisis and need to be as informed as possible, so we can manage things the best they can be managed. -
I don't like to speak of our president being wrong, but Obomo is wrong to to cut back on our space program, and leave the moon to Japan and China. Japan has advanced robotiics, and the moon appears the perfect place for robotics to be advanced even further in mining activity. Whatever advances science and technology is worth our effort and the cost. To pull out now and leave this to Japan and China, seems a terrible mistake to me.

How to Regrow the Rainforest in 10 Minutes or Less
Athena replied to Smithsonjohn's topic in Science News
Lemur, that was a comforting thought, but than I realized the issue is lack of water and that effects the growth of all trees. Some trees require more water than others, so may be some trees would have a better survial rate, however... Tempature is an issue and Oregon has Mountains. Only some trees can survive in the higher altitude. Forest soils can be poor, so there is a soil issue as well. Now with the soil and tempature and altitude issues, how are the right trees going to get in the right places? If the problem is a lack of rain fall, these trees will need watering at least until they develop an adquate root system. How will they get watered? -
How to Regrow the Rainforest in 10 Minutes or Less
Athena replied to Smithsonjohn's topic in Science News
This is a google page for rapid growth trees. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=rapid+growth+trees+poor+timber&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= I am in Oregon and our tress are getting stressed because of lack of water. I think we can agree if global warming, results in trees being stressed and then a loss in trees, the problem will get worse. -
Amazing what the right wod can do for understanding. Thanks for your comment. It is fetch that would make a tsunami wave so high, right? If nothing blocked the moverment of energy there would not be a huge wave. The energy would get spent going forward instead of upward, right? Now I have to ask, do waves of light and sound behave like waves of water or a rope? Okay, it seems to me plenty of times I have read magnetic when t should be gravitational. Is there a good way to define gravity? Hopefully, something that will stick in my weak brain, so I don't make the mistake again.

Moontanman, would you please explain your statement? There is hot lava under Greenland, right? I am less hopeful of keeping this area cool. In fact, now I think stopping global warming might be impossible. Please build on what you have said. I know you won't like this, and I hope it doesn't get my banned, but this is the Age of Aquarius. Aquarius is the first sign of the Zodiac. It is the Water Bearer. Don't native Americans carry the idea that the earth will be cleansed with water? Perhaps we should build a high tech Noah's ark to save what life forms we can, and consider the management of the planet after the cleansing? Seriously, might a high ark be possible?

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/tech/emergency-mine-rescue.html You all might want to check out this Nova program. I think it is totally awesome that a Nova crew could be on the scene and record the event in more detail than our news can give us. It is awesome that when these events happen, everyone around the world can be aware of them at the time of the event. This transcends us beyond our own back yard and beyond our religious and national groups. I believe the promise of the New Age is a possibility. The New Age is a time of peace, high tech, and the end of tyranny.
