  1. This is so not a fair vote they are both awesome... I think Ferrero Roche would have to be better as a single thing but lindt come in different flavours. As 1nc4rnation said, I also assumed he was talking about them as they are a similar style of product.
  2. Only in excess amounts, the main problem with small amounts of alcohol is the increased rates of cancer when it is over a long period, however this can't be proved infallibly for obvious reasons. It vastly depends on the person to what the psychological effects of alcohol are, the effect of alcohol is very different from person to person as well as what mood they are in at the time.
  3. No, but then I have nothing against abortion presuming that when the "birth" occurs the fetus can't survive on its own.
  4. Do you have any evidence for that, it sounds like it is just tiredness and working hard that is actually causing problems. Seems similar to the study that showed that using a computer in the dark didn't strain your eyes any more than using it with the light on and it was purely a psychological thing. The is a misnomer unless you start eating the light or smashing them into small pieces causing dust particles there is no problem.
  5. A graphics tablet They are regularly used in graphics design and digital art. Take your pick You don't even need it to work with Microsoft Word you can just use any program and save it as a .JPEG file and import it.
  6. Apart from that inevitably limiting the gene pool and skewing the sex ratio. I am personally not in favour of genetic alteration or selection unless the change is going to cause an undue detrimental effect on the persons life and that really doesn't include not being able to reach the can at the back of the top shelf at the supermarket. If anything it would just cause greater distress to the people who hadn't had the genetic alterations if it came common place.
  7. Lifestyle correlates of musical preference: 1. Relationships, living arrangements, beliefs, and crime Lifestyle correlates of musical preference: 2. Media, leisure time and music Lifestyle correlates of musical preference: 3. Travel, money, education, employment and health BBC News article about the papers There are some abstracts of relevant articles and a news article about them. I would think that personality traits are drawn towards certain types of music and then those people meet others like themselves and get along with each other slightly segregating their personality traits from the rest of society, I would doubt that certain types of music change your personality.
  8. No they're not, they were increasing the ageing process in the first place by not doing those things. I mean calorie restriction, isn't extending their life, being fat was killing them. Eh...not really gene therapy can only be used before someone is born to have any extensive effect and the biological systems aren't even understood well enough to use nanotechnology to fix them, not to mention the technology not even being available for any practical use in vivo.
  9. First step is to find solvents for all the membrane proteins, that will easily take you until you die so there is little point in mentioning anything else.
  10. If you distil the alcohol you leave all the congeners behind that is the point of it and to increase the strength of it, I guess if you took the part you wanted to get rid of that would be a mix of them but they wouldn't be pure. Ethanal (acetone) is made in the liver by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase it removes the H off the OH to produce a C=O with the help of NADH, hence one of the reasons you get fat off drinking to much alcohol because you saturate your NADH so it can't be used in metabolism. It just tastes rubbish IMO.
  11. Say what?! Have none of you people drunk in your life? The main reason you get a hangover after drink other than dehydration which can be mainly avoided (I say mainly as you really can't completely) is sulphites especially present in red wine and weak alcohol such as beer, cider and alcopops. It works as a preservative for the drink that is why it is there, but if you buy good quality vodka (not smirnoff that is rubbish, I am think of something more like 3x the price of that) then one it will actually taste nice and secondly apart from the effect of dehydration very little of a hangover will occur. The other reason hangovers occur is due to general ion and vitamin deficiency, cause with all puns intended, you piss it all away, you can get sachets that can be mixed with water that help this problem. However for a cheap solution you can just mix a little salt with quite a bit of sugar in a glass of warm water (put too much salt in and you just vomit though) I have always known the phase as wine then beer you'll feel quire, beer then wine your feel fine. I don't actually know the answer to why that would be, but I can think of a few ideas, the first as someone has mentioned is that beer is fairly dillute and therefore would dillute the wine as it comes in reducing its potensy and absorbtion rate however you still get the same amount of alcohol it just give your liver longer to metabolise it. Another, in the case of wine specifically, it has a lot of other congeners (chemical impurities) in it giving in flavour and colour (same with ales and Scrumpy ciders) and with beer going in after and maybe with any weak grain based drink it just doesn't mix well. A third could be the bubbles, if you drink beer first the bubbles will have subsided whereas if you take them after a stronger drink it could have some physiological effect, don't know what that could be though. If you want to see how bias the site is lets have a look at a few points: It does give you energy, it is a organic carbon chain the definition of stimulent such as cocaine and a depressent such as alcohol has nothing to do with energy, if you take a load of coke that does make you react faster either. Though I have never heard anyone even say this myth, normally it is funny stories about how alcohol stop it from going all that well. Making people more confident and feel better about themselves with intrisicially raise their sex drive as they have greater self esteme then they would normally have and take greater chances with people (whether that is good or bad is another question all together) in the case of guys maybe nothing will work when the times come but I can't really see the problem for girls. I would like to see some evidence that it does dappen either sexes sex drive. I hardly see how they can compare heroin and cocaine to alcohol, vastly different experience and with drawal, I have never found someone craving alcohol after have a couple of drink, in fact the first time most people have it in a large amount they vow not to drink again, sort of the opposite to both the drugs mentioned. For a question to the people how, Snakebite (Half beer, Half cider sometimes with a bit of blackcurrent for flavour) is a well known drink among students as it is cheap and gets you drunk very quickly and what ever any site or study says, it does get you drunk quicker or at least make you feel it. Anyone any idea why that would be the case? With that post I am off to the pub to get drunk.

    PH question

pH = Log10 [H+] That means that pH 7 has 10x10^-7 protons per mole of solution, where as pH 8 would have 10x10^-8 which is 10x less, it is a log 10 scale, not a linear one.
  13. After a masters or PHD I would agree that your degree wouldn't matter so much, but for the case with A-levels many people have ones that aren't directly linked or are completely unrelated to the degree they have done.
  14. If this is such why has no one come to you with great interest in isolating the enzyme pathway involved as give enough of a certain substrate and essential, or what would be classed as essential under normal condition, gene knock out could the organism not be used to create fuels due to the reversible equilibrium that occurs with enzyme kinetics. Of course ethanol can already be created but I have heard of no bacteria being able to create longer hydrocarbon chains in any economically viable fashion, especially not in nature, or the opposite of catalysis for energy.
  15. Great you have a video, is that evidence, no, that is some guy talking on youtube, where are the genetic evidence, fossils, pictures, tests to prove he was abducted or at least some interesting results, anything scientific at all. I mean really, you don't even post the papers that are supposed to claim that these genetic traits exist.
  16. Alkane polymers can hardly be compared to biologically created sugar molecules and there polymers, if it were as simple as that all you would need is some oil, bacteria and a mutagen and you could mutate it to create an enzyme that could be reversed to create hydrocarbons from sugar. In reality they would just become resistant to the chemicals through mutation.
  17. It does that as well producing epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are known to increase heart rate, blood pressure and dilation of airways, which are all opposite effects that occur when you sleep, this extra metabolic activity would also raise your temperature, which lowers when you sleep.
  18. Wouldn't think so that would most likely require some enzyme that would have been exploited by now to create oil from biomass, this of course presumes that the bacteria can be isolated and grown. There won't be much evidence supporting that idea however, it probably would occur due to evolution.
  19. Become a doctor that has plenty of science and doesn't have to be research based.
  20. Or saved the world and screwed over the whole physics community, lol.
  21. To be fair if you drink excessive amounts of any alcohol it can cause heart palpitations, which I can tell you isn't that fun, it isn't just wine. I would say it is most likely hormonal at your age, most likely enhanced by other factors, be it drugs, stress, lack of sleep, too much energy, or a list of other things, but it would be very hard to pin point. My advise would be to do more exercise, doesn't have to be anything excessive, you can just buy weights and make yourself a training regime in your rooms, out do exercises that use your own body against itself such as press ups and crunches. This will most likely help the symptoms such as anger and anxiety, due to it putting energy into another task also maybe it is a psychological issue you haven't even thought of such as a mild phobia of something mundane (it happens) which most people won't even realise they suffer from. Either way doing exercise can only help you relax and relive stress, another idea to manage the symptoms is to occupy yourself with something as the simplest task can distract your mind quite easily such as passing coins between your fingers or a pen, anything that seems appropriate at the time. On the idea of psychological phobias, it could be food, watching too many programs about getting fat, dieting and the general calories in food will have an effect on any ones mind too what extent in each person can't really be known, however if you are having it at other times you can presume that the idea of eating isn't the cause, unless of course the other times are related too it, such as driving to a restaurant or similar place.
  22. Niacine is turned to nicotinamide adenosine dinucleotide (NAD) which is used in many reactions as a reducing/oxidising agent including oxidative phosphorylation. Pyridoxine hydrochloride helps with sodium and potassium balance which will assist nerve impulses as well as the formation of red blood cells helping oxygen transport. It is also part of the production of serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline which neurotransmitters or hormones and therefore control the bodies regulation. Folic acid is used to create thymine as well as other purines which is incorporated into RNA and DNA, therefore can be used to help in gene regulation supplying the required constituents. Vitamin B12 has a similar function to folic acid, being used in DNA and cell replication, fatty acid synthesis and energy production. Sodium, is probably partly used as a flavouring, but in biological terms it is used in nerve impulses as well as many other functions in general cell regulation. Tyrosine is a precursor to noradrenaline, dopamine, two neurotransmitters as well as adrenaline. Phenylalanine can be turned to Tyrosine, hence the other molecules. Taurine works to make the chemicals more miscible with water, as well as having other physiological effects but they are not really to do with energy production or release. Malic acid is used in gluconeogenesis, which make it useful when the drink is taken with exercises is is also used as a way of passing hydrogen ions into mitochondria from NADH out of the mitochondria to NAD+ within therefore meaning they can be used in ATP synthesis. Caffeine can pass the blood brain barrier and is an analogue of adenosine therefore binding to the adenosine receptors which effect the brains sleep cycle waking you up. It is also a competitive inhibitor of cAMP-phosphdiesterase therefore meaning a build up of cAMP in cells causing activation of protein kinase A, which can phosphorylate other enzymes causing glucose synthesis, however cAMP has different effects on different cells for instance the epithelial and the epithelial cells of the intestines where its presences has the opposite effect in the cases of some processes such as water and electrolyte uptake. Sodium benzoate is a preservative and EDTA is present to stop it turning to benzene a carcinogen. Sucralose, is primarily sugar however is much sweeter than glucose so is just used to make it taste nice and can most likely be metabolised into glucose to be used in glycolysis. Despite the effects of most of these chemicals, few probably have any noticeable effect unless you are deficient in them and most are probably just egested or excreted as urine without being metabolised as the body already has the required amount available.
  23. It just sounds like static electricity, especially off a door knob, it isn't an electrical output as you wouldn't suddenly get shocked randomly, however you would when you touched the bed, it would also have no correlation with sleeping. Simple solution, move your bed to another room for 2-3 days and keep everything else the same, such as bedding, temperature (as much as possible) and other factors, if it still happens it obviously isn't the room.
  24. I would like to know the science behind a photographic memory, although I have always presumed it wasn't actually photographic but just extremely good, I can remember most picture and diagrams fairly easily. Massive blocks of text are a lot harder and I would presume that I was fairly average so being able to remember a block of text would just be easier for other because of genetic factors, as well as the amount of practise they have had memorising things. They have probably just learned the skill and were naturally better at remembering in the first place the two really complement each other, if you can easily remember thing you are more likely to remember more about a particular item than another person because you have the ability too.

    Weed

Think everyone kind of missed the part where you don't have to smoke weed, there are other methods of consumption.
