I think what confuses most people today is: What exactly caused the first replicator to appear in the first place? What would be really interesting is if we could understand the replicator's need to replicate on a very basic level, so that we can explain it using the mechanisms of fundamental interaction that we know of today.
Personally, I'm mostly interested in if it even can be completely explained by the current known mechanisms, which seems like the most logical assumption, or if there is another, yet undiscovered, (scientific) "law of nature" involved.
