Roger Penrose ( one of the scientists behind the calculations for the explanations of black holes and the Big Bang ) suggested the need for a third area of Physics. One in between Quantum Physics and Classical physics . Could this be part of this huge area of missing knowledge? He spoke about it while discussing with another eminent professor on a broadcast on " In our Time " by Melvin Bragg Link :- http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p005464j [ interesting comment about 11:00 minutes in ] Is this a whole new area of Physics . Consciousness Physics . An area of Physics ;............. Not using Maths .......... But uses our Senses and our Consciousness, Mike -

Yes, but we do not necessarily wish to leave it a mystery. I am not sufficiently close to that subject to speculate. But some people must be, .Maybe you. Can you not speculate , the type of thing it could be . ( condensed matter, new element, Dark something or other, a new configuration of matter ? Roger Penrose , the physicist who worked with Stephen Hawkins on Black Holes, may have some ideas. Mike -
NASA's Unexplained Spectral Line Mystery - Dark Matter Signal?
Mike Smith Cosmos replied to IM Egdall's topic in Science News
Yes, But if what is being observed is along the general spectrum, it surely must be based on electron state transition, then . What are the possible options ? Electrons have to transit from somewhere , to somewhere .[ in association with a nucleus ] To produce a spectral emission . This function is a cornerstone of modern physics. I was wondering ,what were the possible states of the electron and/or the nucleus if these transitions are to equal approx 3.5KeV mike -
NASA's Unexplained Spectral Line Mystery - Dark Matter Signal?
Mike Smith Cosmos replied to IM Egdall's topic in Science News
..As I understand things , the universe we 'see'. , by our current methods , detection consist mainly as regards normal matter , of electrons and nuclei , and the photonic waves/particles that radiate out from the combined ( nuclei and electrons ) are what we see when we look out from the earths vicinity , say by the Chandra telescope , and other telescopes capable of viewing across the entire electro magnetic spectrum . And that the spectral line is caused by an excitation by energy , of an electron ( many electrons in other atoms ) , to a much higher energy state, followed by a fall back to a much lower energy level. The difference in energy levels, making the energy of the spectral line. In these cases around 3.5 kilo electron volts . What state is possible for an electron , or around what nucleus is necessary to attain the levels seen by the Chandra sighting ? =================================================question ================== Is it some form of double nucleus ( like in the big binary star systems ). ? Or electrons held in some super abnormal high energy levels ? Is that possible ? ========================================================================== Mike -

With the first sightings by the Chandra space telescope of possible ,new , unheard of before , physics. Here are spectral lines , showing emmision and absorption of energy band jumps, giving evidence of unknown ( elements, matter of some sort , whatever ) . Link :- We have a lot to cope with , new spectral lines, new energy, new matter . Maybe new physics to explain all this Following illustration , of island on left showing knowledge currently understood. Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light
Mike Smith Cosmos replied to copernicus1234's topic in Speculations
I think it was fair to say maxwell was working with electrical and magnetic field equations and when he took them through, to work out a speed of propagation or travel of these waves he came up with the figure of approx 300,000, kilometers ( 186,000 miles) per second as the speed for these electro magnetic waves , radio NOT LIGHT. By the principle of equivalence , he noticed that light ( not knowing its true make up ) travelled at exactly the same speed. Already measured. So he said ah.ha ! Thus QED. Light must also be electro magnetic. It's probably because everything ,(nearly everything ) is made of atoms of electrical charge and magnetic moment , so most ( not all ) of the effects coming out of , or being associated with atoms , like heat infra red waves, ultra violet waves, X-rays, gamma rays, radio waves , light waves all have similar characteristics as regards speed of propagation( travel ) . Which is why it is posited, including and starting with Maxwell, that ALL are electro- magnetic waves. Link :- http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emission_spectrum Mike -

Mike Smith Cosmos replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Speculations
Well , yes and no. I developed the idea of.... the analogy ..(of Knowledge being in a series of islands separated from the mainland body of human experience and learning)...with quite a great deal of thought. This , some years ago, when I intuitively felt , ' what there is to know is utterly, utterly vast. ' . When I was snorkeling off a Greek island . I came across this small section of rock ,under the shallow water. When I lifted my head out of the water, the rock of Aphrodite loomed above my head, rising large and skyward , and it shook me ridged with awe at its immensity. So also I felt, was the body of knowledge of the cosmos. Vast . ( Spread out a bit in differing ' chunks ' .) If I am correct , that there is a great yet undiscovered region of knowledge out there somewhere. In chunks. It needs someone/ many to go out on the open sea to look to find the location of this ' new land ' . True it might be connected via the under sea continental crust , but to all intents and purposes it's as if the bottom of the ocean is nowhere to be seen. Analogy :- We need to travel light, ( the sea is a totally different medium on which to travel) ,no bringing our entire human possessions , our house, our car, our trappings of 20 th century living , our current structure of industry and intellectual infrastructure. We are at sea with a light craft , seeking the next island, with the bare necessities to observe , survive and travel to, we know not where. I am not suggesting we all jump in the boat, but I am suggesting some people need to go and look and be accepted and supported ( if only by encouragement ) by the homeland that got us this far. Allegorical Comment :- . .mike -

I do believe the bedrock of science needs to be maintained. However two things need to be tolerated if we are to allow progress. 1 Blue sky ideas must be explored. 2 Bedrock ideas must be allowed to be challenged from time to time to make sure the foundations of science do not have a serious fault that is impeding progress. ********************. **************************. I think this is what Lee Smolin is doing here , in challenging a fundamental understanding on the nature of Time . ********************. ************************** Hence his recently published " Time. Reborn " . .When I was involved with computer function ( now only use them ) - The Clock - of the computer was one of the main foundation stones . Here an example of attention to fundamental , hidden underground foundations in need of attention . Attention being given to poor foundation , underpinning , in progress to shaw up the foundations of the house. ------ Then having discovered new " LANDS " . We will have our home island to return to , that has not crumbled into the sea. Mike -

Yes, well I am trying to get my head round , how the different time periods make a different contribution to the rock strata , pebble or particle content , that one may have in ones hand. Eg it might have been part of the ophiolite pushed up on top of Dartmoor granite, later eroded off to become part of the sediment , appearing at Beer greensand . Or a pebble carried by the River discussed to relocate at Budleigh Salterton . ( to be seen now, today ) Essay I have visited both the caldera at Tenerife and Tiede as well as the fresh eruption on La Palma (1974) . Mike -
The great Seas and Rivers of the Supercontinents.
Mike Smith Cosmos replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Earth Science
I have found out an Orogeny occurred when Eurasia was touched by the Americas causing mountains to uplift from Germany through Northern France , in and above the granite Torres on Dartmoor , past up through Ireland . These were called I believe THE HERSINIAN VARISCA . and from these mountains a massive river flowed across dessert sands past Dawlish , depositing pebbles in the pebble beds of Budliegh Salterton . The massive river flowed north across England I believe as deposits are found , with finer and finer grades as one goes north . Finally to flow out into a warm shallow sea off the north east coast of England /Scotland ( as it is now ) , some people think the river may have started where now the Rhine is in Germany . Having discussed this with a professional yet retired geologist , this appears to be the gist of one of the major rivers caused by the Orogeny and coming past us ( in the past ) near us in S.w. England . (Triassic ) times. Essay. This may fit in with your reference to the basalt outflow causing the Fingles pavement of hexagonal shapes . See the sketch I made , while conversing with the geologist , while at Beer Cliffs . Note. The small map of England on the right hand side and how the mountain Orogeny goes up past Ireland and Scotland . ( very quick sketch , while walking on slippery ,flint pebbles . Pencil slipped a bit . ) Mike -
Therein lays the 'clue' to a 'roll' . To make the system work , We input a small set amount of potential energy to each domino . Namely the difference of raising a flat fallen domino to an end on raised domino.( m x g x h joules ). h being the difference between the center of mass of a fallen domino say at 3 mm and a raised balanced domino at 25 mm, So the h contribution to the potential energy for use in knocking the next domino down will be h = 22mm . so locked up potential energy in each domino is the mass of domino in kilograms times x acceleration due to gravity of 9.81 meters/second/second x 0.022 meters. All you now need is the initial 'initiative ' energy to knock over the first domino . from then on , there will be a conversion from potential energy to kinetic energy as each domino falls forward ( 1/2 x m x v squared joules ). Conclusion : From 'Energy makes things happen' by definition . There must be sufficient inbuilt latent potential energy in a system for it to go on a 'roll ' by itself after being given the initial input initiative . Like the domino's , otherwise it will require an ongoing input of energy to keep the system 'rolling' which is not a roll . mike So if I remember correctly ( which is dubious ) If you mix up and leave to stand a mixture of Water and sodium Hydro Thio... forgotten . To a certain concentration. It will sit there looking like water. If you give the jar a knock .... crystals form continuously on a 'roll' perhaps something like that happens here but slowly ( but i am not a chemist ):-

What a beautiful piece of ART relating to Science and Philosophy :- This is how it used to be in Rome and Athens in the days of the great debates. Raphael's painting of Philosophers discussing in the streets of Rome and Athens . mike

Here they were, out on the streets, talking , discussing great thoughts. I know of no greater pleasure than to walk and sit and lay about discussing and thinking great thoughts and ideas. I am currently doing this on the streets of Exeter , and the county of Devon . Yesterday I was doing it with strangers as well as a Science Forum Original member. I have arranged to meet another member coming down from London in August . Join the great debates. This is how it used to be in Rome and Athens in the days of the great debates. Raphael's painting of Philosophers discussing in the streets of Rome and Athens . This Crystal of Aquamarine , was discussed yesterday in the shopping Prescints of Exeter, . debating the nature of reality and the way a crystal such as this , starts and rolls on in its structure, layer after layer. Many sat down , or gathered around, and made comments. One that caught my attention, was :- How a row of dominoes , stacked individually end on , roll on after the initial knock over, to become an ongoing fall, fall, fall, ............ Interesting roll on . Mike

Maybe now that the met office in Exeter is getting a 100,000,000 pound computer to model the earth and it's weather , .. Somebody .. may be able to look at the whole Earth Eco system . Then somebody may be able to answer the call :- " Who is looking out for the EARTH as a whole. " ? Mike -

. Images of the .CONNECTICUT VALLEY ( There must be 1000.s of meters of silt below this river from Super continent times ?) http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fab.mec.edu%2Fdepartments%2Ftechinteg%2Fresources%2Fstudents%2Fnewlife%2Fimages%2Fctriver2.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fab.mec.edu%2Fdepartments%2Ftechinteg%2Fresources%2Fstudents%2Fnewlife%2Fconnrivervalley.htm&h=321&w=490&tbnid=BQdsXDvREVhC0M%3A&zoom=1&docid=MMMK8hKK2CLxmM&ei=6I3DU5-yO8HA7AbT34DYBA&tbm=isch&ved=0CCEQMygAMAA&iact=rc&uact=3&dur=1228&page=1&start=0&ndsp=14 INLAND SEAS and Large Rivers If this is typical, it would seem that the rivers of the super continents were set at the collisions of other sections of the super continents colliding with each other ( Guandana etc). Oroginy , by way of mountain range uplift and splitting of super continents (Pangaea) causing rifts, allowed absolutely colossal inflows of water, complete with massive inflow of silt, pebbles rocks and general sludge. ( eg Connecticut ) also the African Rift valley, with lakes( Lake Tanganyika & Lake Victoria etc ) and presumably the Nile and the Congo River? Surely this can be construed as an inland Sea in a Continent , then as part of a super continent , when Africa collided with Eurasia and Americas ? Mike -

Mike Smith Cosmos replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Earth Science
Here is a bit of research ref great rivers of the super continents .:- Courtesy of :- Richard D. Little Professor of Geology, Greenfield Community College, Greenfield, MA CONNECTICUT VALLEY PANGEA - THE SUPERCONTINENT While the bedrock basement of the Connecticut Valley is the Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks described above, below, something very different is about to begin. The supercontinent of Pangea starts to split. Stretching stresses break the preexisting rocks creating faults that are much different from those due to compressional stresses of Paleozoic orogeny. These faults are "rifts" -- great "pull-aparts" that create prominent valleys (rift valleys or grabens) such as seen today in Death Valley and its relatives out West, as well as the famous east African valleys where our ancestors lived and evolved. The present-day Atlantic Ocean begins to form as water spills into the largest of these cracks, and the Connecticut Valley develops along one of the adjacent rifts known as the Eastern Border Fault. It defines the eastern edge of the Connecticut Valley and is over 100 miles long, from Keene, NH to New Haven, CT and beyond. Rivers washed great amounts of sediment into this valley. Great alluvial fans formed against the Eastern Border Fault margin as rivers deposited thick piles of gravel adjacent to the mountain front. Farther into the valley sand and mud were left. Many times lakes formed in the valley flats with sandy shorelines and muddy bottoms. The Connecticut Valley has as much as 30,000 feet of sediment preserved, but in the Franklin and Hampshire County area of the valley, the thickness is about 6,000 feet. But think of that -- over a mile of river and lake deposits, layer by layer, representing 10's of millions of years of history. ) JURASSIC ANIMALS AND PLANTS (HYPOTHETICAL SCENE FROM THE CONNECTICUT RIVER VALLEY Background information from same article :- GENERAL SETTING Greenfield, bounded on the east by New England's largest river, the Connecticut, and on the west by the highlands of the Berkshire Hills, is one of the best places in the world to study geology. All three rock types (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic) are easily visible on our landscape and sand, gravel, and clay deposits from the last ice age are also abundant. Topographically, Greenfield's main residential and business area is about 250' above sea level, on the flat lake bottom plain of Lake Hitchcock, a glacial lake that drained about 14,000 years ago. To the west early Paleozoic Era schist rocks of the Berkshire Hills reach elevations of 1100', while several miles away at the east end of town a prominent, scenic ridge, site of Poets Seat Tower, rises 250' abruptly above the flat valley lowlands. It's composed of early Jurassic age lava, 194 million years old, that was tilted by faulting as the great supercontinent of Pangea broke up. The more gentle eastern side of the lava ridge slopes to the shoreline of the Connecticut River which has a scenic 40' waterfall (Turners Falls) just before entering Greenfield, and flows along a valley with abundant outcrops of red sandstone sedimentary layers, which, sometimes, display dinosaur footprints!. PALEOZOIC ERA EVENTS Things were quite different in early Paleozoic times. About 600 million years ago this region was south of the equator and under the sea at the tropical edge of North America, located in the old Atlantic (known as Iapetus Ocean, named for the father of Atlas). Over several hundred million years the processes of plate tectonics propelled several landmasses to collide with this edge of North America, making mountains with each impact. The first of these orogenies (mountain-building episodes) was the Taconic. It has been recently proposed that an impact with western South America (which was part of the great southern continent called Gondwana) pushed up these mountains 430 million years ago because similar rocks and fossils are found there. As with all mountains, erosion lowered them over 10's of millions of years, and eventually the warm, tropical seas covered the region once again. An even bigger collision came next. About 400 million years ago the northwest Africa side of Gondwana hit North America creating the Acadian Orogeny which built the northern Appalachian Mountains. Greenfield and surroundings were now part of a major mountain range as high as the Himalayas. The effect of all this stress on the rock was to change these tropical marine sedimentary layers into metamorphic rocks: banded gneisses, shiny schists, and slates. Commonly parts or all of these layers melted and the magma cooled slowly into the igneous rock, granite. As the Paleozoic Era ended, erosion had worn down these lofty peaks, but the ocean never again came to Western Massachusetts. We were in the middle of the great supercontinent known as Pangea. MESOZOIC ERA The above text :- Courtesy of :- Richard D. Little Professor of Geology, Greenfield Community College, Greenfield, MA Mike -
" first come first served " Hi tar , I have been amazed in recent years how " there is nobody actually there ". Is true of all the major organisations, tax office , health service , customs and excise. At least they may have an up front call centre , but there is no boss higher up the chain. Or at least that's how it appears. " there is nobody there any more. If you are lucky you do actually speak to someone , a trained operator. But much of the time, press 2 if you want ..., press 4, if you are left handed, .... If your grandmother is of eastern extraction , press 2... Sorry all our operators are busy , try the www. " there is nobody there any more. " What happened to " yes sir , I will transfer you to the man responsible for your issue, .... " Give our civilisation 500 years there really will be " nobody there" , it will all be in silicon . So why would I not expect to engage in the " Universe Wide Network for Answers ". UWNA , did I not tell you , that was who I was in touch with when I asked my QUESTION , complete with " Universal Response Interface". URI that has an entertaining way of communicating the answers, provided you follow the "Universal Communication Protocol". UCP. which requires the left ,right ,centre, indicator method . Yeeks I should have explained. How remiss of me. No wonder you thought it was presumptuous that I would expect the higher beings to be waiting on my very infrequent request. I am sure they have more important universe matters on there plate , like aiming a meteor with precision accuracy so that another habitable world was being prepared for more intelligent life to thrive and survive in the midst of rocky , hostile environment. And setting up the fine details required to allow a , natural selection / feedback system to guard the development of supportive plant and animal life systems . It's a busy universe out there I am both insignificant by dint of numbers , yet significant by being privileged to be part of the life form that has 'cosmos ' awareness / consciousness. I do think this " INITIATIVE " principle is an indication of how , the universe works. I am not alone, for ages the saying is " he who does not ask , does not get " . Maybe that is part of the process. No forced system. I am currently working on a similar phenomenon , that many people agree when I talk to them about this particular phenomenon that I have observed throughout my life. Namely . :- If you push too hard at your initiative , it does not happen properly, . But if you slacken off, and get on with something else , your initiative happens , in a much better way . ' Festina Lente ' ..hasten slowly ...so this idea we discussed of ' the path of least resistance ' seems to be the way nature works . Eg water flows hither and thither in a stream following the line of least resistance most often . Maybe the higher life forms are looking for Not the Pushers And Shovers, but the gentle operators, or more to the point just maybe the universe works better that way . .? I think , ' if the truth be known ' , not just Mike , but thousands , millions maybe more , are consciously or unconsciously , following this procedure . Form an initiative, make or take the first step, Gently , relax and get on with other things . do not shove , push at the initiative , let it go gently away . Be aware that there are opportunities that will sometime , unbeknown at this time to you , that will sometime come floating by, . Be ready to go with them , when you feel this course of least resistance , open before you . Go gently on your thread ( tube ) towards your initiatives fulfilment . Like riding a coracle ( round old row boat , made of slicks and skins ) . Enjoy the ride . Just maybe 'the higher life form' have their spy in this chimpanzee . Mike
