  1. I dont think we have the technology available to test this sort of think because making the senses not work is going to damage the individuals health as well and he won't be able to survive. If we, somehow, do the work in the brain itself, then we will be working on a modified brain not an ordinary hiuman brain. So I don't think there is any way of testing this sort of thing but yes philosophical point of view can be generated.
  2. I would also like to know the answer because it will help me in my biochemistry paper.
  3. I think it depends on the knife too. If it had a shiny glossy surface, then probably, it might lose all the proof but if it was rough, there are chances of at least something left within the microscopic crevices.
  4. Try Google feature of searching through the publications of various scholars. I think you can get some information in this way.
  5. A great way of explanation. However, I wonder, how would a balloon lose its elasticity.
  6. If you are concerned about the factor that cause greater increase in the breathing rate through the intervention of nervous system, then it is the concentration of carbon dioxide because oxygen doesn't have any direct influence on sensory centers of brain, It is the concentration of carbon dioxide that initiates nervous response that increases the rate of respiration.
  7. I have heard about a cockroach that the holes for breathing in are different from those that are used fro breathing out. You might also be right because there might be other species of insects having same holes for both inspiration and expiration but, not all because I am pretty much sure about the case of cockroach.
  8. I think like many other substance coming from mutant bacteria, the stuff required to make artificial blood can also come from the same source. All we need to do is to find the right type of microorganism for this. At least this can apply to the plasma portion of the blood which has many proteins and other substances in it. As far as the living cells like the white and red blood cells are concerned, I think the breaking point will be the formation of a stem cell that can live for a long amount of time if not infinitely.
  9. I have never heard of a the possibility of an ethmoid fracture with blowing of nose. If you know of any reasonable reference, please share it with me. I will love to read about it.
  10. I don't think there are different types of dopamine. If there is any difference in the action of dopamine at different locations, there might be a difference in the receptors as is the case of epinephrine which acts differently on alpha and beta receptors. I do not have much knowledge about dopamine but I think the basic principle would be the same.
  11. Please would someone elaborate, what is a romantic love and what is an unconditional love. I don't understand these terms.
  12. Everything comes at a cost. If you want to look, better, you will have to pay the price for it whether it is in terms of drinking less beer or exercising for hours.
  13. Stem cells are plunipotentiial cells whose fate is not yet decided. they have all the genes activated and can form any particular type of cells. The potential of treatment of various diseases through the use of these stem cells is high because of their ability to form any specific lineage of cells. Thus any lineage of cells that is not functioning properly can be replaced by new cells that will arise from the stem cells. There is no age concern for stem cells because except a few types, all cells rapidly divide to produce new cells. The stem cells are highly active as far as their division is concerned and every now and then new cells are produced.
  14. Excess of everything is bad. The same rule applies to vitamins. The risk is especially greater for fat soluble vitamins, the absorption process of which is extremely efficient and much more than required amount can be absorbed into the body. Thus when an overdose is taken, extra amount is absorbed and toxic effects are produced.
  15. I don't think it is correct. Most of the energy consumed by muscles is not converted into mechanical work, but heat. And during running, greater amount of heat is produced per unit distance as compared to walking.
  16. isn't there any clear answer available to the question. After reading all the posts, I didn't even come to know that the fish sleep or not? Please can anyone provide a clear answer/
  17. Sorry dear but I did not get what your question is? Can you elaborate a little.
  18. I am a medical student and I would really like this problem solved. I will try to find a solution and then let you know but if someone else has the requisite knowledge, please let us have it as well.
  19. You are right in saying that "never say never" Actually I am myself a big believer of "never say never". What I wanted to tell is that everything in the world is relative. Power and no power are also relative. Power is "power" only if there is some weak who lacks it. If all become powerful, power will no more exist. Similarly if all soldiers in the world become super soldiers, against what will you measure the "superness". So to those who are not "super", the super soldiers will obviously look powerful but to those who are themselves "super", they will just look ordinary and when everything in the world becomes "super" the super soldier will look ordinary according to the view of that time.
  20. I think of it on a different perspective. We call a super soldier the one who can easily beat his opponent and gain victory for his country. He is a master killer and no one can stand in his way. He has super reflexes, super powers, super abilities and all other super stuff. If I am right than probably you need to think about the existence of super soldiers. Why? Let me explain Technology is not limited to a single region of the world and is widespread. The world has become a global village where if for example, the wheels of a car are manufactured in China, the engine is manufactured in Germany. The point I want to make is that every country has achieved the technological advancements required to make (or potentially make) super soldiers. Now think a little. A super soldier is the one who can kill his opponent easily. Suppose country A has a super soldiers and the opponent country B also has super soldiers. Who is going to be "super" then. Obviously no one. It is the same situation of a child fighting another child. The supremacy exists only against the weak ones. Two super soldiers do not remain super. They become ordinary. I completely agree with you. The world has chosen the path to manufacture super machines instead of super humans. So it would be more realistic that we think about a super droid with numerous supreme features instead of thinking about a super human soldier with extra strong bones and extra long stamina.
  21. With great advancements in technology, everything around has changed. The way people use to get treated is also getting change slowly and steadily. There are a lot of new techniques like bone marrow transplant etc developed that can treat the untreatable diseases. A part of this advancement is the development of artificial blood. I have not heard anything about it that it has been achieved or not but at least now we have some theoretical solution of how to develop artificial blood in our minds and it will not be far when patients of diseases like thallesemia who need to replace their blood regularly will get easily treated.
  22. I think you are absolutely correct. Sometimes mothers tell such things to their children so that they should never try it.
  23. Please add something to your profile so that we can know you.

  24. Well these are cases of extreme and do not occur daily. You can fracture a bone by holding your sneeze only if you got some very weak bones. The bursting of blood vessels may occur but let me explain a point. What do you mean by holding your sneeze. You will only get your bone broken or a blood vessel ruptured if you close your nose and mouth with your hands. If you are not closing you nose and mouth through some external force you cannot hold your sneeze. Sometimes people try to stop their sneeze from coming. This cannot rupture your blood vessel of fracture your bone. So don't worry because I haven't seen anybody trying to hold his sneeze.
  25. Neurons of the nervous system are just conductive pathways for the signals. The sensory neurons convey signals towards the brain and the motor neurons carry them away from the brain. Associative neurons form the brain tissue where information is relayed and saved etc. This is the function of neurons. The generation of impulse in not the function of neurons, (though they can do it in certain conditions). You must have been hearing that human have five senses from childhood. You got to think about it. What does a sense means. What is a sensory organ. Let me explain it to you. Sensory organ of human body is the organ that converts signal of some type into electrical stimulus that can be conveyed to brain. The eye for example convertes light into electrical stimulus, the ear converts sound into electrical stimulus, the nose converts smell into electrical stimulus and so on. Each of these organs have their own separate mechanism to convert corresponding signal into electrical stimulus and if you want further details, I can provide them to you. The neurons just carry this electrical signal to brain be a wave of polarization and depolarization. So now you can understand the a person having absolutely functional neurons and nervous system can be blind because the organ which transmits light into electrical stimulus is not working. There is no stimulus for neurons to carry to the brain and in simple words, the person is true. The other possibility is also true where the eye is functioning properly but the optic nerves are damages and there is no route to carry the electrical impulse generated by light to the brain. So both a generator and a carrier are necessary. Charony, I think you have fallen in some other discussion. He is just asking from where does the starting impulse come. All that polarization and depolarization mechanism including the role of neurotransmitters works in conduction of impulse from sensory organs to brain or from brain to the effector. It has nothing to do with the absolute starting point of an impulse.
