! Moderator Note Iwonderaboutthings, Stay on topic. This is not a thread about God and the tangent to climate science is about as absurd. Any posts that bring this up again will be trashed.

Free Astronomy/Science Info sources
hypervalent_iodine replied to Astronomy's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
! Moderator Note Hi Astronomy, We don't have a media forum here because advertising is strictly prohibited in the forum rules. I have removed your links and will be closing this thread in accordance with that. -
! Moderator Note Staff have decided to keep the thread open for the time being. Members should keep previous moderator notes in this thread in mind while responding. It's worth noting that criticisms of religion are acceptable, provided that they are founded in facts and are not presented in an inflammatory manner that could be perceived as a little more than attack. In other words, keep the discussion as productive as it has been in the last few posts and play nice.

I would think that this situation is vastly more complicated than it being a result of simply one or the other. Genetic influences would certainly be a contributing factor for some cases of childhood obesity (possibly even most cases), but my guess is that it would be unlikely for genetics to be the sole cause. This study notes that there are genetic factors contributing to the issue, but that the findings account for a very small percentage (~ 2%) of observed heritability of childhood obesity (this article explains it in simpler terms). It's worth noting, however, that the low percentage most likely indicates the fact that we don't yet have a complete picture of obesity-related genes. There is another study I found that looked at adoptive children and compared their weight class to the wieght classes of their adoptive parents and to their biological parents. The findings there seem to indicate a strong relationship between the weight classes of adoptive children and their biological parents, but not between the children and their adoptive parents. I didn't have a chance to read it, but I did also find a rather large (though possibly dated) review that you might like to read.

What should be my topic for EVS project
hypervalent_iodine replied to Rajnish Kaushik's topic in Homework Help
Firstly, what is an evs project? Secondly, what kind of things are you interested in doing a project on? -
Preventing Same IP's from signing up
hypervalent_iodine replied to Unity+'s topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
That, and a lot of the time the IP's don't match at all; they might fall within the same range or they might be completely different. It's actually not that common for a member to create a sock puppet that has an exact IP match to their original account. IP's are only a portion of what we look at to determine sock-puppetry and usually we can only look to see if they resolve to the same place. Often it's a combination of that, posting style / habits, profile information and other tidbits of personal information that they leak into the forum that lets us know if we're dealing with a sock-puppet or not. I think we do a pretty good job of finding them, though admittedly it sometimes takes a month or so for it to click. Moral of the story is that unfortunately, specific IP bans won't help us very much and banning IP ranges is unfair on others who use an IP in the same range. -
! Moderator Note decraig, if you think that imatfaal is incorrect, address exactly where it is that his information falls short. Do not simply wave off the post by insulting his intelligence or simply saying that is nonsense - especially when it doesn't actually appear to be nonsense at all. Also, if you are going to report someone for apparently insulting you - though I truly don't see it - perhaps you should try and and avoid the same behavior? Lastly, this thread is getting tiresome and I think people are quickly losing patience with your inability to consider the information that is actually out there refuting your ideas. People have linked you papers and they have provided you with good information. You cannot keep ignoring them because you don't like it or you don't have access to the papers that people have linked you and if you do, then expect this to be closed (as I have already warned you).

Champagne bubble cosmology vs Big Bang (split)
hypervalent_iodine replied to kristalris's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note ACG52 and kristalris, please try and stay respectful of one another. ACG52, if you don't have anything productive to say, just don't post. Because biologists aren't scientists? -
! Moderator Note Try and stay on topic, please.

Energy source: evaporation - condensation
hypervalent_iodine replied to Erik2014's topic in Speculations
Could you possibly have a go at summarizing your document in the thread? -
! Moderator Note Let's try and steer clean of the racist slurs and try and stick to quantifiable facts. Starting with a way to measure levels of violence would probably be a good start. SlavicWolf, this is especially directed to you. Claiming that Christianity is more peaceful because Jesus was a good guy is a ridiculous and rather meaningless assertion in the context of this thread and you'd do well to avoid it in the future. Do not respond to this mod note in-thread.

! Moderator Note Staff have decided to keep this nonsense on lock down.

Rajnish, try doing some work for yourself. People have given you some great advice in this thread and in your related one, so please go back and read them all and put in some effort of your own.

Champagne bubble cosmology vs Big Bang (split)
hypervalent_iodine replied to kristalris's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note Staff have removed a number of posts from this thread into this one as they had started to go a bit off topic. kristalris, this hijack began with you and it would be much appreciated if you could refrain from this in the future. To everyone, please keep the bubble cosmology stuff out of the other thread from here on and contain the conversation to this one. -
! Moderator Note Rajnish, it's a bit rich for someone who seems to struggle so much with using Google to be posting these sorts of links in threads. It stops. If you can't read the questions being asked or contribute an actual answer, please refrain from posting.

! Moderator Note Since hoola has decided to delete their OP, I'm closing this.

Thread Hijack - A lingual theory of everything
hypervalent_iodine replied to LittleBoPeep's topic in Trash Can
! Moderator Note LittleBoPeep, you don't get to hijack other threads with your speculations and. -
! Moderator Note Hi hoola, Since this doesn't really attempt to discuss philosophy, I am moving it to the Lounge. If you have an issue with this, please feel free to raise your concerns via PM.
-
! Moderator Note Okay, LittleBoPeep, it is clear that you have no intention of making sense here. I am closing this for moderaor review. Please do not try and start a new thread on this topic in the meantime.

For starters, your equation is wrong, though I imagine this is a typo. Secondly, this does not follow. Have a look at the equation again. Kb is high when when the relative concentrations of [A+][OH-] is higher than , which means that the more the base is able to dissociate, the higher the Kb and the stronger it is.

Our methods are different, but I think the result is the same. I don't write speeches either; I instead speak as I naturally would while going through my slides so that I don't sound rehearsed, even after hours of going over and over it. I can ramble a lot - especially if I find what I'm talking about to be interesting - so it's better for me not to leave that aspect of it too much to chance.

What additives are in isopropyl alcohol (70%)
hypervalent_iodine replied to Elite Engineer's topic in Organic Chemistry
I'm not sure how other labs do it, but all of the distillations I've ever done have used greased ground glass joints, no rubber seals required. I suspect Knumbnuts is right and it's the rubber that's giving you the green stuff. -
Would you be able to summarise your work in the thread for us?
