  1. I think the proportion of fundamentalist Christians would vary depending on where you are in the world. In Western Europe for example, I suspect most Christians are comfortable with evolution and other such teachings of science (or these are my vague recollections of the statistics). The southern states of the US would likely be a different story. In any event, the black and white answer to your question is that of course one may be a theist and not a creationist; this is indeed true for a great many people.
  2. I'll do you one better and move the whole lot to the trash.
  3. ! Moderator Note Dekan, you may want to review rule 1c. of the forum rules. In short, ditch the sexist attitude.
  4. You still haven't explained how one single data point means that crime has worsened considerably since 1995, when the general trend is quite clearly the reverse. Really? Seems to me like you're blaming an increase in crime on it to me. What's your point? No one in this thread has tried to say that crime in SA isn't bad. I am unsure why you are spending so much time trying to convince us of that single fact when it is clear that no one has disagreed with you on it. What we are saying is that crime rates have dropped since 1995, since that was the actual claim you made in reference to capital punishment. You still haven't been able to make a compelling case in counter to the statistics you have been shown and your anecdote, while tragic, is irrelevant to this thread.
  5. You said this: It's reasonable to assume that you were implying a relationship between the two events (even if you can't actually show that crime has 'worsened unimaginably'), especially when you follow it up with this: It's easy to see why people might take that to mean that you think capital punishment reduces crime.
  6. The data in table appears to reflect official data and while their citation for that is dead, the first link that I provided and you glossed over is not. It confirms the trend in the wiki article. As do the other links I provided. Where are your statistics again? Yes, crime is bad in SA. I'm not trying to deny that. However, there are plenty of countries that have higher murder rates than the US and there are even plenty that have higher rates than SA. I don't see what relevance that has to this argument if you're not trying to compare them concurrently with the use of the death penalty.
  7. Exactly which crime statistics are you referencing? Capital punishment was abolished in SA in 1995 and a cursory glance at violent crime statistics shows a pretty steady decline since that time. Do you have any citations to support your claim? http://www.saps.gov.za/statistics/reports/crimestats/2013/downloads/police_station_figures_per_province.xls http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_South_Africa#Murder Edit: I'm also not sure why you're using the US as a comparison. The existence of the death penalty varies from state to state and as these tables show, states that do not use capital punishment have, on average, lower murder rates: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/murder-rates-nationally-and-state http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/deterrence-states-without-death-penalty-have-had-consistently-lower-murder-rates

      It's been a real struggle.

  9. Alright, well you should know that the mass of a compound is the sum of the mass of its components. NaCl, for example has a molar mass of 58.45 g / mol, of which 35.45 g / mol is Cl and 23 g / mol comes from the Na. We can also express these values as a percentage of the total mass (this is the mass %) and use those numbers to work out the mass of each component of a compound in a given sample. For example: Does that make sense? See if you can try that approach with your question, or otherwise I can show you how to do it using number of moles and stoicheometric ratios.
  10. You came to the internet to hide from sour ludicrosity? I don't mean to alarm you, but I think you're doing it wrong.
  11. ! Moderator Note Rajnish, do not reply to moderator notes in threads. It derails them. You may PM staff if you have a question. To answer you, though, no you may not.
  12. ! Moderator Note Rajnish, please do not hijack other threads to advertise your own. I have removed your link. Do not reply to this mod note.
  13. You can't. Only staff are able to do this and as a general rule, we don't do it.
  14. Iron can have a 3+ oxidation state as well. You've certainly whittled down your choices by looking at the charge, but you will need to now work out the molar mass of M to figure out exactly what it is. Since you know the oxidation state of M, you should be able to figure out how many chloride ions it bonds to. Knowing that 1 g of M combines with 3.9 g of chlorine and knowing the ratio of Cl:M, you should be able to figure out 1.) how many moles of M are in the 1 g and therefore, 2.) the molar mass of M.
  15. You can do it a couple of ways, but the simplest is probably by looking at the mass percentage of silver in AgO. Are you familiar with how to do this?
  16. My sisters often call me bro, but they call me lots of other things I wouldn't want random people on the internet calling me. The idea of being labelled an elder member offends me even more than your overuse of bro does. Anyway, imatfaal had it coming. You should have seen the barren state of the staff kitchen while he was supposed to be on duty. If there's one thing you really don't mess with here, it's our cheesenip supply.
  17. It has to do with the stability of the conjugate base and the s character of the terminal alkyne relative to other hydrocarbons. An sp hydridised carbon is said to have 50% character (compared to 33% for sp2 and 25% for sp3), which means that the sp orbital is closer to the nucleus where the electron pair in the orbital experienced more of a stabilising effect. Compared to the conjugate base of an alkene or an alkane, that of an alkyne is much more stable (and by quite large orders of magnitude if you look at their pKa's), making it more acidic. Nitrogenous bases, which are quite strong bases, are typically used to deprotonate alkynes. That should tell you that the conjugate acid of a nitrogenous base would typically be less acidic than that of a terminal alkyne and indeed, I'm pretty sure the pKa's fall between the ranges for alkynes and alkenes.

  19. http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/product/sigma/i0398?lang=en&region=AU According to that, the reagent grade stuff contains water, some carbonyls from oxidation and some non-descript acid or base. And sorry, I neglected read the OP until just now. I was more talking about the stuff that you buy directly rather than the end product of your distillation. Not sure what it could be, though it doesn't sound like an additive to the isopropynol; especially if you've collected it in noticeable amounts. It's possibly a byproduct that's come about as a result of the distillation (depends on how you distilled it, however), though the green colour is odd. Otherwise, I guess it's some other impurity that's maybe reacted with the isopropanol. Is it water soluble at all?
  20. It almost certainly will contain stabilizers as well.
  21. ! Moderator Note Could you please stop calling people bro? It's not really against the rules, but damn is it annoying.
  22. Why didn't you do that 2 pages ago? Or did you actually just expect people to do your homework for you?
  23. That you should be answering this question yourself. We are here to help you, Rajnish, but we won't do your work for you.
  24. ! Moderator Note Hi Mr. Indigo, Members are prohibited from making posts or threads for the purpose of advertising. Please keep this in mind in future.
  25. ! Moderator Note overtone, was my modnote truly that hard to figure out? Stop derailing this thread. Your post has gone to the trash, FYI. If this keeps up, do not think we won't suspend you.
