All you've managed to do thus far is posit baseless speculation, claimed statistics without references and offhandedly ignored the counter-evidence provided to you by others with a simple, 'that's obviously wrong', with no real explanation as to why. If you want us to believe you, you'll need to convince us. You'll need to provide evidence to back up your claims and you'll need to have reasonable and logical explanations for any counter points and questions asked of you. If you can't do that, I'll be closing this thread.
  4. Hf of N2 and O2 is 0. You will probably need to remember that. The delta symbol in this means that you are looking for the difference. So, how do you think you could calculate the difference of the heats of formation of a reaction, given that you know have the Hf values for each of its components?
  5. The first question you need to ask yourself is what [math]\Delta[/math] Hf actually means; more specifically, what does the use of the delta symbol signify? Secondly, what you know about the heats of formation for oxygen and nitrogen gas?
  6. I disagree. Stating that synthetic chemistry is simply the science of creating new substances completely ignores the vast majority of what synthetic chemistry actually sets out to achieve and understand. It is true that is provides a means to construct industrially/medically relevant substances or novel substances, but that is more of a means to an end (and to grant money) than the ultimate objective (usually). A purely synthetic chemist seeks more to provide a mechanistic description for a reaction and develop novel reactions or other processes that provide access to various types of compounds. These sorts of studies are quite often culminated in natural product synthesis, which will often provide extremely challenging motifs that lead to new discoveries. From the perspective of a synthetic organic chemist, the actual substances that you make and the application of those substances is second and a distance third respectively to the development of the reactions and techniques that get you there. As to the OP, there isn't much I can say that hasn't been said in this thread. I think ajb puts it quite eloquently.

  8. You get mummified remains under the right conditions (see: Tarim mummies), or alternatively I would guess that the constantly moving sand will erode the bones. You can get natural mummification in a variety of extreme conditions, such as the extreme cold and in extremely saline environments.

  16. Well what do you think might happen? If I react HCl (hydrochloric acid) and NaOH (sodium hydroxide), what do you think will be produced? I suppose it's also worth asking if you know what a double displacement reaction is?
  17. Well, that depends entirely on what kid of chemical reactions you're learning. Since this is grade 8, I'm assuming you're not learning anything terribly advanced, but it would nevertheless be of some help if you could perhaps give an example of what it is you're learning. I can't really help you if I don't know where to direct my assistance.

What to revise for is really not something we can properly answer without knowing your course content, particularly since a majority of people here aren't from Australia (I'm assuming by your user name that you are). I'm assuming you have notes from class? My advice would be to go through those and see what concepts you can list under each of the headings you gave in the OP and study those. Alternatively (or in addition), go to your teacher and ask what things you should focus your studies on. They're the ones who set the exam, so they'll know better than anyone here what you need to study.
  19. I don't know if guarded is completely true, or at least not for me. I'm on IRC fairly regularly and it's rare that I wouldn't ask a question or not be forthcoming to other people there (or even here, for that matter). One quick look at my profile here will tell you a fair bit about where I live, what I do and what I look like. I don't often bring that information into a thread unless it's asked for (I'm often mistaken for being an older male on this forum), but that is not the same as being guarded. On the other end of things, most of my friends know that I use this website and that I'm a staff member here. Schrodinger's hat, for instance, is a friend of mine from uni who joined last year after I asked him for some help for someone in IRC (who later made a thread) wanting to know about a mystery non-Newtonian fluid I'd forgotten the name of.

  22. Of course you can; the more the merrier. Also, you'll find that teaching to others is an excellent way to learn a subject. I would absolutely encourage you to help out in the homework questions, etc., since I know it would help you with your own studies.

  24. As with most of the others, I'm much more formal here than I am in my day to day dealings IRL. In fact, my writing is in general more formal than I am in person. Other than that I tend to think I'm true to myself.
