  1. Nope. Can you identify the functional group?
  2. What do you think?
  3. ...what?
  4. ! Moderator Note I'm sorry, but this isn't a place for soap boxing. If you have something you wish to actually discuss, please open another thread with your questions / points for discussion clearly and concisely laid out. No one wants to read a wall of text.
  5. And what about bond order?
  6. Could you tell us what you know and where you are stuck?
  7. Conway has been banned following yet another thread that devolved into abuse when his ideas came into question.
  8. Also, just as an additional note. An MSDS is generally something you should be reading prior to handling a chemical, not after. You should be performing some sort of risk assessment so you are aware of the dangers, and know how to prevent and handle any sort of spills or accidents. As CharonY mentions, this really is classed as an official incident, and needs to be reported and paperwork filled out by the appropriate channels.
  9. Were you not wearing goggles? Prevention is always better than cure. If you're helping in the lab, better be sure you're 1. allowed to be there and 2. are complying with occupational health and safety rules. Why would the toxicology part of the MSDS not be what you are interested in? Regarding your medical question, go back to your doctor. We don't give that sort of advice here.
  10. Adding another one to this list, Dubbelosix has been banned as the latest of so many Graviphoton sock puppets.
  11. Could be clearer about which structures you mean? Diastereomers are compounds that differ in some but not all of their stereocentres, whereas enantiomers differ in all of them. So, if you had a pair of compounds that were (R)(R)(S) and (S)(S)(R), these would be enantiomers. However, the same compound with (R)(S)(R) centres would be a diastereomer of both of them.
  12. I take it that we are to assume there is only one addition in this example? Addition of HX to alkynes can give single or double addition products, but stereochemistry only applies to the former case. You are correct that the carbocation in theory would provide no facial preference for addition of the bromide ion. However, you need to consider the stability of the products that form, as that can often determine selectivity. Which isomer do you think is more stable, and which do you think would therefore form preferentially?
  13. ! Moderator Note Thread split from here. Dubbelosix, please take note of the mod note I posted in that thread.
  14. ! Moderator Note Dubbelosix, Despite the air of superiority you seem to post with, it seems clear based on the number of people with actual degrees in physics that disagree with you that the confusion here is with you, not them. I would ask that you stop polluting this thread with your (as yet) unsupported ideas, as the question posed by the OP was asked in good faith seeking answers offered by mainstream, accepted science. If you wish to argue your points further, I suggest opening another thread. However, if you intend to do this, you must keep the forum rules in mind. That is, we will not accept you constantly shifting the burden of evidence / proof to other people when it is you who is coming up with the stuff not supported by accepted physics. We also will not accept you constantly shifting the goal posts. DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MOD NOTE WITHIN THIS THREAD. Please report the post or PM a member of staff if you disagree. Any further posts in this thread that do not actively seek to answer the OP within the bounds of what physics currently holds to be true in this context will be removed, and you will receive an official warning. ! Moderator Note On reflection, it didn't seem fair that the OP should have several posts essentially ignored while others engaged in debate. While on topic, the OP has stated they are not an expert, and IMO this makes the thread quite confusing from their perspective. As such, I have split every single post not by the OP into a new thread to give this one an opportunity to provide some actual clarity for them. You may direct the previous conversation to the new thread.
  15. We did used to be able to cap them separately, but for whatever reason that feature seems to have disappeared in one of the updates. Or I can't find it.
  16. We changed the limit to 10/day, so perhaps you reached that? Looking at it, it seems that it's limited the reactions per day total, which includes both positive and negative rep. You have made exactly 10 reactions in the last 24 hours, so my money is on that being the problem.
  17. Randolphin has been suspended until Christmas Day for incessant preaching.
  18. See a doctor. This isn't a place for seeking medical advice.
  19. What on Earth does sentencing of false sexual assault allegations have to do with this topic? He explicitly admitted that he exploited his power over these women, and that everything they said was true.
  20. Your question isn't super clear to me either. Personally, I have a pretty good idea of what groups within my school and other institutes on campus have available equipment wise. However, if I have a particular question that I am unsure of how to answer or I need a piece of equipment and I don't immediately know where to locate it (or if I have access to it), I would first get in touch with my supervisor. He has a much wider network than I do, and would likely know where to go and who to contact. There's also the option of exploiting other contacts of your own (technicians, for example). Industry reps / application specialists are also a good source of knowledge on who has what around the area. Things as basic as glassware - unique pieces or otherwise - are pretty easily dealt with for me, as we have a very good in-house glass blower in my building.
  21. Just so you don't think this has been forgotten - admin are still aware of the issue, and are actively trying to figure it out. So far a solution has eluded us, but there are a few things left to try out.
  22. ! Moderator Note I suggest you actually read the mod notes we post if you want to have any threads that remain open. For example: ! Moderator Note I don't see where you have attempted to rectify this at all. Moreover, I see very little substantive difference between this thread and the thread the above note was quoted from. As such, this is closed, and you are not permitted to reopen it.
  23. Care to explain what you're talking about?
  24. Neat idea for an experiment. I don't have anything much to add to John Cuther's post. As he says, make sure you test your experiment first.
  25. I can't acccess the link you posted. It's important to consider context and quantities when reading MSDS's. Phenolthalein is perfectly safe for most purposes (you're only uses drops at a time), just don't go drinking it by the cup full or pouring it all over people. I don't know what the experiment is you want to perform, but you may still want to invest in PPE for the kids if you don't have some available. Depends on what you're doing, but at least gloves and safety glasses and some sort of apron or lab coat. That will help mitigate any risk.
