  1. Yep, that's about right. Just remember to take extreme caution using conc H2SO4, and add the acid to the water (never the other way around).
  2. I realise this is merely anecdote, but I did find the coincidence rather striking when the day I stopped getting told I was stupid, immature and uneducated (in the more mild examples) by random people on this forum was the same day I removed my gender from my profile here. Women in general do not tend to participate in these sorts of fora, nor do they tend to engage in online debate so much as men tend to. Perhaps sexism is not so explicit in STEM, but I do think it's hard for you to really grasp the reality of the situation without being in the shoes of someone who lives it. I've been sexually harassed in previous jobs, and even with all my complaints to management about the person in question, and the support of the people who worked directly with me, putting an unlocked door on my work space was all that was ever done to stop the guy. He later got a promotion, and I transferred to another area. In my last job, at a meeting with a visiting collaborator in which I was the only female (of about 10-12 people), I was also the only person whose introduction ended in a five minute investigation into my background and credentials, and the only person who was asked to justify my position on the team. I was exactly as qualified as anyone else there with my job title. No one is outright telling women to get out of STEM I'm sure, but we sure as hell aren't made to feel entirely welcome. As for the difference in the number of women in an area like physics: it would be acceptable if it weren't so symptomatic of a larger cultural issue. Raider, the disparity in gender participation in STEM fields is not so apparent at your level of education as it is later on down the academic path. There are many studies on this, which you might find interesting to look up. I will look these up myself tomorrow if you're interested.
  3. This is true, but not so important if the water is constantly running, and even less so if it is chilled. When doing reactions under reflux, you still use the same approach, yet the warmest part in this set up would be the bottom where the water is coming in. The reason is really just because it's difficult to fill the reservoir up if you go from top to bottom.
  4. If you put it at the top, you tend to get a persistent air pocket and the condenser never really fills with water. Not the case if you have it going in from the bottom. Edit: the explanation for that is simply gravity, by the way. Going in from the top, the water just falls straight down to the outlet and you get the air gap / pocket at the top end. From the bottom the water has to fill up the condenser before it reaches the outlet, so no air bubble. This is also true when working with reflux condensers.
  5. ! Moderator Note quickquestion, It would be best if you kept your own pet ideas about aether in your own thread, so as to avoid confusion.
  6. ! Moderator Note Split from here. A small request: the moderating team here are busy people with busy lives, and it would be very much appreciated if members didn't wantonly make extra work for us. If you sense that you are about to go on a tangent that is not in keeping with the topic of the thread you are posting in, please start a new thread. Dragging the one you are in off topic is against the forum rules. Moreover, where a split is the best course of action, it requires a decent amount of time by us in order to figure out exactly which posts to split, select the posts, split them, and add notes in the respective threads alerting members of what was done. You're smart people, you can figure out when something is off topic or not. Thanks in advance. On that note, I was going to split all the talk about fetishes, but I couldn't figure out a good way to do it that would allow for continued discussion (it didn't seem like there was anything of substance in the tangent regarding fetishes). If there is something you wish to discuss that isn't specifically about the affect of porn, then I would recommend a new thread.
  7. ! Moderator Note Here's a cool idea: if you think something is off-topic, report it and let us handle it.
  8. ! Moderator Note Locked, as per request.
  9. ! Moderator Note Split from here. I have put this in General Philosophy, for lack of a better home. I'm open to suggestions, if anyone has a better fit. Please report the post if so.
  10. ! Moderator Note Just because this one seems to have been missed. This is not the first time you have made posts that aim to do nothing more than insult other members and add zero intelligent discourse into the discussion. This is against forum rules, and since you are a repeat offender of this, I feel that I should note that continued infractions will lead to further action.
  11. No. Q in that equation is the same thing, but I don't mean that equation. It is calculated in exactly the same way as K, but it does not matter if the concentrations of each species is at equilibrium. The point of the calculation is to determine whether or not Q = K, and thus whether or not the system is at equilibrium. Whether or not Q is less than, greater than, or equal to K will tell you if it's at equilibrium, or if not, which direction it will go to reach equilibrium.
  12. Are you familiar with calculating reaction quotients (Q)?
  13. ...the periodic table is quite a bit more useful / informative than a random and inherently incomplete list of compounds by smell. Also worth noting for the OP that some chemicals that have what would usually be called very distinctive smells can be either not detected or have a completely different smell depending on the person. I can't detect pyridine very well, but I can tell you in a second the identity of many organic solvents by smell. I have another friend who thinks some thiols smell quite pleasant (like gummy bears was his description), whereas most sane people can't stand the odours they give off. Many chemicals also have smells that I would say are very difficult to describe. I've worked with lachrymatory agents extensively in the past, and their smells are very unique, though I could not honestly think of how to explain what it's like. I guess my closest description for those (3- and 4-methoxybenzyl halides) would be, smells like pain and crying, which probably isn't very helpful.
  14. There are people working extensively in this area. Both in terms of efficiently and cheaply converting cellulose to glucose, and development of biofuels. Don't have any links as I'm in my phone, but I'm sure you can look it up on Google scholar. I worked at an institute a few years ago that focussed on this as one of their research themes alongside the sugar industry in Australia. Perhaps look up the work of Bill Doherty from QUT, Australia (http://staff.qut.edu.au/staff/dohertyw/).
  15. You would be correct if the question stated 1 mole, but it didn't. It asked for how much NaI is required when 0.1 mL reacts of each liquid, hence the power should be to the -4. 0.1mL x1.27gm/ml x 1mole/137.02g bromobutane x 1moleNaI/Bromobutane=9.268 x 10^-4 NaI mole How's that? I see that this is a limiting reagent problem. hypervalent_iodine, Can you check the above problems? Here is one more : How many moles of NAI if using 2ml of 18% sodium Iodide? My answer: 2mL x 18grams/100mL x 1mole/150gram = 0.0024 mole But don't you have to multiply by 0.1mL the volume of the reagent? How many moles of NaI are need to react with 0.10mL of chlorobutane/bromobutane? Hence 10^-4 power You are correct. StudioT didn't account for the correct volume. Will have to check your other question in a bit. Edit: I get the same answer as you do for your other question as well. Just be careful of the molar masses you use. Rounding errors carry through when you do larger calculations, and can make your final answer out by enough for you to lose marks.
  16. Of course all members, including staff, are subject to forum rules. I'm a little confused as to what prompted that statement, anyway. It has absolutely no relevance to the notice posted by imatfaal. Staff do occasionally notice and reverse persistent rep system abuse (as in, one person seemingly going out of their way to up or down vote a particular person or group of people), and in either direction. It's not really that common, however. Anything else is up to members to resolve, if they see fit. There are numerous threads on this if you wish to discuss it further.
  17. To elaborate a little on what DrP is saying, if you come to a situation where you have a decimal, it is acceptable to just multiply everything out by some factor to make them all whole numbers. The exception is in combustion reactions, which are routinely written with decimals.
  18. Moo has become too good for us now she's got a real job. Typical. In that case, you missed some.
  19. Unless Phi is hiding something, I'm pretty sure I'm the only female mod active.
  20. ! Moderator Note Following from my last post. The behaviour of members in this thread is embarrassing. Regardless of self-aggrandising nature of the OP (warranted or otherwise), the subsequent posts by people here abusing his intelligence and ganging up on him are absolutely not acceptable. I am honestly at a loss at the fact that I have to tell grown adults not to bully other grown adults, but I guess that's the position I'm in. This thread is to remain closed. Discussions about chess and IQ may be found in other currently active threads on this forum. Please refer to those if you wish to continue what little discussion actually occurred in this thread.
  21. ! Moderator Note David Moore, you need to stop with the intellectual dishonesty. Stop abusing the other members here and engage in actual discussion. Have you provided any links yet to support your claims? I don't see them. Start with that and please careful outline your position so we can better understand where you're coming from. You don't get to use, 'I can't figure it out,' as an excuse. Copy-pasting links is really not a difficult ask.
  22. Yes, I have to apply for an ESTA to visit the US. It is very painless, and valid for 3 years, so I'm certainly not complaining. I also don't have to apply for anything to visit parts of the EU as far as I know. That, or I very illegally stayed in France for 3 weeks in December.
  23. You don't need concentration. It is assumed based on the question that the compounds are liquids. Are you familiar with density?
  24. What do you think? Please show some attempt to this question so we can better help you.
