  1. davidelkins has been banned after a very long time in the MQ and a lot of unapproved, nonsensical posts.
  2. It's worth noting that the bake sale was very much a minor event amongst a number of lectures, debates, etc., that were held during feminist week at UQ, and it got blown way out of proportion. The concerning take away from it all was not the event itself, but the ironic and vitriolic reaction to it.
  3. At a guess, the amount of biomass required to make usable amounts would be large and extracting it pure would be energy intensive.
  4. I think you are reading something into the OP that frankly, wasn't in the OP. Lyudmilascience did not frame the discussion as being about men's issues, it was framed explicitly as an issue about feminism in the media, and how women have all the "political rights" they fought for, etc. You are correct that they did not say they were against feminism, just the brand that preaches hate and for the rights of women to supersede those of men (i.e. not equal treatment). It seemed to me, and apparently to others, that the OP thought this particular type of feminist (I would not call those people feminists) was the only one represented in the media, that gender pay gaps were not real, that people are going along with feminism to protect their image, and so on. That isn't an argument for men's rights, in an argument against feminism. It's not the same thing. Furthermore, I am baffled at the insistence of people such as yourself that conversations about female rights and feminism has to come at the cost of men's rights. Why is it that any time someone wants to talk about these things, the people having the conversation get accused of being sexist against men because they weren't also discussing the situations in which men are discriminated against? You don't have to talk about these issues at the same time to recognise them both as being issues that need addressing.
  5. Well, what functional groups have you started with and what function group have you made? What sort of reactions do you know of that can achieve that?
  6. It was based on colour, gender, and what field you were studying towards. White men paid $1, where a black female law student did not (for example). That's what started it. I don't know where you get the idea that things are heading in a direction where men suddenly have less rights etc., than women. What is your evidence for that? Because all the evidence I've seen suggests we aren't even on an equal footing with men by most measures, let alone surpassing them. You are incorrect to say that less women are interested or go into science. I can't remember the exact numbers, but generally, there are more or equal numbers of women going into STEM degrees as there are men. Where things fall apart is during and after graduate school, where suddenly, we have more men. This is something that has been discussed here a few times. Do women also spew vile on the web? Probably some do, but you'd have to be kidding yourself if you're suggesting that there are anywhere near as many. You should be equally condemned regardless of gender. However, when speaking of the issue in general terms, this is undoubtedly a male dominated problem. Why speak of it in any other way?
  7. There's not a lot I can say here that smarter people than me haven't already said more eloquently. Instead, I would encourage the OP to read this article, about an event at my university that recently made headlines. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/apr/06/the-feminist-cupcake-sale-that-led-us-into-the-darkest-depths-of-gender-inequality
  8. ! Moderator Note Once again, I have split the last spate of posts into the trash. A reminder to all members to keep this on topic. That means, if someone attempts to re-hijack this thread, please just report it. Replying and thereby continuing to drag a thread off topic is not appreciated.
  9. Do you want it to burn away or evaporate? How much heat is a lot of heat? What purpose do you have in mind for the material?
  10. ! Moderator Note schmengie, Stop dragging this thread off topic. I have removed the last lot of posts. If you continue to hijack threads, you will be suspended from posting. If other members could simply report OT posts, it would be appreciated.
  11. ! Moderator Note schmengie, stop. You don't get to hijack someone's else thread with your own nonsensical ideas. You have your own thread(s). Stick to them. Splitting OT posts to the trash.
  12. ! Moderator Note Alright, this ends here. Your original topic was asking what science was, not, 'let me list a bunch of seemingly random examples from the field of engineering.' The difference has been explained to you, but you insist on dragging this thread down completely unrelated paths regardless. This thread is closed, and it is not being reopened. For once, please open a thread with a coherent and clearly defined topic, and stick to it. It would make all of our lives and interactions much more pleasant.
  13. ! Moderator Note Stop the bickering. John, there's no need for such hostile remarks, and Sensei, bringing up arguments from old threads does nothing to help your case. If you are unhappy with a remark from another member, report it. You've been here long enough to know how that works, so you have no excuse for exacerbating the issue with your own suite of belligerent comments. Let's stick to the science and leave the personal issues out of it, please.
  14. I believe they observed the E isomer with some of their catalysts.
  15. Well, it's hard to go past a Hoveyda / Schrock paper. I believe some of those catalysts have previously been used for other types of Z selective CM type reactions. In fact, the Mo based ones were some of the earlier examples, and IIRC are used industrially for certain polymerizations. It's interesting that those would work better in these systems than the newer Grubbs variety.
  16. ! Moderator Note As mentioned, this is not a place for personal medical advice. Thread closed.
  17. You can see them, they're just written in a different way. You could also draw the same molecule in the following ways and it would be the same thing: The reason we don't often write in every atom and bond is that, as you can probably see, it gets messy and convoluted.
  18. Well, you are right that most people now assume I'm male. However, I should point out that until about 2 years ago, I had a picture of myself on my profile and listed both my gender and age. I removed all of those because of the number of PM's that I received that mocked me, belittled my opinions and / or knowledge, or were just plain creepy. These were explicitly tied to either my age or gender, sometimes both. I got sick of it, got rid of it, and I haven't received anything quite so offensive since. I would guess that most of my rep came from before I removed them, but I would assume / hope that is just because I don't post as much anymore. Can we also stop bringing this back to 'her'? I made my jest in general terms in response to the root cause of all these new avatars, there's no need to revisit that ridiculous witch hunt.
  19. Briefly, I would venture that it's impossible to say. Genetics plays a large role in some traits, and I don't think we know enough about the brain or how some behaviours develop / manifest to even know what 'perfect conditions' are (never mind the fact that such conditions would surely be unique to each person).
  20. I'm only just noticing these new posts and I am feeling a little left out with my 5 year old avatar. Must be distracted by all those extra up votes I keep getting because of my vagina.
  21. ! Moderator Note Mike, enough of the nonsense. Stick to the topic that you yourself outlined in the OP or this will be closed. As a side note, staff have really had enough of having to warn you on these points.
  22. ! Moderator Note Let's stick to the more general topic of the OP and not get bogged down in the specifics of a particular thread.
  23. ! Moderator Note Stop trying to reintroduce closed topics. You have 3 threads on this topic, and in none of those were you even remotely capable of holding honest debate. This is not your blog; stop using it as such.
  24. Yes, thank you for spotting it. I was writing from a new phone and kept making the same typo without realising it.
