Ouch, too slow. Edit: for the name, you're mostly correct, but remember that for esters you should separate the first part of the name from the -oate part with a space rather than a hyphen. So, methyl 4-cyclopentyl-3-methylbut-3-enoate (or...methyl-3-butenoate)

It's two reactions: acid catalysed ester hydrolysis and addition across a double bond. The acid protonates the carbonyl oxygen, which helps to promote nucelophilic attack of water at the carbonyl carbon and eventual expulsion of MeOH (note: it is not the methyl group that is leaving, but the whole -OMe component). And example mechanism I stole from http://osxs.ch.liv.ac.uk/java/Nucleophilic%20substitution%20at%20the%20carbonyl%20group%20-%20Acid-catalysed%20ester%20hydrolysis%20and%20transesterification.html

! Moderator Note Kramer, your attempt to circle into discussions you've already had in other threads is not appreciated. Your original question has been asked and answered. The discussion about matter/antimatter, etc., has been discussed elsewhere and you don't get to have multiple threads on it. This thread is closed. And for the love of everything, learn how to use the quote function

! Moderator Note No. Overtone, we've been here before and you know our stance with you on this. Unless the discussion is specifically questioning health effects of GMO's, it is off topic.

! Moderator Note Some time around page 2 or 3, this thread started going a little too far down a few rabbit holes. - Starlarvae, you have your own threads to discuss your ideas. Don't hijack others. Shortly after I post this, I will be splitting all of your posts in this thread (and their replies) somewhere else (tbd). - The rest of this discussion seems to be dominated by overtone trying to tell people who work in or close to evolutionary biology how evolutionary biology works. I will be splitting these posts as well (and locking it pending review), since the conversation has become so focussed on specific points as to be a separate issue to the one(s) the OP wanted to discuss. Edit: two new threads are found here - http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/86743-stochastic-events-and-natural-selection-split-thread/and http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/86744-starlarvaes-thread-hijack-from-does-evolution-follow-the-scientific-method-if-so-how/ I am closing this thread also, pending review.

Theory of Quantum Gravity & Photon Production
hypervalent_iodine replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note Aaaaannnnndd, we're done here. Thread closed and Mike, please don't message me to ask for it to be reopened. The answer is no. -
Honestly, I'm not sure why you would be worrying about +1 states. The only transition metal to my knowledge that would really adopt that state is copper and it only has 1 4s electron. As a theoretical exercise, I think it would depend on the metal as to whether you'd take out all of the s electrons and move the left over into the d orbitals. For instance, I'm not sure Mn+ would prefer [Ar]3d6 over [Ar]4s1 3d5. Similarly, you shouldn't need to worry about something like Ce+1. It seems unlikely that it would exist. Most lanthanides will happily sit in the III state, though sometimes as the less stable II or in other cases, as IV (but never V). Are you actually being asked questions on these sorts of ions or are these just your own queries?

! Moderator Note Can we please drop the, 'it was a miracle,' rhetoric? You've asked for mistakes in the bible, you can't then counter the ones brought up by claiming magic.

! Moderator Note This is a discussion forum, not a soap box. Next time you open a thread, please try and offer some points for discussion. You may also want to avoid the big wall of text strategy.

Multiverses, wow that's big!
hypervalent_iodine replied to mpmcd101's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
! Moderator Note I moved your other posts in the old thread and the replies to a new one, so this is closed. -
! Moderator Note mpmcd101, I have moved your post into its own thread on account of how old the one you posted in was and because you were introducing your own speculations. Please take a moment to review the rules of this part of the forum (here: http://www.scienceforums.net/index.php?app=forums&module=forums§ion=rules&f=29)

! Moderator Note We don't allow members to use this site for advertising. I am removing your links and closing the thread. Please keep this in mind for future.

The first step before figuring out stereochemistry with Cram's rule is to identify the reaction and product. Have you done this? The Mg reagent should be a huge give-away.

That table looks about right.

Theory of Quantum Gravity & Photon Production
hypervalent_iodine replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note Mike Smith Cosmos, We have been over this before. This forum requires you to back up scientific claims with science / evidence. If you cannot do this within your next post, this will be closed. -
! Moderator Note This thread has run its course and is being closed. On a separate note, physica, please tone down the insults when you post.

You should look up a bond enthalpy table if you haven't already been given one.

This looks like a homework question, so spectroscopy is probably all that's on offer (and would be preferable to just doing mp/bp regardless). Performing spectroscopic analysis on ever compound with that formula would be a waste of time. If the compounds are simple enough, there will already be data on them. Anyway, the spectra the OP has is more than sufficient to work it out. OP: I will look at this later and come back with notes. You should work out the DBE in the meantime.

Low Energy Nuclear Reactions / Cold Fusion (thread split)
hypervalent_iodine replied to barfbag's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note barfbag, I have hidden your post since it blatantly went against my last warning. I hope you remember what you wrote in it and can appreciate the irony of some of your comments as much as I did. For the record, I will keep hiding your posts so long as you keep ignoring the rules, or you force us to ban you. Whichever comes first. -
Custom dictionary for MS Word (and other useful tools)
hypervalent_iodine replied to hypervalent_iodine's topic in Biology
I started using EndNote for referencing and filing away papers when I was in honours and haven't looked back since. It synchs very well with Word and it has proven to be a much simpler way of searching through my documents for papers, since you can attach them to the relevant citation in the program. Latex is also on my list of things to try and pick up, but it's very low down on said list at the moment. I have some private high school students whose school uses Onenote for all their official class notes / lectures. It hadn't occured to me how it might be useful in other ways, so thank you for the suggestion. I'll look into it. -
I came across what seems like a nice, biology inclusive custom dictionary for MS Word today and thought I'd share, since it's a useful tool to have for people who dislike red, squiggly lines. I have another one that I use for chemistry as well, which was linked in another thread here. If anyone has any other useful tools like this for writing in biology, I'd love to hear about them, as I am currently in the process of writing my first research article since moving into the field(s) of microbiology / genetics.
