  1. ! Moderator Note overtone, You need to start learning from past mistakes. Not a single one of your posts has contained even a link to Wikipedia let alone a valid scientific source for your claims. If you're not going to bother backing up your so-called facts with citations, kindly stop presenting your opinions as such. It constitutes soap boxing and will not be tolerated (as surely by now you should know).
  2. No, if you read back you'll see I explicitly referred to them as nocireceptors. You claimed that we have no way of detecting heat, which we now have established is to mean temperatures above 45oC. The thermal nocireceptors are activated by temperatures above 45oC or there abouts. We perceive that feeling as burning. So which part of that process means our nerves don't 'detect heat', when that is exactly what they are responding to?
  3. Oh no, I agree with iNow. You seem have misunderstood what he was saying. And your statement is still incorrect. We perceive hot temperatures above 45oC with thermo receptors as well, they are just different ones to those we use to detect cooler temperatures.
  4. No. I am saying in no uncertain terms that your original statement, Is wrong.
  5. I have requested another mod come in to split these posts. barfbag, as iNow has noted you are not using standard definitions for what you are talking about. You are either wrong in what you are saying or you are simply using words in ways that don't make sense. Could you please define what you mean by warmth and heat and why the two are different? Also, the paradoxical response is not what gives rise to how we perceive extreme temperatures. I have stated that we have different thermo receptors for temperatures above 45oC that are not related to the ones we use to sense cold and you have ignored it, I guess since it doesn't support your claims.
  6. IIRC, there are a number of thermo receptors that respond to different temperature ranges (separate to those that detect cold) up to what you would call painfully hot rather than just warm. Above a certain threshold (about 45oC) what you're feeling is mostly pain as a result of thermal nocireceptors, which are different to the types of receptors used to sense temperatures in the 30oC-45oC range. I think that above a certain temperature, the receptors that detect cold have a burst of activity, but it is short lived and different to what you claimed, which is that the combination of the two is what we use to detect heat, which is somehow different to warmth. This seems quite incorrect to me, or you are not wording it correctly.
  7. This seems fairly nonsensical. Would heat and warmth not be synonymous in this sense? Perhaps you could provide a better explanation and source for what you are taking about.
  8. As a general note, I would be wary of buying a lab coat from a costume store if you are intending to use it as an actual lab coat. Probably not so bad if it's for the types of low level experiments a 6 year old might be involved in, but worth taking into consideration if she continues with more involved experiments as she gets older. The costume store variety are likely made of polyester or cotton blends and are probably not treated in the same way that actual lab coats are to make them flame retardant and resistant to things like melting. Not an ideal quality for a piece of protective gear, but again, for a 6 year old doing mostly biology experiments it may be alright.
  9. ! Moderator Note iwonderaboutthings, please try and keep your threads to one topic. It isn't helpful to yourself or the people trying to respond to you if you keep jumping all over the place with what you're talking about.
  10. Tasmania is a very tiny state with not much in the way of factories and a lot of world heritage forests. However, this may not continue forever as our government would like very much to chop a lot of it down. A beautiful place, though and incidentally, quite similar to NZ.
  11. ! Moderator Note You're really just not getting this. 1. Comments on moderation do not belong in threads. This is considered derailment and is a violation of the forum rules. Being as you've already been suspended once, if this keeps up the next step is to ban you permanently. 2. You were asked to provide evidence. You cannot and will not continue to go on about your idea when your idea is based on a premise that you cannot show to be based in reality. I am closing this thread and you are not to bring up the topic again.
  12. ! Moderator Note I was not accusing anyone of breaking the rule mentioned. It was simply a reminder in light of the fact that many anabolic steroids are controlled substances and are illegal to posses without prescriptions (which you would not get if you only wanted/needed them for body building). Since you are talking about the use of steroids for body building, I felt that a reminder might be necessary. Please do not respond to this mod note in the thread. If you wish to discuss it, PM staff or report the post.
  13. ! Moderator Note Please seek medical advice from another doctor if you are not satisfied with your own. This is not the place for such advice.
  14. ! Moderator Note Just a reminder to please keep in mind the following forum rule:
  15. If the idea of euthanising the insects doesn't sit well with her, there's always the option of just getting her a bug catcher. She can still observe them and try to identify them and at that age, she may get more enjoyment out of watching how they move around and behave anyway.
  16. I would suggest NZ, but you will encounter a fair bit of rain and somewhat chilly temperatures (though summer is perfect). It is not heavily populated nor is it heavily industrialized, but you still have access to the conveniences of developed countries as well as being good for farming. It was also recently rated as one of the happiest places on Earth. Full disclosure: I was born there and have an intrinsic affection for the place.
  17. ! Moderator Note barfbag, 1. You know the appropriate channels for raising concerns about moderator action. This thread is not one of them. 2. You posted in Speculations, which demands evidence as one of the rules of posting, and made claims about the existence of telepathy. If you don't like that, I am more than happy to close the thread now. 3. Insults will not be tolerated here - another thing you have been warned about previously. It stops and it stops now.
  18. ! Moderator Note barfbag, please note that the rules of this forum require that you cite real evidence for your claims. You cannot make your argument under the pretence that telepathy exists without first making a solid scientific argument for its existence. Failure to comply with this will result in thread closure. Note also that anecdotes =/= evidence. Edit: since this is identical to a split thread, I have merged the two. Sorry for any confusion.
  19. ! Moderator Note Please stop derailing this thread. OT posts have been removed to the trash.
  20. You derailed a thread entitled, Proof of God, with more conversation about telepathy. They are not the same topic and you were warned about this before. If you want to talk about telepathy, start a thread. This one, however, is closed.
  21. I managed to get a hold of a Thermo rep late yesterday who has confirmed my suspicions that this is a particularly weird leak, wherever it's coming from. The air/water check I ran was actually after everything was tightened and resetting everything has also not helped at all. I'm mostly confused about how there is so much oxygen. If it were an air leak, I would have expected to see a 3/4:1 N2:O2 ratio and yet somehow I have about twice as much oxygen as I do nitrogen. There aren't any traps in the machine that I know of, so it has me stumped. I'm going to blank out the MS Monday to see where the problem is. I'm kind of hoping it will magically fix itself over the weekend.
  22. I'm wondering if anyone here uses or has used a Thermo GCMS before. We have a Trace1310 in one of our analytical labs that is giving us some hassle with a weird leak. I'm a bit of a novice with the more advanced aspects of GCMS maintenance, etc., so I'm struggling a bit to try and figure out what is going on. The story is this. Yesterday we had a software problem that prompted one of my colleagues to turn off the GC component at the switch on the back of the machine and reset the computer. This fixed the software issue, but since then we have had a huge gas leak appear and I'm not sure where it's coming from. This is a screen shot of a water/air scan I did (there is no change with the cal. gas being on or off): And the most recent tune from today: There is clearly an issue given the amount of oxygen, nitrogen and argon (and whatever the peak at 27.7 is). I have replaced the septum, but it did nothing to fix the issue. No one has played with the column or any of the connections, which I have found to all be fine and not loose. The carrier gas tank is also fine (our Shimadzu runs off the same He tank and is having no troubles), so it's not from that. I am wondering if turning off the machine at the power lever has turned off something else in the machine, but I have no idea what and the manual is of no help. I've also emailed our rep, but he is apparently on holiday for two weeks.
  23. As a hint, the arrow in the question is telling you which bond to look down to draw your projection.
  24. ! Moderator Note fiveworlds, please note that we take care here at SFN not to simply give answers to people for their homework. I have hidden your post in accordance with this. Zyclef1995, if you require help you will need to show some effort and explain what exactly you are struggling with.
