  1. I think in this case you want the name where the numbers give the smallest sum. So, 3+3+4=10 (as in 4-ethyl-3,3-dimethylhexane), which is smaller than 4+4+3=11 (as in 3-ethyl-4,4-dimethylhexane). On a slightly more pedantic note, you should also watch the number and placement of commas in the name. Rather than 4,4,-dimethyl it should be 4,4-dimethyl (or 3,3-dimethyl in your case).
  2. No. An aldehyde is an aldehyde and a ketone is a ketone. Acetyl groups can sometimes be aldehydes or sometimes ketones. Have a look again at the general formlae for these groups.
  3. If it is a ketone then yes. It being an acetyl doesn't really tell you what the real functionality of the carbonyl actually is, just that the carbonyl has a CH3 attached to it. In naming them, you still need to indicate the functional group. For instance, propanone could also be called (and more often is called) acetone. As for your other compound, again, it's both. The systematic name is ethanal, but you would more commonly see it called acetaldehyde.
  4. One thread per topic, please. Closed.
  5. You may edit your profile to delete all of your personal info, but your posts will remain. Staff will not delete them. If you wish to leave the forum, the simple solution is just to log out and not return.
  6. ! Moderator Note Let's try stick to the topic, please.
  7. It's both. An acetyl group is a specific type of carbonyl in the form of CH3COR. It's not listed in McMurry because anything you can call an acetyl is also under the banner of some other functional group.
  8. ! Moderator Note Could you please expand on this?
  9. serloco has been banned on request.
  10. There have certainly been people who have done this, but it is almost always very, very obvious. If a member doesn't notice the sudden jump in another person's rep, staff do and since staff can see who has given out rep points and can figure out if they are sock puppets, the person will be caught pretty quick. In those cases, the reputation given is normally reversed, the sock puppet is banned and the member who created it gets an official warning. Here I would disagree. For the most part, what I have noticed is that members who demonstrate a certain level of aggressiveness, wilful ignorance and/or stubbornness about a topic will get negative rep points. This happens often in Speculations, but it does not seem to be the case for someone who is willing to accept and learn from criticisms. One other counterpoint to your claim is in the fact that many OP's in Speculations do not have any rep points, negative or otherwise. According to your logic, if a member got neg rep points simply for sharing their non-mainstream views and hypotheses, then the OP's of the threads in Speculations should have a lot of neg rep points. And yet they don't.
  11. Since we made the rules and you didn't.
  12. ! Moderator Note Just FTR, these posts are probably better suited to their own thread and so I have moved them accordingly.
  13. The process itself doesn't appear to be very difficult, but you would be using chemicals you probably don't want to go anywhere near, especially without any experience or knowledge in chemistry. Was there any particular reason you needed to make this?
  14. ! Moderator Note Le Repteux, please do not use other threads to advertise your own.
  15. As well as depending on the instrument, it may also depend on exactly what you plan on using it for. There are also other things to consider, such as how available and proficient the company's technical support and application specialists are. If you have a specific list of machines, that may be more helpful here.
  16. ! Moderator Note If you wish to talk about telepathy, please open a separate thread instead of derailing this one.
  17. ! Moderator Note Just a reminder for everyone to please try and stick to the topic.
  18. We'd have to kill you.
  19. ! Moderator Note Thread split from here. Bird111dog, please keep in mind that we don't allow other members to come into threads and post unrelated or speculative content.
  20. ! Moderator Note Let's all just take a breath before it goes too far down the rabbit hole. Acme, the quote you used from Phi came from an entirely different thread and was certainly out of context as you used it. It is not a particularly admirable way to try and contribute to discussion, so perhaps it would be best if you just left the personal accusations out of it entirely. Do not respond to this note within the thread.
  21. ! Moderator Note Given how often threads about the reputation system come up and following a recent comment in a similar thread, staff have decided that this thread is is to be pinned. Virtually any objection to the rep system has been addressed here and so we will refer members to this thread should any questions arise in the future.
  22. ! Moderator Note This is starting to get off topic. Please return to the discussion outlined by the OP or otherwise, please open another thread.
  23. ! Moderator Note Alright, I was going to wait for another mod to do this, but this is getting ridiculous. barfbag, it seems you have serious problems remembering the forum rules. We will not tolerate insulting and personal remarks on this forum. If you wish to continue posting here, please review your attitude. Stop calling the English skills of others into question, stop insulting the intellect of other members and stop using logical fallacy and hostile language to try and get your point across. We value positive interactions between members here and we try to enforce the rules in a way that optimises that for the purposes of good and productive discussion (we are after all, a discussion forum). With that in mind, it also bears mentioning that a discussion is not something you should enter into with the intention of 'winning'. It will do you no good whatsoever to stubbornly and aggressively try and argue a point without allowing yourself the opportunity to concede where you may be wrong. Do not respond to this note within the thread. Edit: I also need to add a general reminder for others posting in this thread to avoid the vaguely personal remarks being made here. Please keep in mind the distinction between attacking ideas and the person making them.
  24. Please post any clarifications you need in the existing thread.
  25. ! Moderator Note People reading this thread, Please be aware that CaO (quicklime) can react violently with water and the reaction should not be performed by anyone without all of the necessary safety precautions (and especially not in a sealed glass vessel).
