Univers Inside a black hole
hypervalent_iodine replied to Edgard Neuman's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
! Moderator Note Hi Mordred, Welcome to SFN. Just a small reminder of the forum rules, which state that the use of threads to advertise is prohibited. If your website is purely noncommercial, then you are welcome to include it in your signature or profile, but please do not simply advertise it in other threads unless the part of the website you're linking to is there as supporting information for your post. -
The gravitational field and optical
hypervalent_iodine replied to thomaspham01's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note Moved to speculations. You will need to elaborate a bit more on this or it will be closed. Edit: Maybe edit your post back into English? You will also need to do a better job of explaining and introducing your theory as part of your OP. Jusy posting a picture of a few pages of writing won't cut it. -
! Moderator Note This isn't news of any sort and doesn't belong in the Science News section of the forum. Since you appear to be leading into your own personal ideas, I have moved the thread to Speculations. Please be aware that in addition to the usual rules of the forum, Speculations also has an additional set of rules that you will be asked to adhere to.

Sensei, JC is completely right here. Your chemistry is a bit off on this. To the solubility issue. I'm not sure if you mistyped or misremembered the amounts, but there is no way you are dissolving 60 g of NaCl in 18 mL of water. The solubility of NaCl is 359 g/L, which means that in 18 mL of water you'd be looking at a maximum of about 6.5 g dissolved in solution. Furthermore, and I may be wrong in this not having done any electrolysis beyond learning the theory, but would 18 mL of water not boil off fairly quickly with that much current? If not quickly, then certainly before the 26 hours is up. You will not get HCl forming in the presence of strongly basic conditions. That should be pretty obvious. The wiki article you linked uses a membrane, diaphragm or mercury cell to separate the two products (or constantly remove in the case of the latter) and as far as I can see, you did not describe any such thing in your process, which leads me to believe that you are not making what you think you are making. As John Cuthber noted, if you are making anything (ignoring your solubility issues) it's quite likely the -OCl or -OCl3 salts and even they would be contaminated with some percentage of NaCl. Also worth noting, especially for the benefit of the OP, is that you should not be smelling chlorine or allowing yourself to come into contact with it. Not because it's not there to smell, but because chlorine gas is quite toxic. To the OP: NaOH is trivially easy to buy and I would not bother trying to make it from scratch. Was there any particular reason you were trying to do this?

Dry ice in chest ice cream idea
hypervalent_iodine replied to Marshalscienceguy's topic in Applied Chemistry
If your chest is insulated and has an insulated lid (not one that is locked in place; something like a good quality cooler would work provided it just sits on top and you don't lock the lid down with any clips), it should be fine to keep in your garage, though it obviously won't last as a solid forever in there and you will want to make sure that your garage has some airflow. As others have noted, don't confine yourself in a small, closed room with it, don't go in elevators with it and try to keep it away from your face (or your face away from it). There's also the risk of cryo burns to consider, but that one should be fairly obvious. It might be worth investing in some cryo gloves or similar if you plan on having to use your hands to pull ice cream in and out of a chest full of dry ice all the time. Alternatively, it may work out cheaper for you in the long run to buy a portable vending freezer of some kind (though the initial expense would be quite high). -
Paper on GM affect on the environment
hypervalent_iodine replied to Twinbird24's topic in Ecology and the Environment
! Moderator Note overtone, Do not continue to derail this thread. How much clearer can we make this for you? I have split your post into the trash. For the record, I have not reprimanded or removed chadn737's post directly after my last modnote, as it was posted within several of mine and looked to simply be a case of cross posting rather than ignoring the note completely as overtone seems so intent on doing. -
Paper on GM affect on the environment
hypervalent_iodine replied to Twinbird24's topic in Ecology and the Environment
! Moderator Note This thread has gotten very off topic. Please get back to it and for the last time, overtone, stop derailing threads with what can at best be called speculations or the next time we suspend you, it will be permanent. -
Don't worry, you're not going batty. I moved it after I saw your post.

Okay, well what is pH a measure of and what are the numbers you need to calculate Ka? I see you've written the equation for the equilibrium, but what do the values in the brackets represent and how would you go about getting those numbers?

! Moderator Note LOL. Did you think with the creative addition of `, that we wouldn't be able to figure out who you were? Bye bye, now.

A lingual theory of everything
hypervalent_iodine replied to Mike Smith Cosmos's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note Mike Smith Cosmos, We've been a bit lax with this thread and have probably let certain posts continue without staff intervention when it was probably needed. That has to end. This is a science discussion site and your thread claims to be a TOE, which would be scientific in nature. You need to stop posting difficult to comprehend and scientifically meaningless statements and come up with something that is testable in the real world rather than simply as a vague thought experiment, that has precise, unambiguous solutions, makes predictions and has evidence, or we will be closing this. It is not other people's job to find evidence for your theory or make real predictions about it, it is yours and you cannot simply tell someone to go away because you don't wish to respond to their criticisms. That being said, physica, you don't get to throw around insults to other members because you don't agree with what they've said either. That also stops. One other request, Mike. Could you please stop with the overuse of weird fonts. It's difficult to have to read. -
Who here is a global warming skeptic?
hypervalent_iodine replied to Mr Rayon's topic in Climate Science
So then will you concede that you are incorrect in your conclusions since the graphs absolutely do not support your claim? If you wish to expand on why you think that cooling is taking place, it may be best placed in a separate thread in speculations. As swansont noted, spreading your argument across multiple threads is probably not the best approach. -
Who here is a global warming skeptic?
hypervalent_iodine replied to Mr Rayon's topic in Climate Science
Sculptor, Both of those graphs show trends of increasing global temperatures in the former and higher than average temperatures in the latter (a period of 10 years is hardly enough to establish a trend, by the way). How exactly are you interpreting those graphs to arrive at the conclusion that the Earth is cooling? -

! Moderator Note Do you? Thread closed. If you have a question or something to discuss, please frame your threads in a way that people can figure out what it is. As it stands, your last two threads look like little more than soap-boxing, which you may recall is against the forum rules.

Is it worth getting a spirit burner over a bunsen?
hypervalent_iodine replied to NowakScience's topic in Chemistry
Okay, but why do you need to set things on fire? Usually that's one of those things we try to avoid. The hot plates used in labs are also magnetic stirrers and they can be pricey ($100 or so for a cheap new one), but they're usually pretty good. It would be good to know what is it you're trying to do to be able to tell you what you're better off getting. -
! Moderator Note Since this thread has no discernable point and since vampares refuses to make light of one, I am closing this. Vampares, whatever this is, don't reopen it unless you have a valid question to go with it.

2016 US Presidential Race - Landslide or Laughing Stock?
hypervalent_iodine replied to iNow's topic in Politics
And I'm sure his son will follow up, I just think he'll end up in the same boat as his father. Some of his recent comments, which have been more centrist, make me think he may be better than the other hopefuls. Or at least less terrible, but all of the possibilities for the 2016 Republican primaries look terrible to me. He confuses me, though. His comments in the past and even his own website would indicate that his opinions are on the very conservative end of things rather than the more moderate end that he's currently speaking at (his website advocates a complete ban on abortion regardless of the circumstances for instance, which is even harsher than Cruz). My guess is that he's laying some ground work to capture the centre in 2016, but that will be of little help if he loses the far-right vote in the primaries. As to the OP: I really like Warren and she would be a great candidate, but I don't think her time is now. She hasn't even seen out her first term in the senate yet and running in 2016 may work more against her than for her. A lot could happen between now and 2016, but as it stands, Clinton is the likely candidate for the Dem ticket. Even ignoring that, I think Warren is better off waiting and continuing to make more of a national profile for herself and establish her base before she attempts to run for presidency. That being said, she's 64 now and if she ran in 2020 or 2024, she'd be 71 or 75, which in either event would make her older than the oldest serving president by about 2 or 6 years. That may or may not be a bad thing; it would obviously depend on where she's at by then. .
