  1. Do you mean his son, Rand Paul? Ron Paul has stated that he won't be running in any more primaries. I think most of his (Rand's) support would come from the people who supported his father, which was not nearly enough to get Ron through the 2012 primaries and will most likely not be enough for Rand in 2016. As well, some of his opinions of late aren't conservative enough for most Republicans / Tea Partiers (e.g. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/25/rand-paul-abortion_n_5213294.html), so he may even lose some votes from the far right / libertarian base. Possibly he'll run in the primaries, but I seriously doubt he'd get much further. Especially with other candidates like Cruz or Rubio in the mix.
  2. ! Moderator Note Kramer, You should know by now that we do not allow members to hijack discussion with their own pet theories. Please do not do this again or you will be risking further action on your account. Post split from here.
  3. http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/82963-molecules/#entry803724 This was reported due to it supposedly constituting ridicule towards the OP. Staff do not agree with this assessment and as such, no action will be taken. The OP of that thread does however need to take note of the fact that we do not allow members to create multiple threads on the same thing.
  4. One thread per topic, please.
  5. Not really. The silica on the TLC plate or in a silica flash column forms a matrix in which things can bind reversibly. As you pass through a solution of a compound or compounds in solvent, you get competitive binding into these pockets, with the more polar compounds binding better than less / non-polar compounds. You end up with a situation where non-polar compounds move further up the plate than those that are polar, as the polar compounds are constantly getting stuck (for lack of a better word) to the silica as they move. This is a good overview of the concepts.
  6. ! Moderator Note ObamaBinLaden, I appreciate that you might not be using this for explosives, but it's what high purity HNO3 tends to be used for. We have rules that prohibit posting threads seeking advice on the making of illegal or hazardous substances and as such, this thread is closed.
  7. Neku, We don't provide answers to homework questions here, though we are willing to lend a hand wherever you are struggling to understand something. Which part of the question are you having trouble with?
  8. This would be a bit odd. Proper reaction protocol will always tell you how much in total of each reagent you should be adding and of course, reactions take time. But yes, this is is all pure speculation and of no use until the OP can provide more information on what they are actually doing.
  9. Could you give me a link or some sort of reference so I can look at it? It's hard to make a judgement call without a better idea of what you're doing.
  10. Could you post the rest of the protocol? It looks like it's asking you to add your substance portion-wise rather than adding the whole lot all at once. Out of curiosity, what is x substance?
  11. Yes "we" do and if you don't, then you definitely should start trying. No, because tuna is disgusting (and this is completely irrelevant anyway). No. Where do you even come up with your ideas about the world? As you so unnecessarily pointed out, we eat many of the things that come out of the ocean and subjecting food sources to potentially high levels of radiation by simply dumping waste into the water does not bode well for the health of the people who eat those things. There are also instances like this that could happen, perhaps more so as natural disasters become more and more commonplace. And that is totally ignoring the potential environmental impact on marine ecosystems, which may not seem relevant to your view except for the fact that we (and many other organisms) rely on marine life for a lot of things. The main argument of any specificity that I have heard is to do with how long it takes to decommission nuclear plants. I'm by no means an expert on the subject and I'm sure there are many more specific arguments from that side of the fence, but that aspect does appear to be quite costly. That in combination with the general fear of nuclear and popular perception that such plants have a high potential to do a lot of damage makes them a risky product to endorse. Personally, I don't have too much of a problem with the idea provided that the plants are designed, regulated and monitored appropriately, though I'd choose renewables over nuclear most days regardless.
  12. No trouble, except probably to all of the things that live in the ocean.
  13. Dynamic how? Honestly, I couldn't even tell you the last time I saw a bunsen burner in a chemistry lab. Probably high school. We use hot plates these days both because they're safer and because you get a lot more control over your reaction.
  14. A quick Google search suggests that it is used at such doses for acne in the alternative medicine circles. I did a cursory search and didn't note any decent scientific literature in support of this, though I did notice a lot of anecdotes reporting that any outcome was both temporary and came with side effects (hair loss, dermatitis around the nose and diarrhea were a few). Even if it does work, I would question whether it is actually worth it. Putting aside the fact that this endeavor is mostly without grounds and seems a bit pointless and given that you yourself are fine with swallowing the pills, I'm not sure what your specific problem is. There are of course many ways to skin a cat, but taking it in pill form seems the easiest route to me. What exactly would you envisage as a good alternative?
  15. ! Moderator Note Hi emilymayzes, Please be aware that we don't simply give out answers to what appear to be homework questions. Could you please show your own attempts and explain where it is that you are struggling?
  16. Well, you could stop wasting your money and potentially harming your general health by not megadosing on vitamins.
  17. It may surprise you to know that I'm also not that old or that dead (FYI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Burns_Woodward). In fact, my mother wasn't even born when the photo in my avatar was taken.
  18. Perhaps my avatar is a picture of me already.
  19. ! Moderator Note glyoxime, This is a discussion forum. Please do not use the site to advertise papers or books. Thread closed.
  20. Grignard reactions typically have an acid work up step if that's the part that's confusing you. The product will still be what you would expect from a Grignard reaction.
  21. Yes. I mean no offense by this, but if you didn't even know that benzaldehyde was an aldehyde then I think it would be in your best interest to read up on some basic organic chemistry before you start going through reactions.
  22. Why exactly do you need to produce a flame?
  23. ! Moderator Note David Wechsler, Thank you firstly for your contributions and welcome to SFN. Please be aware that we have rules that prohibit advertising in threads. As such, I have removed the link to your company's website and ask that you do not link to it in the future unless you are linking to some kind of supporting information / documentation related to the content of your post(s).
  24. Plot twist: everyone in this thread is the same person.
  25. ! Moderator Note jduff, What will it take for you to realise that SFN is not a conspiracy forum? Please post this sort of baseless nonsense elsewhere. Thread closed.
