  1. well Fe+Cl2--->FeCl2 Where does the HOCL come from? And how does this speed up the rusting of the speed wool? Sorry if I'm coming across as leeching but I just want to understand what's happening with the reaction. I hate throwing chemicals together and not understanding what's actually taking place.....
  2. k lets start with the first reaction. NaOCl(aq)+NaCl(aq)+CH3COOH(aq)------>HOCL(aq)+Cl2(g)+NaCl(aq)+CH3CO2Na(aq) Am I on the right track?
  3. Alright, this is what I've come up with so far, keep in mind I'm doing O level chemistry. NaCl+CH3COOH ----> HOCL+CL2+H20+CH3CO2NA It's not balanced but is this the correct equation? I'm not to sure where to incorporate the steel wool in to it.
  4. what the hell is HOCL? :S
  5. anybody knows the chemical equation for this? I know bleach is NaClO and vinegar is CH3COOH. But I have no idea how to write a balanced equation for the two reacting with steel wool. Can anyone help me? Thanks
  6. I was trying to produce Iron oxide through electrolysis. I used an old dc converter for an electric train set I had, a nail (that had rust on it already) on the anode. NaCl was the electrolyte. Well......the solution went from colourless to bluey greeny. After I wiped off the cathode (it was changing colour also lol! a kind of steely orange) I restarted the process, the solution was now turning orange. What the hell is going on?
  7. whew thats the last time I post in an old thread, might get attacked by a tree again.
  8. thanks alot for all your help!
  9. The Caribbean ahah, and if your picturing forests and bush houses everywhere, let's just say its changed a bit
  10. mmm saltpeter sounds delicious...jk. I'm going to check and see if the local pharmacy would sell me saltpeter seeing that it would be the easiest route. KCL and NaNO3 sounds easier than the other methods I've read about. I did a search but I think I need to ask where am I going to get KCL and NaNO3. I have a suspicion they don't sell them in the pharmacie
  11. lol ok ok fair enough let me give it a shot
  12. Thanks for clearing it up for me, guess I knew what to do but not the proper mechanics behind it which you just showed to me. Can you recommend any websites that can explain to me how to extract KNO3 from fertiliser? Or any method that requires the easiest aquirable materials? Thanks again. (want to make a smoke bomb...safely lol)
  13. How is the answer 32? Keep in mind the question said "then one day she gave me 8 chocolates". That question is horribly worded and I don't see how she could have been there 30 days when he lost 12 games and then won 8. To me she was there 13 days since on only 1 day he got 8 chocolates. But then that contradicts what the question first stated about there was only one chess game per day.
  14. I read a post exactly like this before. I'm a little confused with the measurements. KCL+NaNO3 ----> KNO3+NaCL It's a one to one ratio i know this. The approx molecular mass of KCL=74 and NaNO3=85 74/85=0.87 It says to get the proper amount of NaNO3 I need to multiply 0.87 by the mass of KCL that choose to use. Wouldn't it be the other way around? That I multiply the mass of the NaNO3 I use by 0.87 to determine the mass of KCL I need? Any help appreciated.
