Evolution in Humans.....
admiral_ju00 replied to Crash's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Yes. I don't know if anyone can quantify the rate for you on this(besides that over a generation, a genome accumulates about 100 mutations). Yes(although some changes are negotiable/debatable). Dentition, High Altitude tolerance, Sickle cell anemia, Skin colour, Blood groups, longevity, Then there are of course the acclimation and acclimatization issues(which would account for the Allen's rule) etc. Most of these though could be lumped under the influences of the Sociocultural phenomenon. (Yeah, I'm a Lumper ) You will probably be disappointed by what you'll see That is but 1 of the items, there are numerous others. Wrong, wrong, wrong. In today's society, when it comes to H. sapiens, it all(or mostly) comes down to Culture(Socioculture),that would just mean that more of them will survive then in the past, much more. Before you continue any further with this, Lookie here Evolution isn't something that can be stopped, paused or directed. Are you talking about a certain group or the entire species here? Small, isolated groups will be affected by the founder effect, so you can say that they can evolve certain traits or adaptation much quicker than a much larger social group, let alone the entire species, one that as widespread as we are. That is the theory of Orthogenesis, and it's just plain wrong. Yes it is. -
Will Hypnosis Help Me Remember A Language
admiral_ju00 replied to bloodhound's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
And you're studying maths? Interesting. While I do not believe in Hypnosis, that is the underlying idea behind it. -

Depending on the hardware, but when writing drivers for any system, in most cases it is crucial to have a spec book from the manufacturer for that particular device - or rather the chip that's on it.

I'm guessing that it's similar to what this guy is writing(looks like this guy likes to publish in SciAm even though I went to his website for this article ) http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa006&articleID=000E350F-2F66-10CF-AD3D83414B7F0000&colID=13

This may be just a wild guess, but I'd say 'Americans' is what he was thinking.

Yeah, but isn't the cabling they think will need is only micrometers long or something?

to buy a car??? I've used it many a time on small stuff, but not something of this caliber. Anyway, this is the auction I'm thinking about: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6161&item=2483310166&rd=1 Right now I have a 1999 Z28, but will sell it in a heartbeat for one of these 30th Anniversary SS models.

What is the highest(heat) possible temperature? It's interesting that while the lowest possible temp has a value(absolute zero) even though it has never yet been reached. What about the highest or hottest temp possible. The biggest number I've seen is 100Million degrees C, or are there even higher temps?

I see that you're still very, very confused about the whole thing.

While a formal education in programing is nice, it is not required. This book has done it for me(well, I have the last edition). So with a good book some free time and a compiler, you can learn it. Visual Basic is an important language and can land you a good job in App, API or even SQL jobs/contracts. MS SQL Server and Visual Basic when used in combination can be a very powerful thing.

Speaking of counts, why doesn't this site keep the Most Active Users upto date(as it only works in a real time basis)?

Well, looks my attempt was an utter failure. Oh well. Let it die then.

Any chance you post a step-by-step how-to on your coil?

I thought that the ideas behind or in this theory should help out many with the question that is on all or at least most minds, at least to fill in the general background and allow for a more informed and educational debates on Evolution. It's called the Selfish Gene Theory. Here's a brief rundown on it(plus many other goodness): Selfish Gene Theory For more information, great links, book reviews, etc, this is a very good site: Especially for those who are studying Evolution and or Physical(aka Biological) Anthropology, that site has a wealth of info, or at the very least it can set one on the right path to a great book, etc. World of Richard Dawkins Finally this is a must read, after all , it's what started the Scientific Revolution(Evolution). I still prefer a hardcopy, but someone was nice enough to make it into a digicopy. The Origin Of Species - by C. Darwin

Nice Calculus problem involving Maclaurin series
admiral_ju00 replied to bloodhound's topic in Analysis and Calculus
Dave, I think you should start a Calc 101 section here, and kind of like instead of asking question / recieving answer thing, maybe you guys can start others (like myself) on our way to actually understand Calculus? (Kind of like a teaching/tutoring thing) Or maybe not.... -
If you were ever wondering why perhaps it seems easier for a (a woman)person to kill or mistreat their adopted children, this is should be of interest. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3839233.stm

This has and still is a very long and old debate and I didn't see that this was covered here(yet), so what do you think(and in hopefully more than a few words): Tyrannosaurus Rex - aka - the Tyrant Lizard King. Predator or Scavenger? If for some reason, you might deem him/her(I like to give things a personality and 'It' simply does not work ) a Scavenger, why, and is he still a "Tyrant Lizard King"? This may be a wild shot as I haven't seen anyone here either contemplating about future professional expansion into Paleontology or is currently studying it. But, what do you think about the rest of the Tyrannasauria's(Family group in which T-Rex belongs)? {edit: forgot this question as well} T-rex has always been considered a loner. Is he or is he not? Depending on the outcome, should the T-rex lose his title as the Tyrant Lizard King? Especially when there was a bigger and badder dino out there (Giganotosaurus)? Any thoughts on him(along the similar lines of this thread)?

I have a few ideas for discussions, hopefully which will keep people engaged for at least a while. I'll try one first to see how it goes before I'll post anything else though.

Question for Biologists(primarily those with lab access)
admiral_ju00 replied to admiral_ju00's topic in Other Sciences
First of all, thanks to all that replied. Daisy, the Uni deemed it inappropriate as they don't see any valid reasons of letting me do something that will basically satisfy my own curiosity, that and after all we learn by experience right? I'm not qualified enough (yet) to simply barge on in to the Kentucky's Archaeological Society and ask them the same question so that I can use their gear(performing my project, I will or at least want to do it all myself or as much of it as I can). The sample I have in mind is 500, for obvious reasons, but at the very minimum I'm guessing a sample of 50 might do. For this experiment I'm not really interested in studying the mtDNA, just looking for raw datum. Want to compare the Control region of mtDNA and look for mutation for a particular animal population(dogs, I have a bunch of bones(which are fairly recent) which should have adequate doses of DNA either in teeth or bone marrow, so I don't think more then 10-20 PCR cycles will be needed to get me what I need in quantity, provided that I don't manage to contaminate the samples.) DeoxyriboNecleicAcid, the info I've already been told or have, *should* do the trick, but I'll(I'm not an expert of this or to too full of pride ) take anything you're willing to give me on this as well. Books that you'd recommend or Links. Even if it is to compare to what I have and what You have. I like that home method example you've given in the above post, (for some reason I didn't think I'll be able to do it w/o the proper equipment, but if you think I can, then and if you don't mind, please share some more). {edit} These guys seem to have the nessessary kits: http://www.bioline.com/n_usa.htm But for one thing, i'll need to get a centrifugal device, fridge, enzime kits, etc. Basically I need a Lab, Damnit!!! Oh I see this getting very expensive, very quick. GRRRR -
