Cooperation in Evolution (and in human nature)
admiral_ju00 replied to Dov's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Or it won't kill anyone to register and create their own account and email notifiers Speaking of which, I haven't been on that site in a while. Grrr -
Stonehenge has never had my curiosity or at least not yet. So I'm with Dave here. What is all of this about or for(the purpose of you bringing this in)? It sounds/looks on a border of being paranormal and pseudoscience, and if so, why do you keep on adding these details as they amount to confusion and nothing more.

Question for Sayonara or anyone else with lab access. I'm looking for a ballpark figure on how much does it cost your lab to extract, replicate and analyze a short section of DNA(mtDNA really) - not counting the man-hours? I have an idea for a project, but the Uni. deemed it inappropriate or at least not a good enough reason to proceed. I'm trying to see if it may be cheaper/easier to go with this company's services and or why will my Uni not allow me to use it's gear. (Even though a sample of 500 will get extremely expensive with these guys.)

I don't know about those of you who here use Linux, but Security is of utmost priority. Just because your Linux distro comes with 4 or 6 or 50 cd's, Do not install all that's given to you. So install what you need or what you're planning to work with and or learn. 1) Installing things that you do not know how to work with, is a potential security hole. 2) Installing too many things will in addition of Item # 1 ^ ^, present you with too many things to worry about. Meaning you probably won't properly secure all that you have. That will mean many more security holes. 3) Might want to consider implementing IP Masquerade, also, might want to download ipchains. 4) Might want to get This Book Unless you just don't give a damn about what's going on, on your computer.

I can't remember the guys name or the time he did it(50's or 60's - something like that) but I do know that a guy, a radio operator devised himself a challenge to stay awake for as long as he can and at the same time being on the air the whole time. I believe he only lasted about 80 hours or so w/o sleep(could be more or less, don't recall the details) but at the end he was about to go postal(he exhibited lots of psychological issues), and if he would have gone longer, he probably would have died. But I believe that Glider has already covered that aspect.

The term "Designer Genes" are usually reffered to the genes within the genome that actually codes for something(very tiny amount as compared to the rest of the genomic material of which 90-95% is nothing but Junk DNA). AAV (virus) is used most commonly in a gene therapy and that may be considered a designer Genome. Because the original version of AAV IS a virus(as you know, Viruses are exceptionally good at sneaking genetic material into the cell's nucleus), in order to use it to 'sneak' a gene or two into the human genome(so that it does not have any detrimental effects. Some genes on it Must be turned off, and then they insert a gene into the genome of this virus that needs to insert in the genome of the organism. That is why it can be considered Designer Genome. The stuff that they do in Crystallography(modifying DNA) can and is considered Designer DNA, as well as the pharmaceutical companies when they create new (or modified or novel) proteins, enzymes, etc. Hence the word Designer Drugs, Designer DNA, etc. If you can figure that out, make sure you patent it/them, as that will most likely make you a very rich man/woman. We have the info on the Genome. http://www.obbec.com/ http://www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/home.shtml We now need to figure it out how it all works(which genes actually code for stuff, etc) and learn how to control it all.

Did I/it? That was unintentional. Ok, then I'm glad you fixed that.

Yes, but didn't you just flip what I said more or less upside down? Same message, just reads diffently?

Hero, I was going to type a lenghty explanation of what I(or IS) meant by that, but I've just stumbled on this site, and at a quick visual scan, it should answer your questions: http://staff.science.nus.edu.sg/~parwani/c1/node60.html

Yep. It's kind of a vicious circle, isn't it? On one hand you have the Israeli military, who targets and kills a major militant. Sometimes when that happens, they also manage to take out a building or two with a bunch of civilians. The surviving civilians who have just lost a family member will pick up some ammo or bombs and go to Israel(I know I would, under the same circumstances) and blow something up. The Israeli (civilians) want revenge, so they demand their gov't to do something. It send it's military, etc, etc, etc.

Uhm. Wow. This one has me stomped. I thought that all the movies, pictures, people(survivors), the mass graves, the concentration camps(and it's equipment: ie: ovens, gas chambers, etc), etc was enough to satisfy anybody. Or are you saying that it was just a Conspiracy? A very elaborate and well though of, at that.

Last time I checked, Canada was Not part of USA. Which would mean it will be covered by the phrase "Everywhere except USA", or wouldn't it? But on a side note, some people, including myself think that USA should simply annex Canada as it's 51st state, since right now it's(Canada) neither here nor there.

Addition of U's to words like: Colour, flavour, etc, was always told(at least to me) that it is an International English. It is used everywhere Except in the USA. I wonder though, did anybody check out the linky I posted???

Biological failure? Maybe you can define that a tad more clearly? An organism's fitness, or ability to reproduce a viable offspring(that is itself capable of reproduction) can only be considered a failure in terms of an evolutionary perspective. Not in it's physiological state! What about those animals or humans that are fully capable of reproduction(they are non-sterile or homosexual) but simply CHOOSE not to reproduce. Does that also make them a biological failure. When taking this under the very narrow definition you have provided, then yes, they are. That is however a wrong conclusion/decision.

Very interesting, study. Courtesy of Nature. I wonder if the next time a cop stops me, I can site this as a reason.

Homosexuality stretches as far back as the Neolithic. Back then, overpopulation was not a problem. Plus, some animals can and do exhibit homosexual behavior, but that is generally open to debate and interpretation.

Lol, maybe he's going for a reverse psychology lesson/thing? That's good info you've posted, nonetheless. -
Check this: http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/isofaq.html#whatisiso {edit} that should make it less troublesome than my original responce.

Then maybe you'll find this site more acceptable. http://www.mcw.edu/cellbio/colorvision/index.html
