Alrighty then. I will write the article on the subject as soon as possible. Thanks for the offer . Just a couple of questions on writing on WiSci: 1) Do I need to register before I can contribute? 2) If I do need to, how do I log in?

this is the secret Lost tape that I found on youtube. It's very interesting stuff and involves how the show may progress, for those of you who are interested. Lots of secrets involving the island are discussed here.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrH4iiw-owM

I always found equilibrium problems and force diagrams to be rather annoying. -
I think there is something wrong with this link, I tried to upload it and my computer crashed.

How is a Nuclear Reaction controlled?
MolotovCocktail replied to MolotovCocktail's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
ahh... so it is the flow of neutrons that are controlled. My bad, I was only thinking about the way neutrons flow in an uncontrolled reaction, and not thinking about the control rods used in the reaction process. Thank you very much! -
One thing that I have been wondering about was, how are nuclear reactions in a nuclear power plant controlled? It seems to me that one really cannot control the neutrons that cause the chain reaction, and I know that the reaction cannot be stopped once it starts. I'm guessing that it is probably the speed of the reaction that is controlled, rather than the reaction itself. What is it that keeps a nuclear power plant from becoming a nuclear bomb?

How to prevent hacking, anyone?
MolotovCocktail replied to MolotovCocktail's topic in Computer Science
they are passwords for things to access on my computer. I figured that as long as they can't access any of the important files, I should be fine. Besides, I don't want to be locked out of my own computer in the event that I should confuse or get my access passwords mixed up. And I don't remote access my home computer, much better and safer to just use a USB (which has a password too ) -

Astrology!!! 100% Foolproof science!!!!
MolotovCocktail replied to MolotovCocktail's topic in Speculations
Well, its called pseudoscience for a reason.... -
We use a large percentage of our brain on a daily basis. Using more would result in a seizure, not psychic powers. You are probably referring to the mistaken notion that we only use 10% of our brain, when in reality about 10% of the neurons fire at any given time.

Also remember, foodchain, that your clocks are run on mechanical gears, uses vibration of a quartz crystal (which can grow out of sync after a period of time) to maintain accuracy, and depend on your clumsy fingers to set it. Atomic clocks, on the other hand, uses the resonance frequency of atoms, usually cesium atoms, to maintain their accuracy. So yes, they are extremely accurate. I'm interested in writing it, but I need a professional to back me up with it because I am no expert, but I do feel that I am quite familiar with it to be able to explain the basics.

In Steven Hawking's book "The Universe in a Nutshell", he wrote of an experiment that involved 2 jet airliners, one going east the other going west. They put an atomic clock on each plane and flew them in opposite directions. When they landed, they found that the plane that was going east(?) was a few billionths of a second younger than the plane going west. Of course, he noted that you have to fly an airplane 400 billion times if you wanted to gain 1 second in your life (which will be more than canceled by any airline meals that you eat )

Thought that get your attention. Well anyway, on to the actual subject. It seems to me that astrology can indeed predict the future. No really. It can. You see, there are many, many instances in which someone's fortune has been correct. But then, as most of us know, astrology is total BS. It is so for the reason that every one of the predictions that is made is so vague they could be applied to any situation. Predictions such as "Looking for solutions with vigor and complexity will be present" or "There could be instigated actions and sabotage. This could result in political problems" aren't specific enough to really test them for legitimacy or to see if they really can predict the future, since it is only stating what could happen, rather than what will happen. Notice the difference between "could" and "will" and you'll see what I mean. And take a look at this quote I saw from one astrology site: "Predictions can go wrong without a warning - so judicious use is recommended. These are based on horoscopes or birth charts cast for relevant times and periods." (Source: http://www.geocities.com/akxyz/) See that, even they know, so therefore these particular people who wrote this site are trying to disown responsibility for their wrong predictions in advance. So yeah, its clear I don't believe in it, but I'm just trying to argue a point as to why. And yes, I know the title is misleading. It is meant to be so.

How to prevent hacking, anyone?
MolotovCocktail replied to MolotovCocktail's topic in Computer Science
Thanks for all of your help guys! Now my computer is much safer. Also, I made some of my security passwords between 18-25 digits long. And they only have 2 tries to get it correct before it locks them out for an hour. Lets see a hacker get through that! -
How many of you here are familiar with the twin paradox. For those of you who don't know, the twin paradox basically is when you have one set of twins, put one sibling on a rocket and accelerated to near light speeds. Of course, if you travel at near light speeds, the time relative to the person going that fast is a lot slower than for the sibling still on Earth according to the theory of relativity. This therefore leads to twins that are not the same age when he/she returns from the trip. For example, if you were on a rocket ship going at near light speeds for, say, 10 years, several decades may have passed for the observer on Earth. I am quite fascinated with this phenomenon, and I think Kip Thorne even theorized that this may make some sort of time travel possible if you were to attach a wormhole with one end on the rocket ship.

Oh yeah, I did forget to mention the IQ's of people with Low Functioning Autism, although I did already say that people with HFA generally have average to above-average IQ's. And of course, technically you can still be "high functioning" if your IQ is above 70. And it is still true that people with Asperger's Syndrome do not have language deficits, unlike other forms of Autism. Ah yes, the Simon Baron-Cohen model. Although people with autism do score high on the SQ portion of the test, it does not mean that Autism is the extreme male brain. There is a whole lot more to Autism than just simply whether or not they have a high empathy/systemizing intelligence. This model, however, may help to explain how autistic brains work and why there are much more males with autism than females, as well as possible origins.

Yeah, I find that psychology is misunderstood by the general public as well, and I especially see a lot of misunderstanding of various mental and personality disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive and Schizophrenia. I would have to say that the reason for this misunderstanding is probably because most of their understanding of psychology comes from mass media and popular entertainment, in which the symptoms are greatly exaggerated and psychology is generally linked with the mentally disturbed (which by the way falls under the realm of abnormal psychology). Oh, and Velocity517, if your having trouble finding information on Autism on the web, go to this link: http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/ . This site has a lot of information on Asperger's Syndrome and Autism. About Autistic Savants, their characteristics are linked to damage or developmental impairment to the left side of the brain. In fact, it is well documented that people have obtained savant-like personality and skills through car accidents, in which the left side of the brain is damaged. They also did an experiment in which they applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation to give otherwise normal people savant-like capabilities.
