How can the speed of light be constant when one of its factors - time -( per second) is not ?
-
I think it would. I think that only "now" exists as a colection of sucessive "nows" that you cant go back into, and that the future can only be reached when it becomes "now". If two diffrent "nows' existed there would have to be twice the mass and energy.
-
All that exists is "now". The past has become history and the future has yet to arrive. How, according to relativity, can the space twins "now" fall behind that of earths ?
-
What I mean does the present move into the future at a rate independent of time. Does the universe age uniformly while clocks can run diffrently.
-
Does "now" progress uniformly while time at a diffrent rate ?

How could time slow for a space traveler, relative to that on earth, and yet he returns to earth in its present.
-
According to special relativity it would appear that a space twin’s time and ageing could pass slower than his earth brother while they both shared the same present (now). How could this be?
-
How can one man be living in the year 2000 and another in the year 3000 and yet share the same "PRESENT"? How can one man be living in the year 2000 and another in the year 3000 and yet share the same "PRESENT"?
-
The space twins "now" would be in the year 2000 while the earth twins "now" would be in the year 3000. What do they do when they meet ? Agree what year they should be in ? If they are in the year 3000 the space would have to have a time jump to get there.
-
If the twins end up at the same point why are they not the same age?

I cannot understand how a space travelers present – now – can fall behind that of earths so that he ages slower than his twin on earth, and earth itself with, his watch running slower than a similar watch on earth, yet come back to earth, jump somehow and where, into the earths present with his watch speeding up? It seems to me in my ignorance that the present¬-(now)-would be the same throughout the universe evolving into the future at the same pace i.e. the universe would age uniformly. If time would appear to flow slower for any body or particle this would be due to a slowing of the measuring instrument but the advancement of the present would stay in step with earths. Thus an atomic clock or particles decay could be slowed by there speed while their march toward the future would not. I also cannot understand how the speed of light could be constant if time, an element thereof were not ? (Miles per minute).

The man walking in the longer direction is in the year 3000. The man waking in the shorter direction is in the year 2008 . At what point does he jump to the year 3000.

If the earth twin moves ahead intime where does it leave the space twin other than in his past? If they get together at the earths time the space twin must have jumped a time gap.At what point and where does this occur.
-
What happens to the space twins clock and calender ? Do they just jump ahead? What happens to acts of the space twin that can effect the earth twins present are they just rewritten in his history?
-
If the space Twins' time passes slower than that of his earth brother his clock and calendar would be behind the earth's, he would thus be in the earth's past.He would not arrive at earth before he started only at an earlier date than his brothers had then reached. How could the two get together
-
How could time pass slower for the space twin without his falling in his brothers past ?
-
The space traverlers want to meet and shake hands, what is tnre date when they do this? The space traverlers want to meet and shake hands, what is tne date when they do this?

The trouble I see with relativity is that it does not adress the questions of past present and future. The actual slowing of time would place the body for which the time went slower in the past of the body for which time did not slow. This would open a can of worms as to what actualy exsist in the past and future.
-
My question relates to relativity as relativty predicts a slowing of time which could bodies in each others past and future.
-
Time as measured by insturments may appear to change, but time reflecting the rate of passage of the past to the present to the future could remain constant allowing the universe to age uniformly
-
I have been told that according to the theory of relativity if a man leaves Earth in a spaceship, and travels at a speed approaching I the speed of light his time passes slower than time on earth. If this is so, when the man returns to earth his calendar date and his time would be behind earths; he would be in earths past, and earth would be in his future. How could this be?

What I am trying to understand, what if anything, exits on either side of now.
-
1&2- I take it from your answer that you would agree that only the present " now" exsits. 3-How does relativity deal with the concept of past present and future
-
Questions concerning Relativity 1- As the present moves on becoming the past does anything remain of it other than memory. 2- Is the future anything other than anticipations? 3- A space traveler, moving relative to earth at speed approaching the speed of light, would have his time pass slower than that on earth. Would not that put the space traveler in the earth past, and the earth in his future? How could they ever meet? Would not the traveler return to earth in its past? 4- The theory of relativity is premised on the speed of light being a constant. A factor in the speed of light is time – miles per second-. If the duration of a second is slower for the space traveler how can the speed of light be constant?
