I did low-level formatting on my HD.... The other guys just didnot mention the idea of file recovery program when I mentioned that my Xp got corrupted in another thread, otherwise I could not have done formatting my whole HD, which has my academic reports and essays since 2 years.....>_< any way, I will try... Lastly, why external harddrive would encounter the problem like I mentioned?? is it the problem of the OS itself (xp), or the usage?

ok, so... can you recommand any small linux or unix OS specialized for restoring corrupted files under WinXP??? because since I am not expertise in Unix/Linux, I dont know the most capable one... btw, why on earth Microsoft Windows itself isn't capable of restoring files under its own NTFS format??? My external harddrive's brand is HITATCHI, and I bought it origininally as a normal HD, then I put it in an USB device which can be used as an external drive altogether, does that have any influence at all??? because I have never encountered this sort of problem accessing local HD..... Too bad, is it possible to retreive data from a formatted HD??, because I used to have a partition with my older XP, but it got corrputed, ie, unbootable, so I was too hasty to format (I thought it was the end of my files), I still have that partition, but just been formated, is it possible to get data back??? thanks for responds Albert

Hello all Now I have a very serious problem........ I am now using an external harddrive to save all my files, as some of you might know that long time ago I got a serious OS corruption. As usual, 1 of the directories in the external drive was working properly, but today, when I tried to open it... I got this message in a dialogue box: "Cannot access X:\xxx. File or directory is corrupted and unreadable" Any help???

Hi all, I know this might not make sense, but can any one explain?? we know that plants grow faster and bigger in darker position that in light position, because of etiolation.... but my experiment of investigating phototropism in contradiction of geotropism surprised me.... I have 3 plants on the shelf of a dark chamber, the distances between each 2 plants are 60 and 30 cm away repectively. just beneath the middle plant, I place a torch, which is situated abit outwards rather than light directly on the middle plant.... For days of experiment I saw 1 thing, the plant at the left most, where received the slightest light, barely grow, and the plant at the right most, grow the largest, which grows towards light comming from the torch to the side of the chamber, but not towards the torch.... and the middle, grows in a rate of median, which receives a fraction of light comming from beneath, which the other fraction was blocked by the surface of shelf above. Why does the plant reveicing the least light grow the least??? And my conclusion for when geotropism contradicting phototropism, although plant grows towards light, it will not grow downwards for the most light resource, contradicting geotropism. Is this right?? ps, here, plant means seedling in my case... thanks for any explanation Albert

I think they have no use. They are simply ignored by google as something useless during any research. But I am always wondering about the sign % in computer, because for example, %20 means somehow like "space" and it was also used such as %systemroot%, but I can't find the similarity between those 2... Maybe some one can answer it?? regards

Some folders in my back up external harddisk have the files called "Thumbs.db". Those take up a considerable amount of capacity, but I don't know whether they are important, so any idea??? thx Albert

any way, I managed to install Xp pro to the empty partition. I could access to my other partitions, but the very undesirably, some of my files in the are gone, from the partition which was my xp home. I noticed that the capacity is used up, which, I hypothesized that there was some data loss due to over limit of xp home used before, as I was downloading too many stuff, that likely caused the problem of the failure of xp?? Luckily, as only dir "Documents and Settings" is gone, only my previous school works are gone, although I still feel abit sad about them, because it is such a big collection of research, essays, lab reports, etc, but all my other non-academic files are still remained in the other partition, and some are already in the external drive. thx any way bye

thx NSX and DAK, to Dak, My Windows XP home is traditional Chinese. It is an OEM version for the laptop, and the install disc is only recovery disc, ie, you load the disc and press enter only, and it just formated everything and install Xp home Chinese in. Any way, I would like to rescue my system in the quickest way. During the error message, it says press "r" from the menu loaded from xp Setup disc, but I only have win xp pro setup disc. I observed that disc under dos from bootdisk, and found that in the root directory of that CD, it only has install.exe, which is a win32 program. What is the DOS mode program to the menu where I could press "r" to recover my Xp?? or what is smartDrive?? how can I use it?? because I was also trying to install xp pro to an empty fat32 partition, about 4-5gb. I got info from the internet that, go to i386\winnt from the install CD, to install in DOS mode, but the program suggested to applicate smartDrive, because the installing process would be much faster, and told to check up DOS DOC for more info about smartDrive. Since I did not know what is that, I just hitted enter installing without smartDrive. It took extremely long time, with the caption showing "please wait while Setup is copying files to your harddisk" with a blue background. I went to bed, and the next day, the screen apeared the caption, somewhat like "Setup fails to copy file xxx.inf", and it says if I ignore copy that file, I might encounter error while install..... so how can I install win xp pro via smartDrive?? please help thx Albert

thx dak, safemode does not work on XP, I have tried hit the ctrl key and kept pressing it as soon as the startup apeared, but that worked nothng. Now I could try hit F8 as you have said.... thx again! Albert

ok, start from beginning before I got this problem, my computer was consistently working alot, that is, my CPU is like running ABOUT all the time, because I was downloading stuff, this lasts for about nearly 2 weeks..... meanwhile I was constantly close and reopen the computer.... by the way, it is a laptop by the past three days, things go abit wrong, the laptop was ok at night, but by the next day in the morning, I saw the screen black with white words saying "System boot failure", I restarted the computer and let it do the disk scanning and it is all fine.... same thing happened yesterday, but it went fine as well later. but today, when I was letting my laptop doing alot of work, like moving all the files I have from the laptop to the external harddrive, while downloading, and I was playing game at the same time.... but it crashed, and i restart the computer, the problem arose. I have tried to delete c_950.nls from windows/system32, because it says the file is corrupted or missing, and I copy another c_950.nls from my windows me computer, which I think is the same, because it has same size as well, by means of using dos boot disk, but the net result becomes, that my computer screen appears completely black every time I switch on my computer... AHHH can any one really just upload a new c_950.nls from your xp home under windows/system32, because that is the only solution I can think of, copying that file from a healthy windows xp home instead of win me. please help// thx

By the way, any one know any Dos boot disk that can access NTFS disk??? Urgently need help.... thx

If you are currently using Xp Home, may you go to windows\system32\ and see is there a file called: C_950.nls?? can you guys upload the file uphere, because i currently needed to boot my windows Xp Home, because my Xp now has a failure to start up, because the message says the file C_950.nls is missing..... I had experience of installing FreeBSD and Linspire on my other x86 laptop, and although they can be installed, but some hardwares were not supported, especially annoying when it was my PCMCIA wireless LAN card..... Since I would like to have a distro of unix system for my iBook, because I can directly learn from it because I have the book, but I cant find any unix system on distrowatch which support the best iBook (ppc G4 1.33 with Airport, 15' screen), with ALL its standard hardware...... so any help?? thx

I just want to learn the skill hacker aquires. And understanding the system completely itself is definately one of them, because hackers should know how does the computer work by looking the source code, and more over, to learn how does Internet work in relationship with the OS.... and those opensource OS available is either linux or unix.... and mac is only parital Albert

Who knows, a hacker does access illegally to servers, but as long as they do that for 1) practice of their skills 2) getting information 3) leave secretly without making any ruffle and delete the entry log, just looks nothing like anything never happened, who is going to know a server has been hacked?? You better buy a book about that..... a simple and straightforward is just neccessary, should explain what is each piece of hardware, its relative info, and how it works on behalf of the whole computer assembled. Go to the bookstore and find one yourself, in reality, assemblying a PC isn't hard. ;-) Regards,

nohh that's cracker. Hackers love freedom, but that doesn't mean they hack into a bank and steal money from them... I bet you never been to FreshMeat.Net there are lots of Open Source Projects, and who do you think keep them thriving?? Hackers!! As I said hackers are computer masters, their aim is simply to make things free, like software or even knowledge....try to make things on web free... I even think that the wikipedia's developers are hackers as well.... The best thing about Open Source software is that I can learn a heck of knowledge from its code, instead of pressing Next, Next, and Finish. Any way, that's just my idealogy, but the first thing of all is to get an OS right! Albert

I recently put up a thread asking things about the suitable OS for people to learn the skills hackers aquire..... I don't mean crackers or anything like that.... I think the one who deleted my thread is merely ignorant..... What on Earth do you guys consider discuss something about hackers inappropriate??? Hackers are just computer masters, they obtain the big idea of computer science, and are very intelligent people, since computer sience apply to many things.....and relate to many things.... Isn't Linus Torvalds a hacker as well?? so as Eric Raymond?? I just want to learn computer very well, as hackers or computer masters, but I just want to ask what Unix/ Linux OS there is available for mac and any doc to start out for ppc??? since they are open-source, unlike Mac OS X, which is partially open source..... Seriously, some people here are really evil!
