  1. Below is a table of the comparison of windows, linux and unix........... http://people.freebsd.org/~murray/bsd_flier.html I just still dont get why people still think that Linux has a better performance....... In my situation, Unix would be better than Mandrake Linux, because it supports all my devices...............and it works just fine on installation.... For mandrake, when I use its CD to install, it has an error on the sector of CD........ and for the drivers, it cant detect my wireless lan card...... Albert
  2. Well, I think originality shall be better than clone ;-) To Dave, well,I know it is no point not to x window, but when I am learning Unix, I would not want to start from x window................ More over, I donnot mean that Linux is bad, it is at least easier than Unix (I think), but somehow it works slower than Unix, and the Linux I got is not compatible with my CD-Rom on my laptop (but it works on my Desktop).........So, I dont want to bother to download others again,............ Albert
  3. And I dont think Basic is so useful for the purpose of programming,...... I only use it for macros, and windows vb scripts, or viruses , Basic is more scripting to me rather than programming... Albert
  4. blackbraniac, I assume that your browser is IE, reinstall it, or choose FireFox a little nice browser to use.... For the programming language, if you only want to make programs that work on Windows, choose Basic, which is a very easy programming language to start with....... If you want to makeanything that you can just imagine, even OS, then choose C language.......which is more technical, and difficult to learn too.... Similar to C, Java would be much easier to use for normal purposes.... C language is the most technical Java is the most sufficient, because it is easy, OOP, cross-plaform etc... Basic is the easiest. Albert
  5. Well, first of all, I think I hate those Linux distributors who make Linux with GUI and make it tends to be so easy, like windows......... I think this is just personal reason that I want to start FreeBSD, because as I have heard, since Linux is so free, some programs that were designed on certain distro of linux may not work on others, no one maintains a level of compability........ Most of all, I know Dos is dead, completely..... What I am saying is just an idea that if DOS is the underlying kernel, and Windows is somehow the X window, then I would probably start learning the commands......... because for Unix/Linux, it is very important to know its commands without x window, same as Dos, you have to know how to use the commands and their config... FreeBSD would be probably better to use while learning the fundamental computer knowledge, and there is also plenty of free educational softwares for science, maths, etc.......that makes it so better than XP......well, except for playing games.... Albert
  6. To my experience (I am a java programmer), first, you have to take the lessons about computer basics, things like OS, hardware and software, input and output..... Those can be practiced about 3 months individually, very easily... then you choose a programming language, depending on your wish..... And I think for programming, I really recommend you to go for regular lessons in an educational organisation, like Sun Microsystem registered ones, that you can learn with qualified instructor, and more over, you can get qualification if you pass the exams...... It takes about 1 month to learn the whole package of Java, well if you are really hardworking. To me, I take it separately in a half year, so I get practicing regularly after each section off package is finished..... Check out on your local computer educational organisation for more info... Albert
  7. well, I have tried Mandrake, and I see that it is not very well on installing, maybe because of the hardware compability...... Any way, I dont think It is not good to start out FreeBSD, because to me, it is just like Dos commands... It is somehow that easy Linux looks more windows and FreeBSD looks more Dos, and I rather choose FreeBSD,which is more fundamental to learn
  8. Ok, in my own words, to make sure I understand those terms...... a package contains the programs and tell the computer how to install it....is it like the InstallationShield on Windows? which you click it and it runs? A port is like Java binary codes in principle right? Albert
  9. well, dave, I assume Quark wants to share his videos and songs on his website, but on the other hand, he does not want people to "save as" them....... thats why it makes things so complicated, bothering to use java applet.... if it is simple as a webdisk, then dont make a page that links to it
  10. Ok, so dave, what you mean is that you install the softwares by compiling them with the major libraries? Any way, again, in FreeBSD/Unix terms, what is port? and what is package? Albert
  11. QuarkQuarkQuark2001, as long as I read your first message, to me, and to other experienced internet users, can "save as" your files easily as long as all of your files are shown in your web page, people just have to check the source code/html, or go to temporary files to check the link........ are you creating your own web disk rather than a website? One way to defend your files being known the link is not to make a page that links to it,... Second way is to learn Java applet, which is better secure than such as asp, php, etc.....it makes harder for the hackers to find out the link, because the applet is binary java code, not only simple text like HTML. hope it helps Albert
  12. I am currently now studying FreeBSD, I am confused about the terms being used in Unix softwares, what is port? and what is package? secondly, when I download the softwares,do I get only the source codes? because I wonder will the program work in other platform with also FreeBSD... Apreciating for furthur responds Albert
  13. I have tried both FreeBSD and Mandrake on my laptop............. I feel that Mandrake very easy to install and use, but while, it is less compatible with my laptop hardwares as I must say, individually, although it is easy, it seems buggy and slow . The disadvantage for FreeBSD, to me, is it is hard to use, but I think it is the most flexible OS I have ever used, I think I would slowly derive from Xp to FreeBSD... Albert
  14. Ok, the problem of over large file is solved, finally..... I use a program call WinISO and I transform the bin file into ISO file, guess what, the file becomes smaller than 700mb and the contents of both are still the same, dont know the reason why.... Any way, here comes my another installing problem....What I am trying to install is Linux Mandrake 10.0 official, and I was trying to install from harddisk, and when I point to the Mandrake iso file, it says it cannot find the directory of Mandrake/base/ in that iso, but when I ckecked the iso file, it does have the directory Mandrake/base/.... Any experience Mandrake user can help? Albert
  15. Ok, dave, in another saying...... Some says that Mac Os is Darwin, which is 40% of the whole OS and is open source kernel..... then what are the other 60% of Mac OS? Albert
  16. Well, overburn? You mean burn a larger file into a smaller capacity of CDs? then why not overburn on a 700mb CD? Albert
  17. admiral, I know how to burn a CD and anything technical for it in general..... and, the file I download is not iso image, but a cue file, which is an instruction like file to tell Nero to burn the bin image....... I know how to do it, just dont know what happen if image file is bigger than the CD(700mb) capacity... Any furthur help? Apreciate in advance.. Albert
  18. dave, that link seems a bit older, because it does not show pentium 4 and G5... Any way, doesn't matter What I want to ask is, I have just downloaded a version of Linux, it has 5 CDs, and each one is more than 700 mb, about 791 mb..........and the file type is bin, and I suppose to burn it using cue file given.... Then question is: would the file be compressed when it is burning? Will be apreciated for furthur responds Albert
  19. So, dave, If FreeBSD(Darwin) is Mac's kernel....... then what do the rest of Mac OS call? Albert
  20. By the way, Alpha CPUs vs PowerPC, which one is faster? Albert
  21. Since BSD is open source, why there is only FreeBSD which is a free distribution? unlike Linux? I have also heard that Linux is more free than Unix....What does that mean? Secondly, Is Mac also Open source? Albert
  22. But,,, since Unix goes in 2 ways, AT&T and BSD, and BSD is open source and done by Berkeley Univesity...... Why Linus did not take the whole kernel from BSD? Is it the reason that he could not take it, or he is not allowed to? Secondly, If he cant take the whole kernel, how come he knows the "ideas" of the kernel? Albert
  23. Admiral, I just want to know what are alpha's, so I can make sure my choice of release of Linux is right...(I choese i386)... Any way, as I wondered, since Linux/Unix claims about its mobility, why there is no Linux/FreeBSD for Macintosh? As far as I see... Albert
  24. So, the difference between Linux and Unix is that Linus borrowed a few ideas from Unix kernel to make Linux..... but why he does not clone the whole kernel, which would be better now, wouldn't it? Albert
  25. then what is its OS? Albert
