rofl they can't even spell absolutely right..

I think there are two major flaws in the system: 1. Teachers working in state owned schools get paid not by their skill but rather by how long they've been teaching. Usually one would expect that longer teaching would imply longer skill. However, the general trend at my school at least is that the longer someone teaches the less they are about teaching since they still get pay raises. It doesn't matter if his class has only one A student and rest C's and D's, because the school board can't kick off as the teacher's union would start bitching. This is also why teachers at private schools actually work hard to communicate and teach CONCEPTS not FACTS to students. 2. This relates to my last point, the problem is that teacher's are not sparking the student's interests in the subject itself. Why? Because it is alot easier to teach a bunch of facts rather than some ambiguous concept that would take days to teach. (personally I know that any concept worth learning takes at least a week to somewhat understand.) The labs that my Biology teachers designates for us I find a bit worthless and elementary, 2 days ago he had us blow into water so demonstrate CO2 and O2 levels. However, he really didn't explain why is it that we're doing it. my 2 cents...

Where does intelligence come from? It is a byproduct of evolution itself, it was the intelligence that allowed our ancestors to create tools which benefited our survival. However, even back then they didn't really breed to their max capacity.

I've been so far gotten pissed off at every single teacher at my high school. Why? Because they mostly almost always follow a textbook approach towards teaching. This usually involves dishing out tons of overhead notes, homework and more importantly they are teaching facts, not ideas. For example, my Biology teacher was voted one of the best teachers in the state, yet I have an insane animosity towards him. For one, I can never ever have an intellectual debate with him, for example when I asked him about the possible divergence of telomerase into reverse transcriptase, he simply just gave me the cold shoulder and said "OK. Hm... can't say i know much about that... let me look it up" Then he never gives me a reply. Right now most of the stuff we learn in high school I already know from reading college level biochem and genetics books at home, yet he still requires me to sit in class and re-learn random facts about random parts of the human body that I really really could care and benefit less. My Biology teacher from last year was common known as a pedophile who molested girls and didn't teach anything to his class. Yet last year felt more productive than this year since he pretty much let me read and do whatever I want. thoughts, comments?

i said SOLEY for reproductive purposes, if quality of life didn't matter why don't we all have nine kids with crappy impoverished life that breed when they are 15 since it surely is possible. Our DNA would still be propagated wouldn't it?

I'll explain to you how the UN tries to be Communist, (I have lived in China for 9 years of my life so I think I have som credibility.) 1. The UN is designed so that every country has an equal voice in its policies, despite the large difference between the military and economic power. Each country is supposed to contribute to the global effort in some way. However, clearly this is not so. Communism is similar because it treats everyone similarly despite the fact that some people are more able than others. Communism also expects that everyone contribute their own part to the state itself. 2. It fails to act Communist because there are six primary nations that have the power to veto any bill that comes along. Even though for example France contributes almost nothing towards the global effort other than to veto any policy that the US makes. 3. I said that it tries to be communist, not that it is communist. If anything the UN is a bit capitalist. 4. As a reponse to urza, do I know everything associated with communism? No, but do you? From what I know, Communism was a theory originated from th Communist Manifesto written by Karl Marx. Its basic dogmatic philosophy was that everyone should contribute to the state. Similar to how the UN should function, every country pulling its own weight in helping the global situation. Karl Marx once quoted "workers of the world unite", which is very similar to UN's belief that countries of the world unite.

Haha this is a pretty dorky forum alright (not that its bad, if not good)

the UN tries to act communist but totally fails, personally i don't think the UN should exist anyways. it would be much more convienent to if one country just took over the world. but as for the topic at hand, i don't personally agree with countries contributing MONEY to other countries. It would be much more effective if instead foot, shelter, and clothing were sent instead of money that can easily fall into the wrong hands.

Light headed after running
rakuenso replied to rakuenso's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
1. I don't smoke/drugs/alcohol (anything bad) 2. I find my self out of breath after the 7th and 8th 200 meters, so I'm not sure if its over-oxygenation 3. My urine is yellow last time i checked, but I drink about 5 bottles of (240ml) water a day... not to mention the juice nor the milk. Another question, does anyone know a good way to breath while running? Like inhaling 3 steps, exhaling 2 steps or etc for both distance, medium and short runs? -
one gene one protein dogma no longer true

Its in the magazine, maybe i'll scan it tomorrow at school -
if our wombs can't support it, then why haven't we evolved wombs that CAN support it? surely we can't be evolving soley for reproductive purposes, more or less the reason we don't reproduce as much is that it will reduce our quality of life.

today was a hectic day of track, we did 8 200m runs, after the 6th one my head started hurting, and after the 8th one i almost vomitted, any idea why this happens or how to prevent it?

It was recently published in March edition's Scientific American. It seems that one gene can infact code for many many proteins, (sometimes up to 6+), this is mainly due to a different perspective on gene expression. Where introns are infact quite important after all, even though they are not "expressed" they play a crucial role in gene expression and protein synthesis. But what are the factors that tell genes to code one protein and not the other? I'm guessing environmental and the body's regulatory mechanisms as of right now. (anyways, i'm a bio-chem newb , if anyone can add/explain more to it it'd be great)

just because its beneficial doesn't mean it will happen.... i'm sure it would have been beneficial if our ancestors had rocket launchers growing out of their arms or to be able to photosynthesize, but that hasn't happened yet has it?
-
However, in your example, how direct is the correlation between bad eye-sights and genes? To what extent is it also effected by environmental factors?

disease imho is just another force of natural selection, which promotes a healthy gene pool
