  1. The natural number e was I believe first discovered in studying the limit as x tends to infinity of (1 + 1/n)^n and it can be shown that e^x is equal to the limit as x tends to infinity of (1 + x/n)^n. The natural log is the logarithm to the base e. It is possible to express any decay formula in terms of any base but e is used for the property that e^x is equal to it's derivative and integral, this naturally makes differentiation and integration involving exponential functions a lot easier.
  2. Hmm, mathworld seems to define the tau slightly differently to the one I know. Though I think the original conjecture is true only for my definition of tau, something that mathworld calls sigma. Either i'm missing something really basic, but it seems like a hard proof. I'll have a look through my algebra books.
  3. The tau I know of is the one such that tau(n) = the number of positive divisors of n.
  4. You misunderstood me. When you crack your knuckle you are causing a change in pressure and some gas "boils" out of sinovial fluid. It takes about 15 minutes to dissolve again, that is why you cannot crack them for a while after you do it. You would have to crack your knucles every 15 minutes constantly non stop without sleeping for 30 years to cause any damage.
  5. Gas Centrifuge is one way. The uranium is heated up until it is a gas and then spun around to seperate the isotopes.
  6. I am of course reffering to the planck length, it is meaningless to talk about something that is smaller than a planck length, so to all effects and purposes space is quantized.
  7. That's the best way to describe it. Orbiting only means something in the context of the two bodies doing something to each other.
  8. But it is not true to say two objects orbit a common centre of mass if you are exerting forces upon them that do not correspond to an inverse square law.
  9. Actually it is a myth that cracking knuckles causes damage. The biomedical engineering department at my university says that you would have to do it constanstly for 30 years to cause a problem.
  10. I believe we have used that assumption all the way through this discussion. Anyway it simply requires the main force between the two objects to follow an inverse square law.
  11. Technically all particles travel at the speed of light through spacetime. Ahem, er, time doesn't have a speed, that would be meaningless, what units would you measure it in.
  12. Massless particles can (rather, MUST) travel at the speed of light. Particles with mass, i.e. us, cannot. Tachyons, proposed particles that travel faster than the speed of light would be able to travel faster than light, and also backwards in time. But they have never been observed experimentally, so they aren't of much use to us.
  13. The theory that people who suffer from [insert mental problem] is a result of being taught to use the wrong hand to write with has been discredited. The terrors are probally a result of something else. And your doctor is using out of date physcology. I learnt all this a few days ago from a book about symmetry in nature. Very interesting subject.
  14. Objects do not orbit other objects. They orbit the centre of mass of the system.
  15. It has been long accepted amongst scientists that space and time are quantised. There is no infinity paradox.
