I think when you leave it in the bottle, the shell dries hard again. Maybe I'm confusing a magic trick with a science experiment.
-
All of these require the eggshell be pre-softened by the vinegar, iirc how the experiment goes. But without the vinegar, each would be a spectacular way to break the egg. I was just going to smack the bottle. If either breaks, the egg is out.
-
No magic needed for that.

It IS a great thing, because if you went back and edited it now, the reponses wouldn't be accurate. Post your corrections in context now, and all will make sense, right? Reaching high is different than having unrealistic expectations. Why aim for something that "probably won't happen" when you can reasonably expect to achieve a great deal of success without being so extreme about it? Don't set up an all-or-nothing scenario when you have a good idea, but rather try to get the best support you can. That said, I don't agree with the premise. I'm a Humanist, and I still don't believe that humans should be considered "first and foremost above everything else". I would also disagree that the "well-being of the planet" is important. The well-being of the environments we share with all life is where we should focus our efforts in practical solutions.

... unaware of how lucky they were that, in the OP, a magic wand created the black hole instead of a supernova.

! Moderator Note This is a science discussion site. This is not your blog. Don't do this any more.

The concept seems to be too focused on generalities and maximums. Solving EVERY problem, 100% effectiveness, and the assumption that capitalists will be more concerned with their customer base than they are with profits. There are also several errors that need to be corrected (more solar, but we need to give up electricity?!). Perhaps the OP would like to amend the proposition, or admit it might be a touch overreaching?

Excuse me? I would say to them. It's all belief, but my scientific theory is testable, which makes it more trustworthy. That means if you don't trust it, you can actually study it to see what it says. You can test it to obtain the same results, you can discuss it with your peers to make sure you aren't being deceived, you can basically make sure it's worth any confidence you can place in it. Let's see you do that, I would say to them, with your faith.
-
I don't think this is true at all. This implies your knowledge is either 100% or 0%. Don't you think it's much more variable? I tend to look at all belief on a scale of trustworthiness. I believe in a testable scientific theory with a great deal more confidence (to use StringJunky's word) than I do something that has little evidence to support it. I can't trust faith-based explanations since they have nothing to support them other than people's willingness to believe them.

Are you kidding?! You open a thread saying you find it curious there are no practical applications, and then you reject the next 4 pages of examples of practical applications. You're being extremely intellectually dishonest in this. Why did you post this thread here if you didn't really want any examples to spoil what you suspect? Have you perhaps latched onto this idea emotionally, and are therefore finding it difficult to see reason wrt the subject? You wouldn't be the first.

Exactly. Why are so many misinformed? Revolution isn't something you choose conservative measures for. If early American colonists had acted like today's conservatives, we'd be part of the UK.
-
Your opinion sucks, quite frankly. Conservatism is absolutely necessary just the way every other tool in our box of democracy is absolutely necessary. What are you, a hammer-only carpenter? I really hate it when People self-inflict limitations, since they vote to do it to us all.

evolution theory
Phi for All replied to Aditi Bhattacharya's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Only in special circumstances. Humans are wonderful runners, with lots of stamina and speed, but when you add more muscle for strength, it slows us down. The extra benefit of more strength could make us more vulnerable in situations where running away is a better choice. Every species has to deal with a vast variety of situations, and as others have mentioned, added strength comes at a cost. If a bird gains more muscles, it might make them too heavy to fly, rather than make them faster fliers. -
Pet theory hijack (from Quantum Entanglement)
Phi for All replied to Rob McEachern's topic in Trash Can
! Moderator Note You need to STOP HIJACKING threads with this pet theory of yours. We've been too lenient up to this point, but you'll be getting warnings leading up to suspension and banishment now. You haven't made your case here for this idea, so stop using it to make unqualified arguments. You've been warned many times about this. -
! Moderator Note OK, two pages is enough of this. NumberlineA, especially when the second response poses a major problem you haven't addressed. You haven't been able to explain or support your idea. You aren't considering the several corrections to your science knowledge that have been offered. And please, please note that when someone says they don't understand one of your explanations, pointing them back to the same explanation and claiming you explained it already is NOT helpful in the least. Don't open another thread about this subject until you have the evidence to support and clarify your concepts. This hand-waving, mathless, assertive style isn't as good as asking questions about things you don't know. Please re-read the responses and do some more research. Thread closed.

Stop acting like pre-WWII Germany? Don't start treating what Trump's says like it's 25/25/25/25, or anything more than a big lie told enough times that people start to believe it? Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it. -- Adolph Hitler I see you've learned a great deal about belittling the opinions of others in order to make your points. Trump is a master at calling people Chicken Little.
-
And I'm not talking about looking for more, I'm talking about NOT being numb to any of them, to demand better from the POTUS and the rest of our leadership. I feel many people are now treating his lies as par for the course, and THAT is what I think is dangerous. Trump has created an atmosphere where normally intelligent people are content to point out his lies while justifying them with their support of what he does that they like. He gets away with murder because conservatives don't like the people he's killing anyway, and I think there's a LOT of historical references to the dangers of this. How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think. -- Adolph Hitler
-
So when Trump makes up stuff when he's cornered, like he did about trade when talking with Justin Trudeau, do you think he was answering a question wrong, or do you think making stuff up you know isn't true might qualify as lying? So well defined, in fact, that it has desensitized a great deal of people wrt how bad lying daily is for a POTUS. The bigger picture is that considering his lack of integrity to be "small stuff" is going to actually be what enables him to become the despicable fascist the OP insinuates.
-
Regardless of the situation, really? The jocks you talked about didn't listen in class, actively disrupted it, then said "stupid stuff about the subject later". They didn't learn about it, then made up stuff to bash it, which you acknowledged was willfully ignorant, but somehow the stuff they made up willfully wasn't lies? I see now we probably will never agree about matters of integrity, especially wrt Trump. I'm very sorry you see Trump's willful ignorance as "small stuff". To me, it defines him and what he's doing to our country. I don't understand how you think holding his actions up to the light enables him.
-
I think it's blowback from an active effort by a lot of corrupt, older alpha male types to glamorize ruthless, extremely aggressive behavior in their business and personal lives. Liars can be forgiven, seemingly, as long as they make a lot of money while they lie (bankers really good at corruption almost never go to jail). They happily embrace fascism if it gives them an edge to exploit. They object to Trump until they see the gaps he's widening in the sheep's defenses that will allow these wolves more access, and now they also want to hail the only man who can possibly fix things.

So are quantum entangled or teleported particles instantly there
Phi for All replied to Menan's topic in Relativity
This is always going to be a stumbling block for you if you really want to learn science. Just because we don't know everything it doesn't mean we don't know anything. Science is constantly updating itself, that's why we work with theory rather than try to find "answers". Theory is built upon slowly and methodically until it's the most trusted explanation we have for a specific phenomenon. -
I figured you would, since you said you don't blame the jocks for lying. I don't understand why you would defend the liars, but it sounds like you don't mind people saying disturbing, stupid stuff, and don't really consider it lying. Or maybe you do, I got mixed messages about this from you.
-
As long as you're not apologizing for them by saying they thought what they were saying was true.
-
Personally, I don't consider anything honest about a person's thinking who actively doesn't learn, who purposely doesn't read, who openly doesn't listen to experts, and has vehemently justified it all so he can make any decision he feels like. The 25-50% you ascribe to honestly-thought-was-true was willfully and ignorantly derived. He is not an intellectually honest man in the first place, and I think you're forgetting that.
