  1. This is the kind of diligence that gets a thread bumped up from Speculations to Astronomy. Solid, unassailable. Nice.
  2. I agree with swansont here. Going against the advice of experts is not the same as ignoring their advice. There may be other factors that overrode the scientific consensus. But ultimately what you want to watch out for is when the science is manipulated to appear as something it was never meant to be. Politicians + scientific evidence + spin doctors = DANGER, WILL ROBINSON, DANGER!!!
  3. Any helpful input is appreciated. All the previously deleted posts from this thread have been moved to their own thread right here. They had too much speculative science to be deemed appropriate answers to mamibrkly's original question.
  4. Your posts have been restored and split from the original thread. Please continue.
  5. Due to speculations which take this thread outside accepted science, it has been moved from Astronomy to Speculations. No Galileo-like persecution is intended and your understanding is greatly appreciated.
  6. "Damn. If he had added 'rue the day' I would have had crackpot bingo." --swansont It does help save three or four pages of circular logic when someone claims right off the bat to be Galileo, though.
  7. This is well put and I agree. And don't forget that unicorns sometimes were supposed to appear to virginal human females, whereas after a certain point, God stopped appearing to living humans and told everyone that faith was the new burning bush. I don't know of any mythical creatures that are THAT much outside the observable, rational world.
  8. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that everyone is probably reading and analyzing the Vernon Jenkins data you aimed us at, in between work and school. I, for one, find it less effective to read and post simultaneously. And most of the "mob" was due to circular logic and the repetition it tends to spawn. Now that you've thrown us a bone, please allow time for us to chew.
  9. So if I'm swinging a cat around by the tail, the force I feel at the end of my arm is centripetal, but the force the cat feels is centrifugal?
  10. An unidentified newbie posted this OP and three out of four of his replies were from Graviphoton, Farsight and Zephir. I bolded the part where he went horribly, horribly wrong.
  11. Interesting site. My bible is quite different when I compare Exodus I, 1-3, though. Mine says, "Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin," Yours says, "These are the names of Israel's sons who came to Egypt with Jsupersensible teleswitching coherency umbral! 12. New Century version: In the beginning God created the sky and the earth. Young's Literal Translation: In the beginning of God's preparing the heavens and the earth- New Life Version: In the beginning God made from nothing the heavens and the earth. Always, always, always avoid generalities.
  13. GM pioneered work on a large format NiMH battery that would allow an electric car to be run for over a hundred miles on an 8-hour battery charge, with no gasoline involved at all. But after California caved in on it's zero-emissions statute, GM sold the patent... to Chevron, who now only allows the technology to be used on hybrid vehicles.
  14. If you know where the work by Vernon is, just copy and paste the URL as a citation. YDOAPS doesn't expect you to type it all from scratch. Once you've cited the whole text using the URL, you can post snippets that support your arguments. It works well this way.
  15. The next person using an ad hominem like "dense", "delusional", or "ignorant", or a Flaming challenge like, "Use your nuggin [sic], boy" is going to get a nice 10-point infraction towards a temporary ban. It's just not necessary if your arguments are sound.
  16. No. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3441643.stm
  17. Wrong, they all have different contextual meanings. Begging the Question, fallacious. You don't have that electronically handy so you can cut and paste in a second or two? Hmmmm. Intention was not ecoli's point. That similar "codes" can be found where none should be casts a bad light on your statisticatability. ()
  18. SFN starts you with 10 points, but the system probably allows you to start with negative points and work your way up from there. It may also be capable of negative rep but Cap'n disabled that. I tried to read the manual but my spectacular aura kept blinding me....
  19. Chevron should allow their patented large-format NiMH battery technology to be used to make full electric motors instead of only gas/electric hybrids. And if they don't, I feel they should all be shot. Right after we shoot the execs at General Motors for selling it to them.
  20. Btw, I got that, Leap Boy. Oh man, you guys are in great hands. And how spooky is it that swansont posted his Sagittarius at the exact moment I posted hoping he would? It's like he's a physicist psychotic psychiatrist sidekick mind reader or something!
  21. Tools and education for African farmers sounds extremely viable, as long as we can make sure they end up in the farmers hands, and not sold to buy food. It sounds like a bottom-up solution to the problem, like providing more efficient appliances to third world countries instead of pushing big hydro-electric dams on them.
  22. I'm sure I'll get to it someday. Or maybe swansont or some other wit will take over for me while I'm lying on the beach tomorrow (wink-wink, nudge-nudge, say no more).
