UK Parliament mulls protecting consumers against supernatural claims
Phi for All replied to bascule's topic in Politics
The gullible selling to the vulnerable? I like the image. A lot like a rapist picking up a hitchhiking serial killer. Pop the corn and sit back, hilarity will ensue. -
I'll bet they didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition. Nothing has been deleted. Do you remember seeing it actually posted, or did you type it up and then hit "Submit" without checking, the way I always seem to do?

I don't think you have this quite right. Tolerance is what you're looking for, not respect. You can respect a person's right to believe what they want without respecting what they believe. You can be tolerant of their specific belief and deal with them in ways that don't engage their belief system. But you can't ask me to respect someone's beliefs when I don't agree with them. If I believe that Zeus granted me dominion over all human females, are you going to respect my beliefs enough to just let me blindly believe, no matter what it is, and give me your sister?

Which network are they with? I like the sound of this show. I remember reading about a guy who used to comb through old patents to see if they'd cover more modern needs (needs that might not have been around when the patent was taken out). He ended up making a small bundle with an old air compression cylinder which he turned into a spud gun pistol.

I wanted this to end on a more positive note. Imo, passion without reason is wasteful of people and resources. Reason without passion gives direction but no impetus. It's only when we couple reason with passion that we create effective action.

I used to like watching Win Ben Stein's Money. I always liked Ben because he was smart. Now I think he's either not as smart as I once thought or he sold his academic qualifications to a Higher Bidder. When I get over my incredulity, I may see if the library has a free copy they'll lend me. Like CDarwin, I'm not spending money on something like this.

I've always thought NAFTA's detractors were simply businessmen who either wouldn't make as much profit from it or were unable to place themselves appropriately in its path, misinformed citizens passing along fear rhetoric or politicians whose states were concerned about job losses. Now the only objections should be from people who weren't prepared to profit, and you'll never hear anything good about NAFTA from them anyway.

Evolution - is it Challengable?
Phi for All replied to Vexer's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Vexer, since you're just repeating your OP verbatim (which means you either learned nothing or heard nothing you wanted to listen to) and no one is interested in another three pages of you not listening or learning, this thread is closed. -
You're lucky you can change. In May I have to attend both the AIA and the SDA conventions simultaneously! At least they're in the same building. You have to stop trying to jump over it when you win. Maybe tennis isn't your game, Klaynos.

You still have the drive back. Spend the $20, wear a lab coat and your, "Take me to your Higher Authority" button. Then start the video and Prepare to BelieveTM!

If you're not part of the solution....

If you were omniscient, you wouldn't have to ask that. If you were omnipotent then everything would exist for your purposes. And if you were omnipresent, I'm guessing you'd be standing behind me right now, katana ready to swing if I typed anoth

No. It really incessantly comes from the media, who give these whack-jobs so much air time. The media seems to prefer stories on fundamentalists because a) they're controversial, b) they don't require nearly as much thought and fact-checking as real science stories do, and c) they help the ratings. In this light, ID can be seen as a ploy by creationists to use the media to help spread their toxic sound bite message, "Teach the controversy!"
-
If you'll allow me omnipresence (which is kind of granted by omnipotence), I can prove an omniscient and omnipotent God exists. Outside the flow of time there wouldn't be a paradox.

You'll have to ask YT then, since the OP hasn't been here since before Christmas.

In general I'm doing well. Vacation and the beach are a week away so it's tough to concentrate. Too many reports are getting interrupted when I think of something else to pack. I found a great site that sold me prescription swimming goggles for just $24 and they shipped them the next day. Now I won't have to wear contacts while swimming. I'll be testing them at a pool this weekend and I'll let you know how they fare underwater. Does anyone else do the tanning bed thing? I wanted to get a few sessions in so I don't burn so badly on vacation. I could never do it on a regular basis. Something about laying there with those welder's goggles on while I slowly cook reminds me of summer barbeques, and not in a good way. Maybe I should try a different a different company but I had these coupons for Chernobyl Tan....

Irrelevant. These are the same four dentists who recommend Trident chewing gum. If global teeth whitening were caused by these factors we'd see more people chewing while they brush. Trust me, it's not as pretty as it sounds.

I think it's the personal involvement that's the major factor here. When you hear about something and pass it on to someone else, you're an information conduit only. When you've experienced something firsthand and then pass it along, you're an advocate. You invest a passion in your stance that wouldn't be there if you weren't personally involved.

Then please pay attention to this: You are OVERREACTING. No one censored anything of yours, and I only commented when you asked for opinions. I even made it clear I wasn't talking about you, but about those in general who tend to color or supersize their fonts. I mentioned it took a bit of time to get used to and therefore might not be a good idea. You obviously are easily humiliated and for that I am sorry. Do what you need to do but know that your misplaced anger serves you just as well as your urge to make your posts look different. Both are worthless in the pursuit of knowledge.
-
I use fonts (and their attendant options) only for the occasional emphasis. Not pointing any fingers, mind you, but some folks feel the need to gussy up everything they write. I'm not sure if they're not confident in their choice of words and want to embellish or if they think it will make their posts more eye-catching, but I think a lot of readers are more likely to skim over posts that are green or ALLCAPS or use a decorative font that takes a bit to get used to. So in the end, messing with the fonts too much is like reading bedtime stories at the top of your lungs; it defeats your original purpose. [/off-topic urge to comment when I should be working]

Let's be careful here. I know what you're trying to say; God could have designed things the way they are. However, that is NOT what ID is all about. ID is bad science, misinformed science, the kind of science that would say, "Randomness couldn't produce the human eye!" IOW, no science at all. And ID proponents want it taught alongside regular science in public schools. THAT is Intelligent Design. I'm really glad you reasoned it through. And I love stories about people who had enough questions about evolution to study it rather than ridicule it from ignorance. And that's perfectly fine. Evolution says nothing about "creation" so a God who works within the framework of his own physics is not incompatible. But since this God also chooses to remain unobservable and thus supernatural, science has nothing to say about Him. Been there, done that, don't do it anymore.

... and now I know why creationists keep using this argument. You keep giving them permission to use it with statements like this. Sometimes clarification is really just equivocation in an ape suit.

Arrange the first layer of coins in a big rectangular cake pan: Then pour in the gelatin in a thin layer. Let this refrigerate until it sets up, then you can arrange more coins for a 3-D effect. When it's all set up, put a board that's larger than the pan on top of the pan and just flip the whole thing over. Now you can carry your solid block of non-defaced money. Good call, iNow.

Evil isn't some huge entity like a China or an Islam or an ethnic group like Caucasians. Evil is the unabated flow of innumerable depravities perpetrated by narrow-minded people for whom any life but their own holds little meaning. The only rational way to deal with evil is to emphasize the consequences of the individual depravities and their good alternatives. Boycotting the Olympics seems like withholding attention from my dog when he poops on the rug. He won't be certain why I'm not petting him, won't know if I'm angry or busy or indifferent. He won't make the connection unless I rub his nose in the poop.

You speak from experience? Did you learn this in Rio last year?
